I was just wondering how many of you lovely folk have either used or bought music via a pledge system like www.pledgemusic.com or indiegogo or equivalent? My band has used it to some success in the past and are planning on using it for our latest album! I'm curious as to what you all think about this style of music creation / sales.

I have in the past, I'll always use my head and pedal board so I at least know what's going on with my sound, nothing worse than being on stage and using someone else's gear where there is a problem and you're under pressure to sort it out. Which 9 times out of ten is a simple problem but because you're unfamiliar with how the amp in question works and its something simple like it's on standby.

I'ma just leave this here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJBfN2nhAhg

Mine irritates me no end, just seems to swing / spin forward all the time!

IF push came to shove and I hated the way the bass sounded it wouldn't get used, but we are working with a producer and paying him to help us make an album, to make decisions about sound feel mood etc, so It'd be pretty stupid of us to ignore anything he suggests esp. as we are paying him for this exact reason, also I'm not averse to trying new things just to shake things up. Just like we'll be using different heads / cabs, in total there'll probably be a lot of kit knocking around, if half of it doesn't get used then that's all cool, but if we use everything that's also cool, anyways I need another bass as I only have 1!

I'll 'look after it' for you!

He isn't after a specific sound just another option that sounds different to what I have
My mate works in a place where they rent gear to some BIG names but that could be expensive... If possible you could buy something the producer would approve of (p bass perhaps??) second hand and either keep or sell second on at little or no loss.
Problem is not enough money for such a thing otherwise I would do just that!

in our last production session he was going on about ebows!

P.S if anyone would be willing to lend me something that'd also be greatly appreciated!
I can't imagine how that bass could sound in any way 'bad'; even less so if you're going to be using disto pedals..! Obviously, I don't know the bloke (nor this particular bass...); on top of that, I'm a drummer, so what would I know, but that seems an extremely odd comment from a studio engineer. I'd hate to think what he'd say if I walked in with my Hofner Verithin..! If he can't get a bass like that to sound good, I'd have serious doubts in his competence. I could be wrong (yes, it happened once, but it was a long time ago... ). Still, if you can wangle an alternative that Monsieur can handle, go for the 'keeping the peace' solution; a loan from a fellow BC would be great (and kudos to any such fellow..!). Good luck with the project; tell us how it pans out, please..? Edit: How many snare drums is your drummer taking in..? A couple of Ludwigs, a Gretsch or two, maybe a Tama and a vintage Slingerland..? One never knows; it could change all for the technician.
I don't think it's in terms of good or bad, maybe my use of the word 'problem' is making it sound like I'm being told to not use my stuff, but I'm thinking it's more in terms of options for choice to suit a song with regards to feel and blending in, as opposed to a negative "my bass will sound s#*@ in the studio" He is taking in sets of different cymbals and a couple of alternative snares I think. Will keep people posted on how it all goes!
Rescue Rooms Nottingham
I hope you enjoyed it! Von Hertzen Bro's are really nice guys!
So he has no idea then and just wants you to do his work for him.
I would call it due diligence, if there is a problem a solution / alternative to hand would be helpful.
I saw you supporting Von Hertzen Brothers recently, bass sounded fine to me but I know what picky gits some of these studio types can be. On the other hand the studio can be pressurising enough without going in with a completely alien instrument as BRX says. If you go for a loan make sure you have it well enough in advance so you are as familiar with it as your regular squeeze.
Which show did you come to?
Any of your mates/mates of mates got anything that they're willing to loan you for the recording session? Did this recommendation come from the studio? If so, then ask them if they have anything you can borrow (not hire, as it's their recommendation!). Change the strings on yours about a week before going into the studio, and get them "played in".
It came from the producer, and he doesn't have any basses of his own, he is bringing me in some different distortion pedals though! Alas my friends don't really play bass
I take it, the recommendation has come from your producer? I'd ask him what he would suggest as a suitable alternative. I did he recommended me several all of which I don't have access to; Fender P, Warwick streamer / corvette, or a nice spector Also is that 10-15 days for just the tracking or for everything including the mixing 10 days of tracking, then a further 5 days for vocals / solos / overdubs What sort of music do your band play? Do you have a link to somewhere where we can hear a previously recorded track or two? https://www.youtube....lackWolf/videos

I can't imagine that bass sounding particularly out of place on anything. Or any other bass, for that matter. And why would you need a bass with a completely different 'feel'? I would question this advice.

"We dislike your choice of instrument, therefore, if you bring other instruments with you, you won't be too offended when we tell you that your instrument sounds like poo" OR "we are only able to get a good bass sound from specific basses, and yours isn't one of them"?
The 'delicate' way he put it was that; if for whatever reason when we get into recording we don't have the right sound we can make broad changes to shake things up as opposed to spending 3 hours tweaking knobs to mke something work. After doing so either way we'll know that the new sound is wrong or there is a different problem

Living in bristol, currently play ltd surveryor 5 string. (active emg) that sound meaty. We'll be in the studio for about 10-15 days plus 3 days of pre production with our producer!

I am going in to the studio soon to record another album, and it's been advised that I take another bass with a completely different feel and sound to what I have just in case my (only) bass doesn't suit the sound of a song. Now my problem is that I only have the one and can't really afford to buy a new / used decent enough bass, so is there anywhere in the southwest that rents decent basses?

Amp vibrating off cab....any cures..?

Velcro might be a good backup -
Google drive can be handy, but storage i think is only 15gb which depending what you use could get full up quickly! I use both systems though!

Tonight Hopefully I'll get Some guitars down for my attempt

Customer service - how long does it take?
Old_Ben replied to Bassman Steve's topic in General Discussion
The first two at roughly the same time; purely as all you do is wrap and pop to post office / arrange collection by courier 1. An amp which requires boxing up and couriering; Something that you take off a shelf, put in a jiffy bag and mail. Only because it requires making then mailing 2. A hand made speaker cable; -
Compressors with bass, is it really that necessary?
Old_Ben replied to RustInPeace90's topic in Effects
I'm sure engrs have their own ideas for their mix
I would be very surprised if they didn't compress and limit bass output purely so they don't accidentally blow the speakers! When they say; 'play as loud as you're going to during the set' that is probably just what they are doing. -
use all the mics and see which sounds best on the day! there is no rule saying a 57 has to record a guitar!

Anyone played at The O2 Academy, Islington?
Old_Ben replied to The Admiral's topic in General Discussion
Then they'll probably be in the small room, and tiny stage, this is almost certainly not worth the hassle speaking from experience, esp if they are outside of London. Sounds like the typical promoter doing no real work and just taking money of unsuspecting bands. (Make sure they don't get in a situation where they have to supplement a shortfall on ticket sales out of their own pocket. -
Set up a vote for which entry you should use!

Anyone played at The O2 Academy, Islington?
Old_Ben replied to The Admiral's topic in General Discussion
I have played a couple of times. Make sure they fill in and give a decent stage spec for what they need and a rider to try and get some decent drinks etc for free. Parking wise they need to contact the venue to have a space booked, but it's very likely the spaces will be taken up already at this point, otherwise they'll be paying for on the street parking nearby, or going into the car park underneath the shopping centre The academy is located in! Load in is quite handy as there is a service lift straight on to stage / main area. The crew are very helpful and friendly, but don't expect them to lug your gear for you. The merch area is a nightmare so they might want to get there early to bag a spot otherwise they'll be ducktaping tshirts to the toilet doors! I've had great fun at that place, so remind them to enjoy it!
