Really? I'd say the 'problem' (if you can call it that) I have with my BB414 is that the pickups are very hot and quite barky. I have to tame it down tone-wise a little to control it In general I'd say the BB414 is probably one of the better made, cheaper basses. Squiers are okay if you get a good one but the fit and finish of the BB414 is waaaaay ahead of them IMHO.
+1 BB414 pickups are very hot, I have flats on mine and i get a lovely warm (but precise) punch with tone rolled off and a real hot crisp stab with tones all the way on. Its my go to bass for most things I need to play. I got to be honest once (a long time ago in a galaxy far far away ) I was drawn away from my BB414 to the VM and CV Squires but after trying one they were great basses.... but imo they still couldn't compete with my Yammies.
What's the difference of Yamaha TRB1005 or TRB 5II? Well, another thing: I use 4 strings, and I dont need 5 strings for now, but in the future, who knows... When I tryed the Yamaha TRB1005, the 5 string was perfect, but I don't use it very much, but it doesn't bother me very much... Maybe it would be better the 5 string version?
Basically the TRB 5II was the model made before the TRB1005, the TRB 5II are considered slightly better due to their pickups having a slight more depth to them. Also the TRB 5II (along with the 4II and 6II) were made in Japan where the TRB1005 (and 1004, 1006) are made in China I believe. To be honestly apart from a slight cosmetic change they are both excellent basses, both active both build like tanks and you should be able to get them both second hand for around the same price. A TRB 5II in very good condition should cost around 400 to 450 Euros where a TRB1005 might cost you up to around 500 Euros. I would go for the 5 string versions because they are much easier to find than the 4 string versions and plus you will get used to having that B string there and you will start to use it, didnt take me long to get used to it anyway lol EDIT: My bad the TRB1004/5/6 are made in China not Korea
-
I would go for the Yamaha either a TRB1005 or a TRB 5II (the older models) all Yamaha basses are built like tanks and the TRB series are some of the best basses made. If i had to choose it would be the Yamaha every time.
It's between this and the Sq VM Jag so far... I wonder if there's any difference in build quality
All Yamaha instruments are built like tanks there is no compromise in any of their build quality, Squire's are also very well made but on balance I would say Yamaha are the better made. -
I'd go for a Yamaha BB414, tonally versatile (as it has P and J pickups) and very good quality - new price around £270. 2nd hand £200 no trouble (have seen them go for £150). EDIT: One on the forum right now for £190: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=124074
+1 The BB414 is my go to bass for most things, great build quality and you can play anything on it. Second hand anywhere between £150 to £190 is about normal which is a steal coz these basses really are a kepper. -
Delt with John about a P Bass wiring kit, great guy extremely helpful and very quick to respond, received the kit the day after saying he will post it. Will be using him again for more kits!
I don't really miss playing the extra frets but I find it a bit disorientating going between Fender and 2 octave necks, I sometimes slide to the wrong fret at the dusty end if I don't concentrate.
+1
Thinking about getting a new bass, really like the look of a yamaha bb 5 string or a fender 5 string of some kind. Only thing is that I have always had 24-frets, does anyone going from 24 to 20/21 miss the extra high notes? I know its not the most used part of the neck, but I like having it there when i need it. Any thoughts?
Iv got a mix of 24 and 21 fret basses and i found i dont really go past the 20th fret very often on any of them but i know what you mean it is nice to have the extra 3 or 4 frets just incase. Saying that i do slightly prefer 21 frets since the spacing is slightly wider, the frets dont seem so bunched together up top so for me its easier to move around. Its all down to preference maybe you should try a few 21 fretters and see if you get along with them. You wont know untill you try.

Update: I spoke to G4M Monday and played the "i was almost hit by a flying bridge" card to which they said they are very sorry and they will send out a new tail piece wire and new set of strings. Today (being Tuesday) both items arrived so i was impressed by their speedy service. They have given me a Wittner tail piece wire and some of their own make of strings (i have had problems with these in the past where the G string snaps when you try to tune it) so i will give them a chance but if they break again i will be back on to them and i will get a good quality set of strings. On top of everything have a friend who happens to be a very experienced DB player and she said she will help me sort it out and set it up for me. So at the moment everything is looking up!
You'd probably get a better response if you posted this in the 'Items Wanted' Section.
Very true lol dono why i didnt think to do so =P -
I recently sold a Vintage V4 'Reissued' P-bass which had Wilkinson hardware and pickup. I changed the pots/wiring for 250k CTS and used a .047 orange drop capacitor, changed the pickup to a Seymour Duncan SPB-1 and strung it with Fender flats. When it came to selling, I put the Wilkinson pickup back in there and if I'm honest, I struggled to tell much of a difference between the two - the SD had a bit of extra clarity, if I recall. Might have been a different story with roundwound strings, however. Given the Wilkinson P-pickup only costs around £15 on eBay, it's got to be worth investigating - you wouldn't be much out of pocket if you found it lacking. Bear in mind, that it's been wound to a 'vintage' spec and thus isn't a high-gain pickup. Other reasonably-priced P-pickups I've used in previous builds were the Wizard Trad and the Seymour Duncan SPB-3 'Quarter Pounder'. The Wizard Trad's a great pickup for a vintage P-sound and the SPB-3 is a bit of a monster - higher output and a more modern sound.
Yeh iv had a look at the Wizard Trads they seem pretty cool do you know what the Thumpers are like? and are they passive?
what is budget? theres a few folk selling a bit nicer than budget but with all the wiring and pots and stuff for about £50 in the for sale section
For me £50 is about the limit i want to spend on just pick ups.
That's tough one to answer. How much soldering experience have you got? I taught myself how to do it when I was about 12... that was over 30 years ago now so I kind of take it for granted. Best thing I can say just now is have a look at the components you need (2 pots, a jack socket, a capacitor and some wire) find out where to buy them and go for it. The beauty of soldering is that it is always reversible so if you mess it up just desolder it and start again.
Thanks for the advice =] iv had extremely little soldering experience when i was about 12 which was 8 years ago i havnt touched it since but i guess now is a better time than any to start lol. Can i get a diagram anywhere? once iv seen a diagram and had a go ill be find for next time.
The P bass loom is the easiest wiring job on the planet. Maybe now is the time to learn a new skill? You can put together the entire kit for a fraction of the price of a pre-made loom. Only go for one if you are temped by the claims of "better sounding" parts... which of course they don't deliver.
Lol yeh was thinking about it i have no idea where to start though lol any tips?
