How you finding the music scene/gigs where you are?
scoobystig replied to ellie's topic in General Discussion
Most people around here with any sort of track record will want £50 per man min or £250 for the band. The pubs will pay more but want to keep a lid on it but basically you need to work out how much you want to push a gig for £350. If you fail at £350..to get numbers in... you'll not get it again so some bands just accept £250 for 2x45's and the LL will wear that even on a poorish night. But, again, do that too often and you'll lose the booking and of course, LL's talk to each other so you need to ask yourself if you can be bothered with such a negatibe rep..?? Conversely, pack out a pub and sell £3k worth of drinks and the LL's will be banging down your door.. To me...that is the entire name of the game and it doesn't matter how good you are... it is drinks over the bar that is the deal..
And that there is the head of the nail truly hit Most pubs the LL ain't even there, but you can be sure they check the numbers the following morning Pull people in and put money over the bar and you'll have that gig whenever you pick up the phone to them, alas we did play one pub that was so packed that people were buying drinks in the pub over the road and then coming back over, I'm not sure this was the desired effect -
Where the hell are these £250 gigs?
That's the minimum we charge !! Rock covers band playing Friday or Saturday nights, usually 2x 1hr sets plus encore But we do take a full PA system and a full controllable lighting rig and put on a show as much as we can in a pub, -
Cheers guys Paul. That bass balls seems close enough for me and for £30 how can you go wrong, I've sent him a message

Without spending loads and going into a never ending cycle of chasing the perfect muse bass tone I have a boss chorus, ebs octabass and an ashdown distortion pedal, can I use these to get close enough for a pub covers band rendition or is there another cheap pedal I should look at Obviously this has probably been asked a million times already ! Thanks

How you finding the music scene/gigs where you are?

As I am now doing most of the booking I find the trouble is that most pubs round here are already booked out for the year with the same bands pretty much on a revolving 2 month cycle No one seems willing to give a new band a go, they all want you to have a following, which you can't get as no one books you ? So we have expanded out of town to Witney, Carterton, Andover, chippenham, melksham, Tisbury and winchester, so for a Swindon band, of the twenty five or so gigs we have booked there is only about 5 in Swindon pubs A few of the pubs are tied up with a promotions agency who we simply won't deal with as they do nothing for their fee more than what we can do ourselves, Ie sharing a picture in facebook groups and pay a pittance anyway as there are far too many bands willing to do it for hardly anything -

Regular gigging and its effects on relationships
scoobystig replied to sprocketflup's topic in General Discussion
I took 5 years off during the birth of our child before getting back into a band First we did weekly rehearsals but now we a gigging we don't rehearse apart from once every 6 weeks, gigs are about 2 to 3 times a month, sometimes she comes. Sometimes not, but there is never any issue over it She works retail and so I have our son more or less all weekend anyway and she gets days to herself in the week when he is at school She told me to get back into it after watching mettalica at Glastonbury and then has done nothing but encourage since telling me to buy new rigs and new bass's My previous missus was fine with it too, but that's because we were going to be rock and roll stars and she saw pound signs, didn't respond as well when we broke up and the singer started writing non to nice lyrics about her -
I split my signal out with an AB box, run it through a micro pog it give it an octave up then through a line 6 modelling amp to add distortion and smart harmonics to create a power chord This way I can play bass and power chords during the solos or intros or where ever it's needed This allows us to play the full intro to poison by Alice cooper with only one guitarist I can also play the distorted guitar to the choruses of mettalicas nothing else matters while the guitarist keeps the clean sound going
-
I run two rigs, it's easier to be able to EQ the bass and guitar sound independently Basically bass runs into a MXR AB box first to split the signal and also allows me to switch either signal on or off as required The bass route then goes though Boss Chorus, ashdown distortion, ebs octabass and then onto the Aguilar TH500 bass amp The guitar route then goes to micro pog to generate the octave up note, ehx freeze pedal and then into a line 6 spider 4 guitar amp, I use the spider 4 as it has the smart harmonic feature which also allows to me to add an additional octave or a upper fifth to create a power chord The foote controller for the spider also allows me to change patches and has a volume pedal which makes dropping the guitar effect in and out easy Combine this with the lighting controller and Michael flattely eat your heart out Picture of me planning out pedalboard

New bass added to the line up thanks to a highly successful ebay transaction across the pond The blue/purple flame maple prescision lyte joins the Tobacco burst

No. Doesn't effect me. I still can't play any better !! Lol

Guys The jack on my fender precision lyte is causing issues, it is definitely the socket on the bass Where is the best place to source a replacement for it, it has 3 wires connected to it and it is an active bass, I assume 2 of the cables complete the circuit so that the battery is only live when a jack plug is connects in Thanks
And I suppose not all bands are to everyone's taste - I liked all those in the list regardless of musical content, but maybe that's not the idea?
Not everything I hear on the radio is strictly to my taste, but I still listen to it Music is the spice of life and it's all different, and we are helping fellow bass players not nessacarily having to like what they play
-
I took a break for 4/5 years with no playing after splitting from my last band, packed the basses away and sold all my rig Only just got back into it and started a new band and really loving it I did go from an originals focused band to a covers band now though so less stressful
-
Thanks guys,we are just 2 away from the magic ton I'm pretty sure I've got you all, but some may not be from the personal page so I might need to go round again soon
