Sorry if I'm being stupid but what does BBoT stand for?
-
And another for Bare knuckle pickups (so that's +3). 3 of my guitars are equipped with BKPs now after previously using Seymour Duncans. Vintage style, I'd recommend Mules and for something a bit heavier I've gone for Rebel Yells and Nail Bombs.

I've seen his name come up on here a few times and always positively. Personally I rate him quite highly and remember seeing him when he was ABC's bass player.
-
It also depends on what you mean by "active". Are you talking active pre-amp and passive pickups or active pre-amp and active pickups? My old SB1000 had a passive pickup and with the preamp bypass engaged became a genuinely passive bass (ie. You could remove the battery and it would still work), on the other hand my Streamer Stage 1 has active pickups and even if the bass's preamp was bypassed you'd still be playing through the pickups' in-built preamps and so it can never truly be passive.

Simple Minds - Sparkle in the Rain Blu-Ray Audio
darkandrew replied to darkandrew's topic in General Discussion
Thanks for the info - I've got the two mentioned above so will give 'em a spin then see if I can track down his Vigier usage! I might be able to tell by listening but I'm not really a fan of live albums so a studio album is preferred.
I'm not sure that they released any live stuff from the Neapolis tour but you'll probably be able to find something on YouTube. -
Pref. where Derek is playing a Vigier.
As far as I know, he used his Fender Precision for all of his first stint (up to, and including Sparkle in the Rain) but I know he used his Vigier while touring the "Neapolis" album during his second stint with the band so may have also used it while recording that album. -
New Gold Dream and Sparkle in the Rain would get my vote.
Another vote for New Gold Dream but I'd also put in a suggestion for Sons and Fascination - it was the album before New Gold Dream and is very bass driven. The CD re-release also includes the mini album Sister Feelings Call which features "A Theme for Great Cities", in my opinion one of Simple Minds' best tracks. -
Is the Steven Wilson remix available as a standard stereo release on CD or vinyl?
I got it on a blu-ray disc (features new 5.1 mix, new stereo mix and original stereo mix) for about £15 but I think you also get the same mixes if you buy the deluxe CD / DVD boxset (retails around £35- £40) but I don't think it's available on it's own on CD. There's also a New Gold Dream box set and blu-ray audio disc with new 5.1 and stereo mixes by Steven Wilson due for release in July although, to be honest, there's not a lot wrong with the original mix of that album. -
It's a 5.1 mix.
It's also got a new stereo mix (and the old one if you haven't got it already) - I haven't listened to the 5.1 mix yet. -
Simple Minds - Sparkle in the Rain Blu-Ray Audio

"Big Dan" is a bit of a hero of mine, I more or less learnt how to play bass by playing along with early Simple Minds records. A great Derek Forbes track to look up is "India" from one of Billie Carrie's (Ultravox) solo albums - featuring one of Derek Forbes' best bass lines. -
I remember reading an interview somewhere with Derek Forbes where he was asked what he thought of Simple Minds' Sparkle in the Rain album and his reply was something along the lines that he wished the bass was higher in the mix so it could actually be heard. Well, off the back of being impressed with Steven Wilson's new mix of Tears For Fears' Songs from the Big Chair album, I recently bought the Blu-Ray audio disc of Simple Minds' Sparkle in the Rain which also features a brand new mix by Steven Wilson and, yes, you can now actually hear Derek Forbes' bass! The drums have been lowered in the mix and the 80's reverb fog dialed back a bit, so that now you can actually hear what's going on in the mix. A great improvement and worth picking up if you are a fan of Simple Minds and Derek Forbes in particular (as I know many of us are).
Is she used to playing a real piano? If so neither of them will give her the feel she's used to. The NP12 is a good little keyboard for the money though, and it's very light too so easy to carry if that's important. It's also got built-in speakers so she wouldn't have to lug an amp to singing lessons. I was looking at one the other week, but in the end I've decided I'll probably go for a second hand older model Kurzweil (something like a PC88) which can be had for the same money if you're lucky & will be miles better sound & playability wise. It will weigh a ton & need an amp though...
Kurzweils are great! I've got a PC361 which I bought years ago and even when new it was significantly less expensive than the competition. Not only do they sound good but they use a very, very powerful synthesis model called VAST which, if you want to get into that sort of thing, will keep you busy for years. Of course, you don't have to get that involved with the programming, you can always use the presets, most of which are very good too.

Steve Jones, guitarist with Sex Pistols, played bass on Never Mind the Bo11ocks. Conversely, John Deacon, bass player with Queen played guitar on Another One Bites The Dust. I think in both cases you can clearly hear the influence of each musician's usual role on their recorded parts.

Gibson Les Paul; Re-profile Neck or Sell and Buy A New One?
darkandrew replied to darkandrew's topic in Guitars
I've had it for about 6 years now, so I've had plenty of time to get used to it. I think that the main problem is that I also have a couple of ESP Eclipses whose necks are a lot thinner, and this stops me becoming accustomed to the thicker necked Les Paul. It's a real shame because it has a really great tone that is very different to the ESPs. -
I have a Gibson Les Paul studio in Faded cherry (ie. Stained dark red with a thin satin cellulose lacquer on top). It's tone is great but I just don't get on with the neck (50s profile). Should I get the neck re-profiled or just sell and get a new one?

String choice for a bass with a graphite neck
darkandrew replied to hiram.k.hackenbacker's topic in General Discussion
Is that the same for most roundwounds or is it Roto's that have that rep? I've not heard that before, but I'm really not well informed in that area.
Rotosound roundwounds are are particularly abrasive apparently. -

darkandrew replied to hiram.k.hackenbacker's topic in General Discussion
I currently use on my other basses which are either Dunlop Super Brights or Rotosound Swing Bass strings.
I too used to use Rotosound Swing Bass strings until I noticed that my frets were being eaten by them - apparently they have a bit of reputation for this. I wouldn't put them anywhere near any of my current basses. -
"100% of net profits go to the charity" So it's net of their profit then? I do wonder how much actually gets to the chosen charity?
I'm more disturbed that they have strings from a band called "The Bacon Brothers", what next, "The Sausage Sisters"? -
I think the blue one looks nicer... http://www.spectorbass.com/legend4neckthru
I already have a Euro 5lx in Ultra Amber but having seen that faded blue Legend ... our dear, I'm having one massive GAS attack. The first Spector I ever saw was in Bahama Blue and I still regret not buying it.
http://www.herculesstands.com/guitars/GS402BB.html I've got one of these - more than adequate and it comes with a little drawstring bag to carry it in when folded up. Certainly much easier to transport than an "A" frame stand. I've never had an issues with mine, definitely sturdy and well built, I'd recommend one.
I've got one of these too, surprisingly strong but watch out for the foam that covers the arms that guitar sits on. After a while the foam becomes compacted and no longer protects the guitar from tubular steel underneath. I now lay a rolled up tea towel over these arms to prevent my guitar being chipped or dented on them.

Ever met a famous musician…. but not realised at the time?
darkandrew replied to Kex's topic in General Discussion
Reminds me of an interview I saw with Gary Numan, apparently a guy called Brian Warner got in touch, wanting to meet up. Gary's response was "Brian who?" and turned him down, not realising that Brian Warner is better known as Marilyn Manson. Personally, when I was younger and wanting to get into the music industry, I got myself a tour of a rehearsal and concert sound / lighting facility in Thamesmead called Tasco; rehearsing there at the time was some generic sounding metal band that I was completely nonplussed by at the time, in fact it was only as I was leaving that I noticed the band's name stencilled on the flight cases - Judas Priest. -
I've come to the thinking that if Warwick made a passive P-bass style, that would be my ideal bass. So, I'm thinking of taking the pre out of my Streamer Stage 1 and fitting different pups. I'll be keeping the original parts though, so I can put them back when the time comes to sell..
It might be worth swapping out the MEC pickups for a set of original spec (ie. Not "X" series) EMG PJs. I did this to my SS1 and it's added so much more "thump" and "woomf" (if you know what I mean).
