The Wood Brothers - wonderful recorded DB sound
benbastin replied to Clarky's topic in EUB and Double Bass
I don't use any preamp. I either run the mic straight to house, and where possible I don't have an amp on stage. Or I'll have a mackie SRM150 with the DPA and my realist, then out into a GKMB150. But I prefer when I can to just run the mic, because it's mega. I prefer to hear my bass acoustically. If you have something that will give phantom power the DPA would be fine to use into an amp, unless your playing very very loud you won't have feedback issues. -

He's also the bass player in this band. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I9otVOpKYLw It looks like int he video he's using a small clip n mic. I've been using a DPA 4099 for a few weeks now and its the best sound i've ever gotten. -
I should have said that this definitely something that can vary, and there's a personal preference thing there as well. Some people prefer their sound quieter and then beef it up through the amp. Some people have a quiet bass. But within these parameters, there are a lot of ways to increase your acoustic volume without sacrificing tone, and for me 9 times out of 10 this translate very well to an amplified sound. Also a point worth saying in this topic (which I'm sure no one does but just in case ) I think that you should always practice acoustically. Work on the sound of you and your bass, there are obviously time where you need to fire up the amp, dial in your eq etc. But for the real practice, you want to hear exactly the sound you are making from the bass. Anyways, I'll get down from my high horse right now.

I used to have lots of problems with fatigue in gigs. and volume can often be a cause of this. I but think that working on the acoustic volume of the bass is important. Unless we're talking very very cheap basses a good amount of acoustic volume is always workable from an instrument. I found once I was able to have a loud acoustic sound, I had a lot less problems hearing myself in gigs (this is obviously negated when everything is at 11) In most situations things should be as loud as the loudest un-amplified instrument. But don't be afraid to ask people to turn it down a bit if its getting tough. Also a word on set up, I found every time i got my bass back from the shop it was easier to play then after few months it was harder again. I realised that the bridge pulls upwards a bit, causing higher action and higher string tension. This happens naturally due to the way we play, but if once a month or so check that the bridge is seated correctly. Don't be afraid to move it gently yourself. If your confident you can do this under tension, or loosen the strings a little bit then do it. This will make a big difference. Or at least it did for me. But when ever possible try to give your bass volume before amping it. Hope it makes sense. Ben

positions, keys and chords - how to think
benbastin replied to fatback's topic in EUB and Double Bass
The Way I see these fingering methods is a system of discovering the neck. In simandle you will be guided through positions up the neck then exercises that link these positions. So the difference with electric bass being that you don't have to remember exactly where the notes are as you have frets, lines or dots to help you. With double bass you need to develop a system to find all the notes, then expand to be able to play what ever notes you want to and to jump around from position to position. But knowing how far to jump, how big your hand must be, what other notes you have around you. I see how it may look strange, but its almost a step before that of scales and more linear playing. It all pays off. I remember how long I spent playing only in half position, and being so scared when a Db came up in a chord chart. But slowly the whole bass opens up to you, and no note is harder to play than another one. I hope this ramble makes sense. -

Two D&G sets of Gut strings for sale. !st Set was new old stock. So sitting unused in someones draw for some time. I've used them for couple of gigs. In good condition, sound like you'd expect guts to sound. £15 posted. 2nd Set i got brand new and was on my bass for 2 days. Got them to see if newer guts were what i was looking for. Turns out its not. Brighter and slightly stiffer than the older ones. Again good condition. £20 Posted Can do pictures if you need. The older set are a bit darker than the newer ones. To be clear this is only the D and G string in both cases. Thanks Ben
