1. Linking this thread with another on Radio 2's top 100 albums of all time, how many of their top 100 albums were produced / co-produced by Nile Rodgers? I've spotted 3 (Let's Dance, Diana and C'est Chic), have I missed any? I wonder how that compares with other producers? I can't see any Trevor Horn productions for example.
2.
Clip behind ear type would be best I think.
I had a pair like this and found that they were impossible to wear while wearing glasses, otherwise they were fine.
3. Here's an interesting collaboration featuring (amoungst others) Phil Manzanera (of Roxy Music), Simon Hinkler (of The Mission), Andy Jackson (Pink Floyd and David Gilmour Engineer / Producer) and a bass guitar reputedly found in a skip outside John Paul Jones' house! 4. Does anyone know if these are a straight swap for MEC active PJs as found in a Warwick SS1?
5.
Aria Pro II SB-1000 Last played it around 1992, spent 10 years in the loft (which were not kind), currently being restored. Probably won't gig it, but keeping for sentimental reasons
Snap! I love my SB1000 but it hardly ever gets played, don't know why to be honest.
6. Hi, I've just spotted this on Gumtree: http://www.gumtree.c...itar/1006210102 An absolutely beautiful 1982 Aria SBR150 in what looks like mint condition with the original case and all the case candy that came with it for less than £500! The seller says that the active electronics aren't working, I assume they're refering to the "noise killer" circuit as the pickups on these are actually passive and the tone selector is again a passive affair which switches in preselected resistors (or was it capacitors, I can't remember off hand, I haven't opened my SB1000 up for a while). Just for the record, I have absolutely nothing to do with this sale and in fact if I didn't already have an SB1000 and I wasn't still waiting for my insurance excess to come back to me after some guy smacked into my car before Christmas I'd snap it up in a heartbeat. Actually, even though I REALLY can't afford it, I'm having serious GAS over this one and am contemplating selling one of the kids or some non-essential body part to acquire it.
7.
Bought Rock of Ages for Xmas. Managed to watch 15mins and thought it was utter crap. Back in its box to be watched when nothing else on TV or I'm on my death bed with no option. After Cloverfield this is my worst DVD ever purchased. Not a fan of this although i did enjoy Mama Mia Dave
Got to be honest, it took me a while to get into it and the first 15 minutes are the worst of the film but by the end both myself and the missus were grinning like chimps and really quite enjoying it - although my sister-in-law (who had come 'round for the weekend) just didn't get it all.
8. Having just watched Rock of Ages I'm left wondering whether I've just experienced 2 hours of genius or wasted 2 hours of my life on what is basically cheesy rubbish? I am also planning to go and see the latest film adaptation of Les Miserables later this week and although, on the face of it, these two movies have little in common but they are both musicals albeit from opposite ends of the genre. Now, my question is this: Can musicals as a form of cinema, and of music, ever be taken seriously or are they all as cheesy as a packet of Wotsits in an old sock?
9. If you have you heart set on an A4 estate then why not have a look at a SEAT Exeo - it's exactly the same car (they moved the old Audi production line down from Germany to Spain) but with newer spec engines, improved suspension and quite a lot cheaper. If you pick up one of the "Tech" spec ones it's even got a Bose audio system.
10.
Did you sit in the bath with it?
Isn't sitting in the bath with a plugged in bass frowned upon these days on the grounds of health and safety? But on the topic of new things with an intentionally reliced or "roadworn" appearance - would you buy a new car that had been reliced? It does seem an odd thing to do, if you want an old battered one then buy an OLD battered one surely?
11. Audi A4 estate - good car but rubbish for boot space. The boot space is nice and square but only measures 1m by 1 m. I recently picked up an ESP Eclipse (Les Paul style, six string guitar) from a fellow Basschatter and struggled to fit that in the boot of my one in the case (I had to partially lay the rear seats down). My previous car, on the other hand (a Toyota Avensis), had a Tardis-like quality to the boot where it looked small but could fit in absolutely anything (even a full size Warwick flightcase). I know the Avensis isn't on your list but it's actually a very good car and extremely practical.
12. The main advantage of vinyl is that people who own more than one record (ie. records) don't insist on incorrectly adding an apostrophe as they do with CDs (ie. CD's)!
13. I've just bought a new guitar effects processor (a Boss GT-100) and I've found myself playing loads of new wave / new romantic songs such as Duran Duran's "Hungry Like The Wolf" and even the Sisters of Mercy's "Some Kind Of Stranger" purely because some of the GT-100's ridiculously over-the-top presets match the equally ridiculously over-the-top guitar processing on these tracks (you've gotta love the 80's!). No doubt, if I'd bought an Oberheim OBX synth I'd be playing Van Halen's "Jump" all night. Great fun!
14.
Think beyond the genre. We play Americana but the band who got mentioned most in the studio last week for us was The Beatles. I think the trick is to beg, borrow and steal from the best of everything to give your music more of an edge
Over the years I've been asked on more than one occasion to "make my drums sound like Ringo's" but to be honest I've got no idea what Ringo's drums sound like! At the risk of offending loads of people, to my ears most of the George Martin produced songs have terrible drums (all rattle and no tone) while the only decent drum sound can be found on "Let it be", the only recording that he didn't produce. In the end I just side mic'd the snare and recorded the rest of the kit as dry and as damped as possible.
15. Over the years I too have heard various rumours that either John Taylor didn't play bass or Roger Taylor didn't play drums on various Duran Duran tracks but the only credible report I've ever come across is in an interview with Ian Little, the producer of "Is there Something I Should Know?" in Sound On Sound magazine: Although Ian had some experience of working with Roxy Music prior to Duran Duran, this was his first full production job and he mucked up the recording of the drums leading to him having to manually replace all of Roger Taylor's recorded drums with samples and so, technically speaking, Roger Taylor didn't actually play the drums on this track. Other than that I've never found anything to corroborate these rumours. It seems that, as with most urban myths, a little bit of truth can be twisted to put a very different slant on it.
16.
One of my favourite albums for sound and mix was always ABC Lexicon of love , I thought it was about perfect
You can't go wrong with most of Trevor Horn's productions. Last year's Yes album, despite what you may think of it musically, is one of the best recorded albums i've heard in a long time.
17. Following on from a post i've just made in another thread (about duran duran) where I confessed that Duran Duran's Rio is my "go to" reference album when recording or mixing pop tracks, I just wondered what other recordings people turn to as a reference when recording or mixing various genres of music.
18. A hugely under rated album. It's long been my "go to" reference album when recording or mixing pop tracks.
19. If Geoff Tate does decide to tour over here then I won't be going to see it. On the other hand, the previews that Queensryche, with their new singer, have made available on the internet sound promising - very much in the vain of Rage For Order and I'm looking forward to hearing the finished article.
20. http://www.youtube.c...d&v=A-68ioMFgbc I was quite shocked to see this footage of Queensryche drummer Scott Rockenfield being spat at by singer Geoff Tate (3'58'') during a show following his fallout with the rest of the band. There are more clips from this concert showing similar actions and one from the next gig (Geoff's final one with Queensryche) where he takes five minutes out between songs to tell the fans that had paid to come and see them that they all "suck" and then explain in full detail exactly why. To me, this comes pretty close to being the worst example of irrational and unprofessional behaviour that I've seen from a band (or one member of it) in a long time.
21.
You're not alone. It seems kinda petty if you think about it too much, but it absolutely drives me up the wall.
Yes you're right it does "seem kinda petty". Other petty little things that drive me nuts on Ebay ads are: Advertising basses and guitars as having "Active Pickups" when they don't (happens all the time with EMG Hz pickups) Advertsising basses and guitars as having "Through Neck Construction" when in fact they have a glued-on neck and please don't get me started on Rockbass and Ltd basses and guitars!
22.
They say 'by Fender' on them, as per the listing, Fender is the better search term. Not that this guy has the first clue about using search keywords. Quite a lot say 'Squier series, by Fender' too, so overall they are still Fenders, Squier is like a sub category.
I'm still not sure if he's being truely honest in his listing, not once does he mention Squier anywhere (back to the car analogy, it would be like buying a VW Golf only to get a Skoda Fabia with the seller saying "well the Skoda is by VW") but that's not to say for sure that he's being dishonest either - maybe he doesn't know the difference.
23. This is one of my pet peeves, the number of sellers that mis-advertise Squier guitars and basses as Fenders. Take this listing as an example: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/two-electric-guitars-one-flying-v-and-a-showmaster-by-fender-/200846839062?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item2ec3678d16 The seller is selling two guitars, one of which is Squier Showmaster (easily identifiable from the Fender model by the reverse headstock) but is clearly advertising it as a Fender. I don't want to come across as the "Ebay Police" but this is one of my pet peeves so I emailed the seller letting him know that he is selling a Squire Showmaster not a Fender one, explainig the difference, not that I expect he'll change the listing. It's a bit like advertising a Skoda as a Lamborghini (well they are both made by VW aren't they). My question is this, do you think sellers do this deliberatley in an attempt to catch out the unsuspecting or do they do it in good faith, believing they are selling a genuine Fender?
24. I've recently come across Bare Knuckle Pickups in the context of guitar pickups, my previous experience being mainly with Seymour Duncan in guitar and EMG in bass. The sound clips on their website sound really good and I know BKP have a great reputation with guitar players but I can't find much opinion about their bass pickups. Does anyone have any experience of BKP bass pickups?
