Our 80's band

I bought myself a Euro LX4 a few years ago and its been my main bass for the last couple of years. As I liked the sound and playability so much I decided to purchase a Euro LX5 as was really in need of a 5 string bass. I must say although it's a very playable bass, I'm not overly keen on the sound and it's not a patch on the LX4. It seems to lack the punch and bottom end of the LX4. I'm considering replacing the tone-pump with another preamp and have noticed a few members on here opting for the East U-retro preamp and wondered what peoples experience of this upgrade has been. Unfortunately I've not had the chance to hear the difference between the two preamps so am a little reluctant to spend another £200 to find that the bass is still not for me. Would really welcome any feedback on this, alternatively I can see me trading the bass for something like a Stingray 5.
Now that's some awesome luck right there! Quite ironic as well because I noticed your set list and joked with Tim and Rob saying that your going to need a decent bass player to play most of those songs:P Thanks so kindly for the offer though man, but we've had to cancel the rest of the recording but again that's extremely generous of you and I really appreciate it:) And Rich and Rob have just walked in as I've wrote this!
It's a small world eh!! You're more than welcome. Best of luck in finding the GK.

I live near Wisbech so will keep a look out. If you're stuck for a head, I rehearse at Regal House and regularly leave my gear in the studio, so you're welcome to use my Ampeg SVT 2. I play in a band with Rich and Rob Knight who run the studio. Rob mentioned you were booked in to record.

tuss replied to RIDDIM's topic in Amps and Cabs For Sale
The e-bay auction ended , i put a £400 reserve which was not met. £360 was top bid and when i pay ebay the £40 commission it's not worth me selling. Anyone want a NEW STV410-HLF for £400? this cab is still sealed in box, I've not had the chance to use it yet and need the cash. they currently go for £630 at G.A.K. http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/en/ampeg-svt-410-hlf/9693 collection only, I am in Rushden, Northants
Would be interested in the cab. Not sure when I would be able to get over to Rushden though. I'm not too far away in Kings Lynn. -
I had the same problem with my SVT pro II when I first got it, about a year ago. I did two things:- 1. EMS serviced it - mainly re-attaching valve seats, etc. 2. I then re-valved it myself with Electro-Harmonix 6550's which I got for £110 for 6 on ebay. Since then it has worked faultlessly.
Have since replaced the Svetlana 6550's with Electro-Harmonix valves, and problem solved; amp sounds great now. Thanks for the advice.
From the Ampeg manual - http://www.ampeg.com/pdf/SVT-2PRO.PDF "16. STANDBY/POWER/FAULT INDICATOR LED: This is a multi functional LED. In Standby mode, it glows red. In the On mode (when the high voltage comes on) it glows green. If it does not turn green in the On mode, there is no high voltage present and the unit needs servicing. If the amp detects a fault in the power tube circuit, the high voltage is turned off and the LED flashes between red and green. This usually indicates a bad power tube. The amp will remain in this condition until the unit is turned off." If you've got a flashing red/green LED then it does suggest a problem with the power valves.
The LED just flashes green, but then it is a 90's SVT so maybe he green/red flashing wasn't introduced back then.

My SVT decided to stop working at my last gig. Fortunately the DI out still worked so was able to continue with gig through PA and monitors, but nothing coming through the cab. Turned amp off for awhile between sets to let it cool down, and when turning it back on initially seemed fine, but within a few seconds it stopped working again. The green light on front starting flashing. I'm presuming that it's probably time to replace the power tubes(6550)? I do recall at the start of the evening turning on the amp, not realising that the speaker cable was not plugged into the cab, so wondered whether that may have caused the fault. Any advice would be welcomed. Rob
