1.
Are they planning any rehearsals or is it just turn up on the night and wing it? Must be loads of spare bass players in Cardiff surely?
Like me all their normal deppers are playing or away for holidays, aparently. Anyway PM me and I'll put you in touch.
  2. Love Sir Horace's stuff... Amongst the many bass players that I learned from, copied and ripped off there was one who is little known. In the 60's John Mayall did two albums with a "light" band, Acoustic guitar, sax/flute, Mayall and bass. They are called "Empty Rooms" (studio) and "The Turning Point" (live) The Bass player was Steve Thompson and I've never heard anything by him since but I played the two albums constantly ever since. Here's "California" from The Turning Point.
  3.
Here's my quickie, rushing through transcription, originally that's a synth bassline, and it's just wicked.. I'll bring you more of stuff like this.. You wouldn't believe, how much wicked pop/synth bass stuff is out there..
Nice one. Nice wifebeater too
  4. Saw that but assumed it was a Photoshoped picture ..
  5.
Technically this is also a plywood bass
"Laminate" when selling, "Plywood" when buying...
  6.
Corian has always appealed to me as a material that could be good for bodies. Inert, Oil and Acid resistant, won't stain, no expansion or contraction. Bit heavy but a nice bit of milling could reduce that. Colours
I have a Corian/brass laminated nut on my Shuker .. Sounds great .. I'd not like a whole bass made from it though
  7.
I bought this. It arrived the other day beautifully packaged. This bass is exacly what Si said it was. It's a very "together" instrument..... feels just lovely. Plays and sounds like a good P should, with that added "something" that you don't get with a new instument. Gigged with it last night and even though it was bought as a back up, I can see it getting some serious action! Very light too, which is is important when your playing a 2.5 hour set! I'm chuffed. Thanks Si!
A touch of Sudocrem should sort out that chuffin', Jesso. Glad you like the ol' girl. I have a feeling that one will just get better with age .... Thanks mate. OG
  8.
im suprised there has been no interest in this..have a BUMP OG!!
Yes so am I .. I think it's a bit too close to summer holidays for bass GAS in general
  9. If it's a pub audience then they would probably have heard Superstition go into Play that funky muzak about 500 times...
  10.
Anyone else noticed the bass was readvertised yesterday on gumtree even though the advert is still running on ebay?
That's OK as long as the ebay auctions says "also advertised elewhere so may end early" Edit: Ah just re-read the ebay link and it's a Jim Fullacarp description .... I'd only tust him if I could actually go to his place to get it and have a good look first.
  11. Ooooh! exciting
  12. Having lived through the rise and fall of the Beatles and played bass through most of that time too, I was literally gobsmacked and jaw dropped when the remastered versions on digital media started coming out. Played on fine equipment I heard the bassline properly for the first time and was amazed at what I'd missed before. He was doing that stuff before many people and, although contemporaneous with James Jamerson, in my mind he has a lighter and more lyrical touch. He also had control of what he played to a greater extent. Jamerson didn't write the songs and so had a melody and chord chart to work from for ideas, Macca often had to come up with all of it. As has been noted already Penny Lane and Something alone would put him in the upper echelons of 60's bass players. And Come together (mashes nicely with Footprints which I suspect is where the bassline came from... ) Yup, He's not underrated here...
  13.
I regularly play 'Gimme some Loving', 'I Wish', 'Superstition','Hard to Handle','Knock on Wood' and 'Sex Machine'.I play 'Do I Do' a lot aswell. I also play 'Funk Music' but that's with a different band
Ha ha yep. That's a conversation I have a lot
  14. Thought some of those are in the "Compulsory Figures" for pub funk bands Youtube will turn up versions of all of those played by various people. You probably need to concentrate on the versions they have listed though as some vary a lot. Here's a few I like Too 'ard to 'andle Quite like the Grateful Dead's little kick in the chord figure.. Stevie Ray Vaughn's version of Superstition is a pub rock standard but Stevland's on Sesame Street is good and the bass is on a bass and not a keyboard ... Better bass line than on the record too but you may find raised eyebrows in the band if they want the very simple orginal version. If you are lucky your lot will play it in E rather than Eb The Jackons do a good version of It's your thing, if a tad slow for live. I play that in my funk band (but on baritone sax) If you have any say in it I'd say keep it as short as you can. Civilians loose the plot pretty fast on semi-obscure funk tunes with no obvious chord progressions and no words, unless the whole room is really bopping.... They are all great fun to play on bass and, of course, you are the Main Man in keeping those backsides moving ...
  15. "The bass has a replacement value of £3000 (that is, it is around what you would pay to have a bass hand-built to this standard)," Never heard of Jon Shuker then
  16. Her videos (not live, mind) show a guy with a light blue Spector (?) with frets but the bass lines all sound 'orrible
  17. It was certainly one of the tunes in an ancient thread about bass lines that were played on a keyboard rather than a bass...
  18. The full gallery is just a PM away This is a non-export 2005 JB62RI Crafted in Japan CIJ Fender Jazz bass, 1962 Re-issue in "US Gunmetal Blue" with a black scratchplate and rosewood fingerboard. Basswood body, Japanese pickups and hardware. 3 knobs, earth strap and headstock strap peg in the style of the later 62 Jazz. 19.
Not impressed. He's missed out the beat! Where's the drums!? Although not sure what else is left to use... apart from, well, that...
Not such a clever dick then... in your opnion Sarah?
  20.
Jon tells me the white EMG P5 pickup has arrived at last I'm fixing up a trip to Shukerville in about a week's time to bring my new baby home. I hope everything will be all white!
With East P preamp?
  21.
Here's a video which illustrates the contrast between a 'VI, and a P: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ihk4Jp5yO4g
The Fender VI is definitely a "Crazy Guitar"
  22.
Give a guitarist, any guitarist, a bass guitar, and he can play Mustang Sally in five minutes. Give a guitarist a proper bass and... it wouldn't be pretty. It's a guitar.
Actually, having struggled for at least 4 years now to play EUB reasonably, give many bass guitarists a double bass to play Mustang Sally on and it would still be fairly ugly ....
