1.
Artec.
Do you have a website for them? I cant seem to find any pick ups by them.
2. As the title states what is the best budget P style pick up? I hear good things about Wilkinson but I want to get the opinions of you all first.
3. You can pick up a Yamaha BB 414 second hand for under £200 they are great basses and they cover any style they will want to play. As mentioned before Ibanez and Peavey are decent choices too.
4. Yeh luckly i was able to get in touch with a friend who knows alot about DB's and she said she will sort it out for me. I dont trust G4M when it comes to their strings instruments from now on ill seek out a Luthier.
5. Thanks for all the advice guys iv sanded off the gloss and im going to give it a go i guess if all fails i can always get the sandpaper out and start again!
6. Well to be fair I thought it died at first =P And yeh im seeing what i can do to make it better hopefully these upgrades will work.
7. My BB 414 in one hand and my TRB 5II in the other this is why god gave us 2 hands for these reasons. But if I lost an arm then my BB 414 would be the first to get picked up.
8.
I've never even looked at a Yamaha bass before but the BB 414 looks very good value for money. Cheaper even than a CV Squier. I'm going to look In to these a bit more.
They are well worth a look and plus they are one of the sexiest looking basses if you get it in metallic orange! As you might of noticed (due to my signature) I am a bit biased to Yamaha's, but thats only because they have one of the best build qualities and they make some of the best basses you can get.
9.
Buy it a few drinks and play some sexy music? Failing that, a bit of sandpaper will be enough to rough up the finish well enough to make the next layer of paint take. What colours are you going from and to?
Lol first option sounds the easiest =P At the moment its black and it how much "roughening" up will it need? because the coating seems pretty tough and quite thick. Well Im planning going from black to some bright colour like an electric blue or a neon green or something like that.
10.
Or a Yamaha BB414... or, if you like the reliced look, an LTD Vintage-204...
+1 for the Yammy The BB414 are excellent basses that have Yamaha's typical high end build quality and the P/J pickups are very smooth, hot and punchy and really gives that bluesy sound when strung with flatwounds. You can pick them up on here for under £200 easy, for me I wouldn't use anything else with a P/J config.
11. Right iv decided to give it ago myself! This is a big plunge since iv never tried anything remotely like this before =P One question I got though.... Whats the best way to strip a bass?
12. Thats dam amazing I am very jealous!
13. Yeh I know what you mean thanks for the tip for me I think steels are the way to go.
14. Thanks man thats a great website and i am fancying a set of Corelli 370's now. Yeh at the time I never thought about getting second hand and I was on a tight budget so I thought I would go for a budget upright, im not sure if I have shot myself in the foot now so I just hope that the repair, new string and a set up will bring it up to an ok standard.
15.
1. if the tailpiece wire was solid core steel then they are liable to snapping - the advantage of stranded steel wire is that you can tell if it's on the way out. I was advised to change by a luthier for just this reason. cost about a tenner. 2. yes, definitely! 3. yes, definitely! you should notice quite a big difference - really worth a try and you shouldn't be looking at much more than about £50 or so....
Just had a look and it was a stranded steel wire. Thats cool I will have a look at getting it setup properly, only thing is I also now need a set of new strings have you or anyone got any suggestions for a decent but not too pricey set?
16. I dont think I need a new tailpiece. And the tailpiece wire was a stainless steel wire already and it still snapped. Would it be worth taking it to a luthier and spending a bit more money getting it repaired with a better quality wire and set up properly? (I havnt had the bass set up before) Would it make much of a difference if I got it setup?
17. Thanks for that at least I know what strings I can get (when iv got my bass fixed).
18. Thanks for the advice Monday morning im going to be back on to them and see what I can do. Thanks again.
19.
Well we'd better give them some publicity!
Sounds like a plan lol. Now I just got to find out how much its gona cost for a set of new strings and to get the sound post reset.
20. Gear 4 Music thats who I bought it from.
21. Its a week out of its warranty and they basically said to me tough luck its your problem now. And thanks I will check it out now.
22.
Is it just the tailpiece cable that's snapped, or is there other damage? If it's just the cable, that should be an easy and cheap repair. As long as the soundpost is still in place, you may not even need to visit a luthier.
The sound post has moved with closer inspection. Is it worth spending the money on? coz I do have a fear that i will spend money on getting it sorted and something else going wrong with it like you know?
23. As promised here is the damage report.
24. Literally happened 20 mins ago I was playing finger style on my DB when I heard a huge crack and the bridge flew across my room where I found out the tail piece have ripped off the bottom of the bass. the strings are now also ruined and since I only payed £445 for it i dont think its even worth repairing. To be honest im not sure what to do can anyone help? Pictures to follow...
25. I been looking at some new Double Bass strings and iv noticed there are loads of different types but what is the different between Orchestral, Jazz, Hybrids, Slap/ Rock-A-Billy and Solo strings? Could someone explain them to me please? Thanks.
