Need a favour from Bristol (or surrounds) Based Bassists?
Old_Ben replied to Chownybass's topic in General Discussion
live in bristol give me a pm -
When I used to work for a large pub company using Events UK we never had any issues with bands not being paid. (Another thing you can use EventsUK for is getting info for venues that use the service for more paid gigs.)

you thought of using a capo on the 5 string? or tuning the 5 string up 1/2 a step? Failing that add a 5 string set to your 4 string (might need to widen the nut a little to accommodate a B string in there. And the strings shouldn't be so loose.

I created some drum patterns(on the pc and exported them to my phone) to come up with melodies or just to practise my timing, or to help me with anything I'm struggling with. Just focusing on the rhythm is easier to do without a fretboard at your disposal!
-
Anyone have or know of an andriod app that you can create midi drum patterns and export the midi info into reaper? I'm thinking I might be better just buying a USB midi keyboard but I'll find it hard to store one without the missus asking me; "how much it was" and "why did I buy that thing taking up space in the front room?"

Everyone has problems that needs ironing out, if he is your mate and you don't want to kick him out, a good sit down addressing the issues would probably help. If your whole band agrees with you on what he is doing wrong then they should be all up for it. But keep it on track and not get petty with name calling, recording it may help, but if he is inexperienced or doesn't have a great musical ear, he obviously won't hear the problems. maybe writing down the music theory with the scales/chords involved would help him understand what he is doing to the song.

With band stuff I tend to give a riff, chorus and verse sections just for people to learn the basics of what is going on, and then we play around with structures and other bits to make the song a band song as opposed to them playing as I gave it to them. But we all have an understanding that nothing is concrete and anything can be changed if we feel it's not working. Getting too attached to something you've given to a band to make a song will just end in it either; not being used, or people not liking the song to it's fullest potential if they feel that they weren't allowed to add their stamp on it. Unless you're a solo artist and they're session musicians I don't see why anyone would do this anyway.

Normally I'll start with a riff I like the sound of, then work out roughly what the basic chords are for it, then build a verse and/or chorus and rinse and repeat. Maybe keeping chords but changing the rhythm or vice versa. Add bass solo and then fin.

If designing my own studio I would go for a large room for doing live (band performance recordings) and maybe 2 - 3 cab / vocal booths, this would make for a very flexible studio that can do live band tracking, which can isolate guitars and bass e.t.c, this is all dependant though on your friends regular client base does and what their needs are, he should ask his regulars why they keep coming back and as he is expanding if they have anything they would like him to try as they would be his best source of feedback! But one thing I found that is massively over looked with studios is a chill out zone where people can relax and forget about the pressures of recording. If you are in a studio for over 2 weeks a band can get very cabin feverish and this obviously makes tracking / recording more difficult, so if there is a space to keep everyone happy then that is almost as important as being a good producer / engineer! On my last visit into a studio there was live in accommodation too. (the guy converted his mansion) into one half recording studio with 5 bedrooms above it, and then also had a band chill out zone / shed with kitchen in his garden, I'm not saying your friend could buy a mansion and do the same thing, but just saying this made for a very good environment to record, we were there for 3 weeks in total and we would have been at each others throats if we hadn't had the space, this studio is used by plenty of up and coming acts and bands. Also at this studio we all had our own monitor mix gadgety-thingy-ma-bob, these allowed us to turn up the bass, down the guitars, and add more kick and snare, click track, everything to how we wanted it to sound right there and then! Very handy little things. Would actually quite like to buy one of these for myself and a wireless set of in ear monitors for live playing ... (but that's another conversation for me and my missus as to why there is £400+ missing from the savings account!) Same studio also had a vintage Neve desk and we couldn't be happier with how everything sounded! It's just another layer in the character of the sound that we love. I highly recommend if anyone gets the chance to get recordings done on one then do! (One of our more music-geek band members was very excited when he read the equipment spec of the studio) Hope my insight was somehow insightful!
I didn't realise how short the songs were until we tracked them in the studio... The other two we did in the session are a bit longer (but not by much), but yes it's definitely something we'll look at going forward.
Nothing wrong with short songs, remember it's quality over quantity in my book! (also some of the big name radio stations don't like to play songs longer than 3 minutes, that is something to keep in mind too)

I like the dedication to the recording, there are far too many starts I have made on things, where life just gets in the way!
-
you should be able to add any fx into your monitor feed, just make sure the fx is active as you play and that you have record monitoring switched on. regarding actual fx with amps sims and stuff the majority of the stuff is paid for, but some come with basic free trial versions such as amplitube (the one i use) and you can buy different cab sims for a cost. I would never condone looking for the full software packages on torrent sites.

On stage vocal monitoring. Active or passive? Recommendations?
Old_Ben replied to Skinnyman's topic in General Discussion
could always try in ear monitor system our vocalist swears by it, there are some good things out there and they dont take up much room in the van/cars -
Seen a couple of touring band engineers using them, think they request specific desks from the venues they are compatible with. From the looks of it you can very quickly upload a preset patch to the desk and tweak to the room for hetting consistant results in different venues

Can't hear myself warm up at rehearsal, so I now just sit and wait!

+1 for waving arms or the 'kill it' gesture. If you dont make an active fuss about it then he will never learn to stop -
If you get a multi input interface there is no reason why you couldn't both play together on a computer program such as reaper, and output it through computer speakers / a hifi and control the bass using inbuilt plugins etc, you could even import other music into it to make a more controlled practise environment Failing that put some thick foam under your amps to prevent it travelling too far through the building.
-
you could tune the 5 string up half a step to put it into the right tuning

Got a super low B 0.145 gauge, that'll keep it nice and tight!

@big red; No we don't have a record deal, wish we did a label would be helpful! I've seen loads of big name bands even use a pledge system; Megadeth for example are nust finishing one I believe! I think some record companies see it as a way of not needing to advance bands and therefore encourage thier acts to do this kind of system, so if we did have a label they probably wouldn't realistically give us loads of money to make a record. We have had a successful campaign on our last album which we hope to reproduce this time round!

The basic idea is that fans of a band will preorder an album/ep to help fund said album/ep with other incentives/items for sale too, such as studio visits or private gigs; www.pledgemusic.com
