Ska's not really my cuppa tea these days (although I was seen stage diving at a ska covers gig the other week) but when I was into it I really loved the bass line to Can't Get Used To Losing You by The Beat. It's all roots and thirds type stuff but it hits the spot.

I've used CH Guitars before for cheap bits'n'bobs, they are good to deal with but to be honest you gets what you pays for. I got a black Hipshot-esque bridge from them and the paint scratches pretty easy - the metal in their screws can be a bit weak too, ok if you are gonna put them in and leave them I guess, but I got some machinehead screws which had to come out after I'd seated the tuners and they were knackered first time so I had to get more. I would buy from them again if needs be but I'm just saying don't expect too much.

Being self taught, probably all my habits are lazy/wrong but what bugs me in particular.... left hand - finger per fret technique is rubbish. I subconsciously support my pinky with my ring finger on the D & G strings and often slide up a fret in runs with the 2 fingers clasped together rather than going there directly with my pinky. It's not that I have small fingers (which I definitely don't have) I can only put this down to years of playing guitar before switching to bass and I've never developed the correct pinky response. When I remember, I practice not doing this but I hate finger exercises. right hand - I get a bit over excited and finger the E string (normally tuned down a tone) too hard which slaps it off the toppest frets. I didn't really notice this until we went into the studio and the engineer made a big deal out of it. I've managed to lessen this by playing closer to the bridge.

At worst they are a paid rehearsal. We did one to about 30 people a few weeks back and I put in as much effort as I usually do and had a blast in the process. Stick with it man.

I'm looking for a fretless for a project too and these guys keep popping into my inbox every day and sometimes I think "will I" (coz I like the fretboard overshoot) but I think I'm best to hold out for something more befitting. It has got to be nasty. They do a version with tuners for like £5 more. But as you said for this money it might be worth a pop.

I listen to a fair bit of metal but wouldn't use it to define my tastes coz I'm up for a broad range of toons. However all I'm listening to at the mo is Opeth, Down, Nile and Neurosis. My originals band plays a sort of evil RATM/soundgarden fusion you couldn't call it metal tho. Our Pearl Jam tribute band does what I'd consider mainstream rock (and boy do we rock) but our lead guitarist is from [url="http://www.myspace.com/pryon"]this lot[/url]. Fan-bleedin-tastic!
