It's On the Silent Wings of Freedom from the Tormato album.
I was trying to say that but I just started a whack of P2P and my BB's gone slow.

I found this by accident and just felt it warranted a sharing. I don't know the original track or who Chris Squire is particularly (although I have listened to Yes in the past) and there's nothing technically mental here, I just like the guys walky bits and of course his sound.... and it's got a great ending. Enjoy.
Oh man, it's a pet hate of mine when people use soundcheck to just w*nk about, and then probably complain in the set when they don't have a good sound! Play something that you play in the actual set!! That goes for playing between songs, it sounds amateur! The amount of people who use the gaps to play some 'impressive riff' by Claypool or Wooten is sickening!
I wasn't suggesting for one moment that Sarah attempt a bit of limelight stealing w***ery, just offering some encouragement but way to go bust that bubble like. And as it happens I personally don't have any issue with anyone doing a bit of showboating during soundcheck, actually I quite like hearing what guys can do (even shredder guitarist). If you're good enough to do that then you should also be good enough to play at the same volumes and using the same effects that you are supposed to be soundchecking in the first place. To believe that one riff plucked from your entire set is going to represent your across the board sound is naive. Line check (your solo bit) with whatever makes you happy (bare in mind your levels and tell the sound guy about any effects you use), then to get the most out of your soundcheck the whole band plays a song that has as many troughs and peaks and variations as possible to let the sound guy tweak the combined sound to his requirements. Widdeling between songs is as you say a right no no. There's a guitarist in one of my bands (actually the singer from another band of mine) who has never discovered what his volume knob is for and always plays a riff from the next tune we're about to do... talk about letting the cat out of the bag.
SOLO bit?
Yeah the sound guy needs to get your levels before you all check together.

If it's any consolation, it always seems to be a balls up where organisers are concerned (they've got so much on their plate while you yourself are only concerned about 1 or 2 details and their priorities lie elsewhere) so expect that all plans made (although adhered to by you) will be "flexible" in the mind of others. "Be there for 6 o'clock soundcheck" usually translates as the sound guy might get round to setting up about by 7 then your band might get to check at 8.... but if punters have started coming in by then then you might just get to line check (10 second sound check each) But as I said before don't despair or get wound up by this just use the time to settle in. Don't worry! You'll get up there and it'll be over in a blink of an eye and you'll be gagging for more. Speaking of soundchecks have a cool riff that you're confident with prepared in advance for when you do your wee solo bit. It's a good ice breaker for nerves too.

This is me about 12 years ago............... but then as happens so often, I grew up and got rid of the silly hair. . -
Here's a tip for protecting against nervousness. Get to the venue early and settle yourself in, have a beer or pint of water or whatever just get to know the room. And use the soundcheck to do the same thing, familiarise yourself with the space (if there is any ). And don't worry about f***ups people have come to see a band play not take notes and award minus points for mistakes. All the best.

See what I mean about the body? Yours is single slab while that ebay one is a laminate. I'm sure it's an Eden (or similar).... I have a Jazz one that I've been working on (off and on) for months now and that wood looks mighty familiar. -

Ha ha oddly enough the neck looks the most legit bit to me. You can clearly see the Melody logo burned in and I'm sure we've seen wheel adjusters on F copies on here before but I can't recall which make. Right enough about the machine heads though. There's what looks like to me to be a planer mark on the rear of the upper horn which somehow looks out of place (would they let that go in the 70's?) and the whole body is a composite which kinda makes it look to me like one of those ash Eden bodies that's been stained and to give it it's due finished quite nicely. Just my 2p - I'm dead amateur at this. edit : Ah tish and pish I was hoping to get in before Jon came in to sort us all out. -
Who's whistling me? Oh wait.. its my ears..
Ou7shined replied to Sarah5string's topic in General Discussion
My hearing is shot too. I don't often come away from practice with ringing ears anymore because those frequencies have already been killed off. But to try and make what hearing I have left last a bit longer I always wear my Elacin ER 20's (<£10 ebay) whenever I go out like clubbing or to gigs or whatever - you hear the music better and you also hear everything that folk are saying to you in these noisy situations. I don't ware them when I play live as I think they isolate me from the liveness and the energy of gigging - on stage does sound better though. One of my favourite sounds in the world is cicadas. I'm just back from my holls and very scarily I discovered that I could only hear some of them, even ones that were singing right next to us were completely deaf to my ears. Look after your lugs folks before it's too late. -

He's not really making your life easy if that's the stuff he's giving you to play along to. It's pretty open ended - more like a compliment to a riff than a riff itself. IMO what ever bassline you put on that will become the riff. Maybe that a good thing? I'd be inclined to stick with what you've got there (maybe beef up that Bb-C bit with some 3rds, 4ths and 5ths) and get your head together with the drummer and work out some dynamics.

Yay it worked!
I would post up an example but I don't know how!
What format have you got the clips in? You are allowed to add a 25MB attachment to your posts here. Hopefully this random .wav will work.

Some great advice here 'specially the early Geezer Butler stuff. Check out how he holds a groove but sticks to his own (mainly simple pentatonic) riffs but then he and Tony join forces for the main riff parts. Classic stuff. Also the bit about listening to the music then humming out a bass line - that's probably what I do although on the fly while I'm playing. In one band I play in I'm the primary riff-comer-upper-wither and it can bug me a bit when the guitars follow exactly what I'm playing so what I try to do is write the riff then come up with a separate loose guitar part or harmony and give it to them and tell them to work out something based on that (sometimes I just give them the guitar part and keep the good stuff for myself ) If your guitarist is worth his salt he should be able to help you out like that too instead of dishing out sketchy advice on your playing style.

That was sublime. Thanks. Here's another version where you can see his fingers a bit better. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5fuGVGtq8Cg

My 1st one came with the Markbass bag, it was handy to ware on my chest when I had my bass on my back and my hands filled with GT6B in Gator and lead bags etc. but I took it out of the bag when using it so it kinda defeated the purpose. Since I got my new one, I've just been using the original cardboard box with the polystyrene holders. Unbeatable protection but doesn't look all that cool. Might have a look at one of those B&Q jobs like.
