1. Thought about a Bass Collection 5 string ? Never tried a five one myself, but my old 4 string one feels like its made of Balsa Wood, bought it when I had back trouble and compared to my Precision it really is featherweight and not at all neck heavy.
 2.
I've used an antex 25W iron for years and it does most things well though Stevie is right it will struggle to solder the earths onto the back of the pots. I get round this by warming them with a hair dryer if I need to do that job. A 40W iron can be too clumsy at times for working on small components. I'm using Adepto solder from maplins and like Stevie it's an old lead based roll, they last forever. Make sure it's rosin cored
Same here, been using Antex 25W irons Professionally for years. Not often its not enough, but if it is, a fag lighter under the middle of the bit works a treat. 18 or 22 swg multicore 60/40 solder, if you can still get it anyway. Last time I bought it was long long ago.
 3.
Staright talking is the way...not punchy or firey, just straight and conivial.
Absolutely on the nail there. Its early days, why mess about and risk looling a right prat if it backfires.
 4. I think its most likely down to posture when your playing. Specially if your tall and thin like me (well, tall anyway lol ) Worth seeing somebody medical though, could go on for years otherwise.
 5. If theres a headphone socket, you might try using that, with a 1w 100 Ohm resistor across it as a load. Might also be worth trying it fed into a slave amp, or the FX return as this is probaly nearer to a match in terme of signal level. Suck it and see ! as my granny used to say.
 6. If you like it, and are prepared to keep it-have you tried contacting the dealer to see if they'll knock a few quid off as a goodwill gesture ? No harm in asking is there ? I got fifty quid back once cos a cab turned up with a cracked plastic corner trim. Not a lot I know, but it all helps.
 7. Unlesss its omebody you know, even if its a young lad-actually, epecially if its a young kid. no matter what the reason. Tell em to F#ck off. as has been said, if they aint got the gear, they aint ready. Had a bass player in a support band almost obliterate my Hartke 3500 by showing off once. So unless your prepared to jump on stage and unplug him.....
 8.
Yep, spoken to & yes measured it's 4.25mm nearer the G side. When I 'phoned to buy, the guy said is was "factory fresh" not ex-demo or display & he would check it over before it went out the door! The shop seem OK about it & I'm not too unhappy about it, as said it plays very nicely, the neck pocket I can live with, I think it looks worse 'cos it's white against maple, can just get a corner of a business card in at the top of the E side.
Pickguard/Knobs issue makes me wonder if it been taken off to sort out a snag. Been caught out like this myself. Bet you if you ask for another one, they'll say they aint got one ands wont have for weeks. If you get a refund, could you get another at the same price elsewhere ? Long shot, but would they be prepared to pay for it to be checked out by another dealer local to yourself ? Up to you, but unless it plays really well, and you really love it, I'd send it back. You could always contact Fender and see what they have to say.
 9.
Suprisingly not!!! I will take it in to work and weigh it,possibly a few ounces more than a 70s fender I am holding next to it
Mines a good bit heavier than my 91 precision, I'll weigh em both later and see. Could be that being 'japcrap' the wood varies with what was available at the right price at the time I s'pose.
 10.
Jon I have to agree the body quality is in fact very good I had just started preppping it for a refinish when the 71 Fender came along,I dont think the pups are all that but if it goes to a BCer and they let me know I will chuck in a set of pups that will fit that I bought recently for it...everythings there apart from the neck...every last screw.. I also need MONEY as I just bought a 79 Gibson Custom and a Fender Twin reverb and I forgot to consult MrsT.....again..
What wood is it-any idea ? Very heavy thats fer sure !
 11.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...=STRK:MESELX:IT Now that could be sexy
Sure does look a lot like this.. Which is my old 73 Eros. Only one I ever saw with these pups, which aint humbuckers, but they have a lovely deep growl. Bit microphonic, but I filled em with hot wax years ago, and that more or less eliminated it. Often thought they looked more Gibson-ish though, same with the machine heads. Anyone know if there is/was any connection between Eros and MIJ Matsumoko ?
 12.
Hope it went okay... I had to learn about 20+ for last years NYE as I was depping, I had three weeks though... I used a stand. Heh. Tiger balm's great... just don't get any on yer old man!
How would you know....tried it ??? LOL
 13.
40 years?? Wow...good luck to you I'm guessing you're performing today/now? Let us know how it went ^^ Tiger Balm is actually the best invention in the world ever...just a shame it's a pain to get hold of XD
Sorry, not really trying to to hijack here- Loads on ebay, bit spoilt for choice. Which sort do you mean, never heard of it before meself.
 14. The bridge was on the body when I got it, so was the'wear' I had to take bout a 1/4" out of the neck pocket to fit the neck thats on it now, it aint ply, its a sort of dark orange colour timber with a tight grain. I have the original neck, wasnt attached when I got it, its horriible fat and chunky, no brand name, no nail holes, nothing that would help identify it unfortunately. And as I already had the Mighty Mite neck lying around, thats what went on it. I can remember a lot of Jazz and Precision copies from the 70s, but none with the slot. Still got an old Eros, bought new in 73 for £69, still plays well and sounds good. It was a close thing, but I hadnt been playing long and couldnt quite afford the white fender precision in the same shop (£125) Wonder why you only used to see Jazz copies, precision copies were pretty rare back then, was it a copyright issue ? Same reason you saw loads of Tele copies, but not Strat copies ? I think some of the 70s copies were/are well under rated, especially some of the Antoria stuff, but there was always the snob apeal with Fenders. Thanks for looking anyway.
 15.
Enjoy your gig and best of luck. If it's a payer, you can go to the pictures, buy 10 fags, have fish and chips on the way home and STILL have your bus fare just like I remember.
Nah ! GOOD money gigs in 1969 only paid about 10 or 15 Groats for the whole band. Good luck, I had a 16 year break, played for 5 then had another 5 off then started again, so I know how it feels. 42 numbers to learn in under a week ? .....Too much man, as we used to say in 69. lol Enjoy ,
 16.
Hi There are a few JapCrap resident experts on the site, you may want to move the thread to the general bass discussion- for more response-It's a bit buried here. Cheers Neil
Yeah, was a bit dissapointed but just assumed either nobody knows, or nobodys interested. I'd move it if I could work out how. bit new to this.
 17.
A few years back, touring with my Aguilar pre amp, I had a set of spare valves. At the end of the tour, these valves went "missing", presumed lost in transit. A couple of years later, roadie off the tour presented me with this particular set of valves which I don't think where ever the correct ones for the Aguilar and since the Aguilar was sold a few years ago, have been in storage since. I'll shift them at a reasonable price, which I don't know what it should be per valve because I just am not up on the valve price. The 12 au7 seems to go for between £8 to £25. What should I ask? If anyone has use of them and wants to spend £16 (plus postage) for the 4, I'll post them off. Hopefully there wouldn't be any problems with them and I have no way of testing them but if a Basschatter buys them and finds a faulty one, I can sort re-payment per valve. Anyone capable to advise me on the prices, please do.
I stopped repairing amps for a living about 17 years ago. put a lot of old and new valves on ebay last winter and I was amazed at how much they went for, 12AU7 (ECC82) wasnt really a popular audio valve, more common in TV sets, but audiophile Hi Fi freaks from all over the world were even buying old untested second hand ones that I used to buy new for about £2.50. Real anoracks go on about the shapes of the getters and things like that, as if it really makes a difference that they can hear. £12-16 each is about fair I reckon if there new and branded.
 18.
Hi there, Nice bass The bridge is a classic fender type (or copy of) , found on some '57/'62 models, I also have a similar one on my P-bass http://angela.com/vintagebassbridge.aspx Cheers Neil
Thanks for that, thought I'd seen one before. Same with the Machines, but couldnt find a picture of one like it.
 19.
Not having much luck with ebay at the moment, are you! Echo the above. All sounds like you will get your money back. Appalling behaviour from PP though.
Sold a mobile phone to somebody in Moldovia last winter, he had bid without telling me where he was, even though it stated on my advert that he should if he was outside the UK mainland, but I charged him a couple of quid extra for the postage, and I sent it cheapest way I could via Royal mail as agreed with him by ebay mail. After a week he asked for the tracking Number, tbh I couldnt be bothered, so told him I didnt heve one. 2 weeks later he gets ebay to freeze my account, claiming he didnt recieve it. I sent ebay the reciept for the postage, and royaol mail confirmd that it had been delivered, so I sent them a copy of that as well. ebay accepted it, and restored the money to my paypal account. Dont worry, if you have the proof that he got it, they should back you up, it just takes a week or two.
 20. Heres some pics of a 'work in progress' I been putting together on and off for ages. all with bits from ebay. The necks Mighty Mite, which had the fender decal on when it came. the Picups are 10k Kent Armstrongs. Just out of interest, wondering if anyone recognises the Body, the extra screw in the centre of the scratch plate looks original, and the truss rod slot might help. Its very heavy, even heavier I think than my old Eros Jazz, and far far heavier than my Mex Precision. The bridge is unusual, looks like its been made of allthread, but I have a Fender one to fit when I get round to it. The Machine heads are strange as well, but it stays in tune so they can stay. So far so good, not much over seventy quid all in up to now. And it plays really well. As you can see Luthier I aint, but I'm enjoying myself. 21. Just had a quick 'skim' through this thread, interesting. Just a thought, if your using 2 cabs with one head, theres alwys the chance of a dodgy lead, so one cab not working, you wont neccesarily notice with a band playing at full tilt, all the power goint to the one that is working could result in knackered cab. Had it happen to me years ago. so its always worth Checking your leads by pulling em one at a time, and having a good tug at the connections while you listen for anything untoward.
 22. I got a Hartke 3500 4X10 combo. Loud and clean enough for just about anywhere, and fits easy in the boot of a Vectra.
 23.
Here we go, not great pics but all I could get before the camera went on the fritz... <_< - More here - http://s42.photobucket.com/albums/e334/kin...ction%20SB-301/ I can try to get some more in daylight (weather and eqpt permitting) in the next few days if these are no use. *EDIT* Hmm, I think I see a problem..! Having played her for the first time in ages last nite after taking the pics, it appears that at least one of the pots isn't doing anything, and it's the one top right in the pic... Will query further
Thanks for that, Looks like one of the tone pots, is the wire broken off the capacitor ?
 24.
Would a photo of the control cavity of a 301 help..? I'll dig mine out later and see what I can do...
Yep, that would be great. Thanks for taking the time.
 25. Do it, its a paying gig ! Aan as has been said, if you aint playing.... I got nothing against tribute acts, covers bands, whatever. better than kareokes and discos. What about tributes to dead bands/artistes. Dr Feelgood - for example - still gigging, same material, but with no original members, is that a tribute band operating under false pretences all over the world ? What about tributes to bands that only did material written by others, cant think of an example, but you get my drift ? Its all good. I always said I wouldnt do covers and workie clubs when I first started, done both in the end. Wouldnt wanna do workies again though.
