1.
Don't know about the BP50 but I recently bought a Digitech CF-7 (Chorus Factory) and that hums something wicked. Shame, because it's a really nice pedal otherwise. I'm re-arranging my pedal board to put it in a separate loop so that it doesn't irritate me too much.
Thanks for the reply, its not hum, its hiss though. I'm just really trying to work out if its a normal thing with these, or if its faulty. and if I might be better off with a zoom one. Would be nice to get an authentic-ish Fender Bassman sound without having to cart my old 2X15 and Bassman 100 head around.
 2.
I really hate it when sellers give it all this 'I'm not sure if it's a Rickenbacker'. Of course it has a Rickenbacker name plate on the head - she bought one on the 'bay 5 months ago!
Nice one !
 3. Sorry if its already been mentioned, this is getting to be a long thread. Broken Dream, Python Lee Jackson....Who played it ? was it Ronnie Wood ? Al Capone, Prince Buster. More or less anything from Bruce Foxton.
 4.
Anybody know of a place willing to make one-off covers for cabs?
I found a local upholserer guy who usually does setees and stuff like that. Took him the measurements, cost me a tenner for one for a 4X10 combo using good quality tough material that was an offcut.
 5. I've always been a straight in bloke, but on a whim I bought a Digitech BP50 off ebay, partly just to play around with, but also to try and maybe fatten up my sound a bit. Trouble ie, its really noisy, even in bypass and with a small amp turned well down theres a pretty high level of hiss. Is it normal with a cheapo pedal like this, or is it just a duff one ? I'm using it on batteries, so it aint a PSU issue. The noise gate makes no difference at all.
 6. Used 3 in the last couple of years. Carbon in B'ham have Laney 4X10 combos, OK but not great, One in Coventry has a choice of Laneys and Hartke 3500 4X10 combos, so impressed with the Hartke I bought one, one in the Black Country has a (pribably 70s vintage) Carlsbro Stingray with a 1X15, OK but not to my taste. Oh, and a few weeks ago I was in one that had a Stagg Combo.....nuff said, wont be going back without one of my own. Really cant believe the crap some of em have.
 7.
What would I do with the ferrite rings? What's weird to me is that it seems I can run the exact same chain but using my rack of pres instead of my desk, and it's radio free. The desk is a cheap POS I bought off here for £20ish so perhaps it's that?
There are a few types, some you thread the cable through, some you thread in and out twice, some clipover the cable( the type probably fitted to tyour PC monitor etc ) just follow the instructions that are with them, Dont bother asking the Maplins staff, theyre usually - not always -anoracks who know less than they think. Plenty on the interweb about them. some types work better than others depending on various things such as frequency, length of cable, strength of the signal, impeadence etc.. http://www.stevelarkins.freeuk.com/computer_interference.htm
 8. Any cable thats earthed at one end is in effect an aerial. Unfortunately, this applies to the screen on pretty well any Mic or guitar lead, patch lead etc. sometimes worse if the cables are coiled up. Balanced cables are far less likely to be the culprits, but if it is being picked up by the screen, it could be anywhere. You could try these, http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?moduleno=32792 they only cost a few pence each, so no great loss if it dont help. Try and be methodical though, and see if you can work out where its actually being picked up. Apart from the leads above, its possible that its being picked up in a mains cable, or just about anything else, including internal wiring in the equipment itself. There is a lot on interweb amateur radio sites regarding RF interference, always worth a look.
 9. Bought my daughter a Hartke 1200 off ebay, for about £50 I think the guy was pig sick when I collected it. Cracking little amp, So good I tend to 'cofiscate it' a lot. DI socket on the fronts really useful.
 10. If this really a 70s one, it might be good. I just dont like the ?? in the description. Tempted to have a punt, I've never even tried a fretless. 11. Mooching abbout on youtube looking for Feelgoods covers came across this. Even with its obvious faults its gorra be one of the best, if just for the spirit of it. Better than some of the current line up feelgoods stuff thats on there. Even the drummer looks like he's having a good time. 12.
ive always been fascinated by the freemasons, its a great idea and concept and obviously works for its members (or they wouldnt bother being members) much like here its a gathering of people with a similar mindset as far as im concerned
So what happens if - for example - you get stiched up for a lot of money and go to your solicititor, who gives you advice which dont quite ring true, and you find out a few years later that the person who stiched you up and the solicitor are from the same lodge ? After all, the solicitor aint gonna declare the conflict of interest and tell you, now is he ??
 13.
It's true. I'm not a Mason but years ago I found out how to do the 'I'm a really very top bloke' handshake and had lots of fun with it. As for the 'do another bassist a favour' thing? Nice idea, but wide open to litigation from unsuccessful candidates.
Aw C'mon, dont keepit to yourself.....
 14. Wash me hands before I play it, swipe the beer stains off now and again. Whichever one I'm using at the time resides in the living room, if it gets really bad, the missus polishes it !
 15.
Well, he'll soon have some (negative) feedback, if there's any justice!
He's got nout to lose then has he, just re register with a new name. ebay feedback is a waste of time, calculated in a wierd way so as not to put people off buying, how can somebody with only about 50 feedbacks have 99.something positive ? ebay want customers and commission and dont really care about much else imo. Its just there to make you feel better, so you dont take up ebays time with complaints. I have never taken much notice of it and wouldnt really hesitate to buy from anybody unless they have a lot of nagatives. Had more problems with people who have a low count, or hundreds of positives tbh. Buyers can sometimes be nutters as well, but you cant leave them a negative.
 16. long as you got the money back, I'd just put it down to experience, wouldnt even bother with the feedback. I know its dissapointing but lifes just too short. Maybe a few phone calls just to wind him up a bit so he dont do it again without a reasonable starting bid, but thats all. Probably happens a lot. I dont do ebay much, but noticed the same Fender bassman 100 re listed about 3 or 4 times in the last few months, went for £510 at least twice.
 17. When I played in 'standards' covers bands always refused to play All Right Now, hated playing any version of Knocking on heavens door or anything by the Beatles. Generally, if I actually hated it, I wouldnt play it.
 18.
Having just typed out twenty address labels to send the Zon free prize draw goodies to, I noticed one address was to a Wem Road. I used to lived near an aerodrome which is now a housing estate and the authorities named the new roads with names like Spitfire Way and Hurricane Drive. It got me thinking ...if Basschat folk could live on a (virtual) estate with bass related names for the roads, where would you like to live? PS I'm busy really!
How about Trevor Burton on Trent. Slightly off topic, theres a housing estate in Birmingham that used to be an aerodrome, where thr roads are named after aircraft etc. Apparently theres a Douglas Bader Walk there...
 19.
Any feature from a stagg amp
Have to agree, used one in a rehearsal room last weekend. Is it actually possible to get useable sound from one ?? Dunno what any of the knobs were meant to do as the transfer had rubbed of all of em.
 20.
Yeah two fingers is fine. I pick with three but not alternating - I use my second and third fingers as "second" fingers, alternating with my index, and the spare one I use to do rakes or switch strings or play octaves or whatever. As for speed, you need to be totally relaxed or you will hit a limit. The more you play fast the more relaxed about it you will be, and the more you play bass generally the more relaxed about it you will be, so just put the hours in.
Sound advice that. I find if I dont try and keep my RH relaxed, I get problems with pain in my forearm, bit like tennis elbow. Also bending your wrist a bit, so your fingers are nearer to being at right angles to the strings helps. BTW, I played in punk bands in the 70s and didnt use a pick.
 21.
Get yourself to a store and try out as many basses as you can. Go with what feels and sounds best to you.
What Mog said, but - dont buy it, go elsewhere and do the same, then think about it, then do it all again. Not in a hurry are you ?
 22. Yeah, It'll be fine. Works on a different principle, but the general ideas the same.
 23. Even if it was a valve amp, it wouldntt need 5 or 10 minutes. Its obviously duff. Does it cracle and pop if you thump it (scientific term for a vibration test) ? Could be a few things, but if its new - I'd chuck it back a the dealer pronto.
 24. I did one using a Mighty mite Jazz neck that cost me £38 off ebay, and an unknown Precision copy body, scratch plate and a few other bits and pieces came from USA via ebay. Well chuffed with the neck and the sound, if you can wait for stuff to come up you can do it well cheapo. Just as an example...http://shop.ebay.co.uk/bluebass320/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p4340
