Anything from the "Top of the Pops" range of albums from the 1970s. Http://www.udiscovermusic.com/the-curious-case-of-the-top-of-the-pops-albums The dodgy covers also being given added creepiness by what we now know was going on behind the scenes of the programme during that time.
Yes I did realise the innuendo after posting this! 😂
Sorry, I couldn't resist it. Maybe one day I'll grow up!

"One handed practising" ... snigger 😉
-
Just came back from holiday in France (Les Sables d'Olonne) and the town's "house band" (ie they would play at a different cafe, restaurant, street pitch, etc each night) were a band Leonie https://youtu.be/GLEpuyj_f70 that were actually pretty good. It was just a shame that all the bass parts were pre-recorded as they were a three piece with no bass player (guitar/vocals, guitar/vocals and drums). Still pretty good though (and a bonus point for naming a song "Fanny" - I guess it doesn't have the same snigger value in French).

Early days - what should I be aiming for?
A solid bassist with no frills but excellent time-keeping is, imo, more valuable to a band than a flashy one whose sense of rhythm is all over the place.
+1 to this and for the same reason I'd recommend getting a drum machine of some sort - either a cheap hardware based one or a software one; you can program them to be as complex or as simple as you would like but the time keeping is unforgiving and will help you learn to keep time yourself whilst developing your creativity. -
ChangesTwoBowie - Set Evolution
Our next gig is in November and we will be using the time from now to learn another 7-8 songs.
Your could always add some of his collaborations to your set, just to mix things up a bit; how about "Under Pressure" or "Without You I'm Nothing"? -
Payment etiquette - weddings/functions
darkandrew replied to Cosmo Valdemar's topic in General Discussion
When we got married, the venue, catering, flowers, etc all required payment upfront - why should the band be any different? Just a thought - if you're going to do this sort of thing on a more regular basis, it would probably be a good idea to invest in some sort of insurance policy to cover you in the event of you having to cancel (guitarist braking arm, etc) which could leave you open to getting sued for breach of contract. -
Simple Minds - Sparkle in the Rain Blu-Ray Audio
darkandrew replied to darkandrew's topic in General Discussion
Just received my New Gold Dream box set. The standard album has been remastered (again) and is a little warmer than the previous (2002?) remaster, the 12" mixes are OK, the radio session tracks are pretty good and the un-edited versions of the album tracks are quite interesting (although the album edits as originally released are actually better - do you really need a 3 minute fade out on Someone Somewhere in Summertime?). I'm not sure if the HD DVD audio stereo mix has been remixed but there's no credit for it (unlike the new Sparkle mix) - it doesn't sound any better, in fact I'd say it doesn't sound as good as the CD and appears heavily compressed. I haven't listened to the surround mixes yet. One interesting point from the booklet that comes with it, Jim Kerr openly praises Derek Forbes' contribution to the album, pretty much saying that his was the single biggest contribution to the album's overall sound. -
Anyone know Shriekback and how to get this bass tone?

Is that the same Dave Allen that produced the Cure and the Sisters of Mercy? -
I still think somewhere between 17mm and 18mm is about as narrow you're going to get.
-
Thanks man, that's helpful. So, you reckon 17mm minimum spacing, before the screws get too close to the edge of the saddle mount, then?
Yes - don't forget that moving the strings 1mm closer means that you are actually moving the 1st and 4th string saddles by double that (ie. 2mm), similarly a 2mm shift at 2nd and 3rd strings means 4mm shift for the 1st and 4th.
-
I've got mine set at 18mm and could possibly go another 1mm to 17mm. Any narrower than that and the side-to-side adjustable part of the 1st and 4th string saddle would be outside of the main saddle.

Someone I've never seen mentioned on this forum is Phil Spalding, bass player with Toyah in the early 80s then session player with just about everyone else in the late 80s and 90s from Mike Oldfield to Robbie Williams, from Mel C to the GTR supergroup and from Seal to Disney's Lion King soundtrack. http://www.philspalding.com/

Where to get bass valuations for insurance in Kent?
darkandrew replied to darkandrew's topic in General Discussion
I had assumed that they were covered in my home contents insurance but it turns out that any item over £1000 needs either the original receipt or a valuation, and since most of my gear has been bought from here or similar places, I don't have many original receipts and so need to get valuations. It was only when I was reading the "small print" that I noticed this and hve phoned them to confirm it. -
Hi, my insurers want valuations of my basses. Does anyone know of any music shops in Kent that would be able to do this? Ideally somewhere with parking - I don't want to leave "X" thousand pounds of uninsured basses and guitars in a car while I walk the others one by one across town.
AB100 User Manual ...
So the level knobs only adjust the output levels of output A and output B, and not the gain of inputs 1 and 2 - even when in 2 in / 1 out mode?

Who on Basschat has the most expensive bass?
darkandrew replied to Jonny Walker's topic in General Discussion
My Custom Shop SS1 had an RRP of €4500 on the Warwick website, so with the way the pound is falling post-brexit referendum it will soon be worth about £million! -
Being primarily a drummer I can safely say the bottom 60 is pretty laughable. Many I rate highly are among the top 40 but the order is largely arse about tit while there are still too many baffling choices. To put Bonham, Moon, Watts and Starr above jazz greats like Rich and Krupa is taking the piss. I tend to prefer jazz, fusion and funk drummers but there are many non-listed metal/hard rock drummers who could kick the collective arse of most rock players on this list e.g. Simon Phillips, Scott Travis, Brann Dailor, Brian Downey, Mike Portnoy, Vinnie Paul, Charlie Benante and Stephen Perkins,
+1 for Simon Phillips - I was a massive Toyah fan in the 80's and even today The Changeling is one of my favourite albums.
I use http://www.ebay.co.u...S-/182002846998 Lord Sheraton furniture balsam on my Thunderbird every now and then and cleans it very well. Although does not leave a shiny slippery finish so I use Pledge furniture spray, but on to a cloth and not direct onto the wood, on a more regular basis which gives it shiny appearance, slippery neck and removes the cloudy finger marks off the nitro cellulose finish on the body. In fact I use the Lord Sheraton on the back of all my guitar necks as it removes built up grime very effectively.
The trouble with most household furniture polishes is that they contain silicon to give you that "just polished" wet look and the problem with silicon is that you can never paint over it. So it may give you a nice shiny look but should you ever to need repaint or re-lacquer the bass you'd be in trouble.

The Ladder always reminds me of the computer game "Homeworld" which Yes recorded the title song for. And if you're interested, the re-release of The Buggles' "Adventures in Modern Recording" contains early demo versions of most of the "Fly from here" album.
-
I've never really listened to Yes, and therefore no little about Chris Squire. A lot of people obviously rate him, I should probably check him out.
A lot of people, including myself, would recommend Relayer. Personally I also rate Drama although a lot of Yes fans disown that album due to it featuring Trevor Horn on vocals instead of Jon Anderson.

In no particular order, the 5 bassists that have most influenced and inspired me: Bernard Edwards Derek Forbes Simon Gallup (I think that's his first nomination so far) John Taylor Tony Pettit (again, a first time nomination I believe).
