I'd push for more info about the "promoting markbass gear" thing. Markbass or Proel would know if any were released into circulation without a serial no for promotional use - whilst not being a possible explanation it does sound likely to be complete BS. I would expect that promotional ones remain the property of the manufacturer or distributor and need to be returned.
Cheers Jean-Luc. I queried MarkBass about it last night - I won't hold my breath waiting for a reply from them though. But through your suggestion I contacted Proel this morning. 20 mins later I get this reply.
Hi Rich Thanks for your e-mail. I've never heard of this before. We have had one or two units over here from Markbass for exhibitions or samples on approval and these sometimes have no serial numbers or item codes on but these have always been sent back to the manufacturer after we have finished with them and never sold onto the shops. The label itself is only an adhesive label so could have been peeled off by someone although I can't imagine why anyone would want to do that other than if it was stolen and they didn't want it to be identified. Unfortunately its the chance you take when buying off ebay. Sorry I couldn't have been more help. Kind Regards Danny
I think it's fairly certain to have been half inched then. Time to get back in touch with the seller. I hate this bit.
Yamaki P copy, selling from Switzerland, and £489 BIN. The seller copied the description from one review on Harmony Central. Looks like quite a nice bass, but surely not worth paying that for it. Yamaki P copy
It does look in superb nick tho. Loving the black. What's with the unusual truss rod adjuster (I presume that's what that is in the neck plate) I've not seen owt like that before. -
I've had a reply.
hi i would disagree in terms of its condition being second hand and the fact that it was hardly used just for personnel practice! having been traveling for sometime it sat there collecting dust! with regards to the serial number it was given to me by a friend who was promoting mark bass gear!
Well I sure wasn't expecting that. What do you think? And as for the condition I'll let you guys decide who's telling the truth.
A beer festival in Sussex. Chucking it down with rain and we were in the middle of the bill but we still enjoyed it. They provided all the PA and free beer which was good. Got a recording from the sound desk too which was a bonus. It actually sounded ok! Typical Britain though - grey clouds yesterday, blue skies today....
We've got it today. Nice and sunny yesterday and tipping it down today. Thankfully it's the lazy straight down stuff, we often get the horizontal variety here. None the less, planned trip to zoo with the bairn cancelled.

That's just it. I've emailed him now. Let's see what he's saying.
I once bought an amp described as 'new' by the eBay seller. It came without a box, manual or even a 'kettle' lead and it was covered in grubby fingermarks on the anodised plate around the controls...
That's exactly how this one came (albeit in it's rucksack). Practically the first thing I did with it was wipe it down.
But you bought in good faith and the amp can't now be traced anyway.
Absolutely, I just have a conscience about it. (a mix of bad karma and a niggling feeling about receiving possible stolen goods)
leper affinity- opeth now working on deliverance i think it will take a while
Good luck man. Myself, spookily I've been re-learning a bunch of RATM tracks too after going to see a Rage trib-act last weekend. But the honest answer to the question is not as cool -> the last song I learned was Seventeen by Ladytron (the Soulwax remix) not so much learn it as listen to it once then play it. I'm considering offering it up as cover for an up n coming gig. I reckon it might be a good surprise done as a balls out heavy cover.
I don't understand why it's a problem that the label isn't there. Even if it is older than described, is that a bad thing? Am I missing something blindingly obvious here? EDIT: If you're concerned that the amp may be fake or something then post some pictures on here. I'm sure we could figure out if there's anything fishy going on from a few decent pics. If you do want to do this then take a pic of the insides too (the top of the amp unscrews easily with a small philips screwdriver), I've geeked-out over the insides of the LM, LMK and TA503 a few times. Not that i know anything about electronics but I'm 99% sure I could tell a Mark bass amp from any other amp, has anyone else seen the insides of these things? It's a work of art!!
I don't doubt that it is genuine. I'm worried it's nicked.
As you bought it on ebay/ though paypal, could you not open a dispute if it is not as described? If you have written evidence of its description and it is not 'immaculate' and could therefore be older than described too ( why else remove the build date and s/n?) see if you could get your money back and wait for one that is as described? Unless it was really cheap..............? PS Labelled with love too.
I haven't approached him about it yet, I only discovered about the serial last night. I'll drop him a line and see what explanation he can offer about it. I'm not disappointed with it's condition, it's really not in bad nick it's just that "immaculate" is a fairly black and white description not open to interpretation and to my mind the guy hasn't been honest about it. It wasn't cheap I'd say pretty much on the money for an immaculate specimen plus rucksack.

Well it's just that this one doesn't. I'd read in reviews guys mentioning the date of theirs and I was thinking "how the hell do they know" as there's nothing on this one to say. Then I noticed there's no serial. I can only think of one reason why you would remove the serial... really well. Also the guy was real snappy with me when I dropped him a friendly email after I paid instantly then didn't hear anything from him for 3 or 4 days. I put his attitude down to the fact that the guy is from London and dudes can run a little hot in the big smoke (sorry guys  present company excepted of course ) he also informed me that he was in Wales for a while but it would be worth the wait considering the immaculate condition of the amp. Well it turned up barely boxed and not immaculate but in I'd say "fair" condition - there's a jaggy scratch underneath and the corners have seen a little action. Nothing I couldn't live but why lie? I love the amp but it's the lack of a serial that really bothers me.
-
Could you have a look at the back of yours please, does it have one of those white labels with a serial number etc on it? I bought one off the bay off some dude last week and I'm getting a bit of a bad vibe off it and him.

I stumbled upon this while researching something completely different. I've not had time to read it right through yet but a quick scan over looks mighty interesting. edit : pic added.

It sound tricky to start with but if you break it down all you got to do is learn > the intro run > 3 riffs > the middle 8 (which is a caker). The 3 riffs are the verse, the join bit and the chorus. I'm not a mode master but they all sound like they'd be pentatonic /blues fills. There are variations but nobody will know if you learn one way per section and just repeat these exactly every time. The worst bit is getting the stop/starts nailed.
.... Fair play to the guy in question, he's acknowledged the feedback given from you guys and re listed it.
Although he is still presenting an overinflated opinion of this bass. I don't want to harang this guy but I don't believe his BS story, I believe he intentionally set out to rip someone off and after getting busted he's toned it down. good copy - NO collectors item - NO... not in the sense that's implied anyway
I know what though, if I see something on ebay I like the look of I will post it here and let you guys have a look before making any bids.
That's what to do.
On 17-Jun-08 at 23:35:54 BST, seller added the following information: This bass was up before as an original, I would like to thank the guys that pointed that it was a good copy possibly one of the lawsuit ones that were produced in the 70's,They did say however it was a collectors item. The bass player in my band has played it and never cottoned on it was a copy and said it was the best Jazz Bass he had played. There is now a realistic reserve on it,but the original neck plate with s/no is worth a fair bit. I bought this bass 10years ago in good faith believing it to be a genuine Fender and was told it was an original, but you can't win em all. I must apologise to anyone who bid on it for any hassle caused. It was a genuine mistake on my part (I am a drummer and basses are not my specialist field).
re-listing What a goon. He's leaving the neck plate on. You can get a cheapie for less than a fiver.
Now is it just me or does that photo of the bass from the rear look as though it's been "touched up" ? The neckplate seems to jump out of the photo somehow, as if it's not ion the same light as the rest of the photo, and it looks slightly offset to the left ? (Now...where are these photos of the Apollo moon landings ....) Suspicious, moi ?
I think the pic is genuine enough but when you zoom in, it does look like it's been put on a bit squint. After enhancing the plate area I'm fairly sure (not conclusive) that I see a 4 and an 8 on it for the last digits of the serial# which ties in rather nicely with the one he bought earlier.
-
However, if I had to point to some damning evidence, I'd say this might be it. It's the last purchase he's made, 11 June 2008. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=250249467610 His bass auction was posted 15 June. I don't now if he could've received the neck plate in time for those photos, but it all looks very questionable.
Actually the auction ended 25-May-08 18:40:30 BST so it's entirely possible.... and likely. LOL It's strange to think the plate is worth more than the guitar it's nailed to.

The guy seemed to think they're ok. -
True.... but let's face it us musicians are a weird bunch. I know guys (myself included to some extent) that are actually better/more comfortable at communicating through the gift of music than they are through real verbal or written communication. I got a call the other night from a genius guitarist mate that was basically a feverish bombardment of him recounting all his news, darting from one subject to the next in no particular order and back again, then off at another tangent before I got a chance to add my "u-huh's" and "oh really's" where apropriate. It's just the way his brain is wired. I'm prepared to accept that this Fergie Fulton dude didn't mean to be a cock (although it comes over that way) and probably just used the critique as grounds to set up a rapport.
