As well as producing it didn't Tony Visconti also play Bass on "the man who sold the world" - I've always love that album especially the fuzz bass on "she shook me cold". I must dig the CD out and give it listen tonight.
Agreed. I've always thought it was VERY apparent that album was produced by the person who played bass on it!!

Are the USA fenders worth the money? The good ones (of which there are relatively few) are and the bad ones (of which there are many) aren't. Never played a single "bad" Japanese Fender though.

Murph eh? Maybe Eric is "pursuing other business interests".

Updated today with a couple of "return matches" at York Acorns ARLFC in 2009.

Look out for Eric Harvey while you're there (he probably booked you?) He's a cheeky little chappie!!
Tony Williams was only 19 on that record, wasn't he?
He was indeed - terrifying isn't it? Puts the Arctic Monkeys and their ilk in perspective.

For me, it would have to be "My Funny Valentine" which is a double live album. Recorded at the Lincoln Centre, New York on 12th February 1964, it features: Miles Davis on Trumpet. Ron Carter on Bass Tony Williams on Drums Herbie Hancock on Piano (23 yrs old at the time!!) George Coleman on Tenor Sax. The story goes that the band found out only a few minutes before the gig that they would not be getting paid for their performance and this may go some way to explain the slight "edge" in some of the playing. LOL
I remember... you wanted to sell me that SB450! Glad you didnt now then?
Yes indeedy - although, if I'm honest, it still resides in it's case in the spare room and very rarely sees the light of day, which is sacrilege really. I guess it's just a "sentimental" thing because I've owned it so long?
me too, i might help put the PA speakers up but generally i stay well away from all the knob twiddling, and i like watching the guitarist do it while getting more wound up, makes me chuckle.
Oh yes! Do you think this makes us bad people? -
Makes you believe in fate, doesn't it! I seem to move on new-ish basses, can't seem to bring myself to with the old ones.
Absolutely!!
Why is bass players always seem to be the ones that set the PA up first and all our stuff last? I do own the PA but it doesn't mean I want to set it up solo thanks!
I'm deeply ashamed to admit that I have, for many years, adopted a stance of total ignorance on all PA/Monitor related matters for that very reason. Works too -
Much embarrassment on bandmates faces when I confided that I'd been doing this, especially as the singer had been giving me instructions on 'less mid and a bit more top (etc.)' and I'd been tweaking the desk (whilst trying not to burst out in tears) and he's responding 'Yep that's perfect' The upside was that the monitors got ditched
Brilliant!! You are the Messiah!! -
I got a cob on with my band once as I was expected to set my gear up and then set up the whole PA inc monitors... to cut a long story short. This particular gig I was late arriving and nothing was unpacked etc so I rushed about setting up PA and thought 'scr*w this' and I didn't plug in the monitors I just left cables trailing to them and I moved the FOH speaker stands back a bit so the singer was getting a bit from them. Needless to say nobody commented on the monitor sound and just because I can be like that sometimes I proceeded to do the same at the next bunch of gigs; guess what? Not once did anyone comment on monitors!
You must be a VERY scary man to induce such terror in your bandmates. More power to you. -
So will you just be taking one cab next time...
In all honesty, that did cross my mind. Probably not though -
What's the story there then?
I have an early 70's Gibson bass - well gigged and considerably upgraded over the 30 years + I've owned it - which I decided to advertise for sale here last year. Mercifully, there was little or no interest in it at all. With the benefit of hindsight, I'd have been mortified if I actually had sold it.

I did an open air show on Saturday with my usual Superfly rig (Head+2x8+1x15). Great onstage and FOH sound (I DI to the desk via a SABDDI). It wasn't until I came to strip down my rig that I realised that I had only actually connected the 2x8 cab and hence was only utilising 250 of the available 500 watts. - what a PILLOCK!! On the other hand, I did play the entire 2 hours+ show through a cab about the size of the average boombox Pretty impressive eh?
Take it. With a more authentic cherry red refinishing job, it's easily worth more than that. The fact of the matter is that people go nuts for vintage instruments. Just make sure the serial number doesn't get damaged in the refin. Grr, these are the kind of deals I dream about! Where's my 1961 Gibson for £100?!?
The sad fact is that people do, indeed, go nuts for vintage instruments - until you try and sell one of course, as I know from bitter experience.
Sorry Bassicinstinct I didn’t mean to be personal and was not referring to you, when I read my post back. I can now see that it sounded patronizing. I was actually trying referring to people I have known and have worked with in the past. I can understand the neighbours complaining even if it is one night a year if the volume is excusive. I try to look at things from all sides I personally think it is the hotels duty to inform the booker that the venue is not suitable for live bands, If the booker insists on a live band then the venue has every right to insist on volume restrictions. When the band turns up who are informed of the restrictions, it is fair to say that the band are expected to accommodate the hotels wishes on volume. But if it turns out that it is imposable for the band to play then the fee should be met in full. This all should be agreed beforehand. The problem lies when hotels or bands just take the booking and pocket the money without any regards for the bookers wishers. PS you will always get dickheads in charge of venues making life harder then needs be.
Understood amd agreed.

coasterbass: Point taken although, unless the happy couple divorce and remarry the prospect of getting any work as a result of the experience would seem to be slim, assuming that you'd not be falling over yourselves to do a gig at the behest of the hotel itself. Maybe the "self respect"cooment was a little harsh. No offence meant. ironside1966: Thanks for pointing out what "being a professional" is all about. I've only been doing it to one degree or another for 40 years, so what do I know eh?
