It begins

For me no Musician is indispensable. If the music is original then we don’t miss what we don’t know. If it’s a different arrangement of a popular song/ composition then we sometimes question what we are used to.The bigger question for me is do we need actual musicians.With all the tech/computers samplers etc. From a lot of the comments I used to hear from the younger people I worked with as long as the music sounded good to them whoever made it and with what became a mute point. From a performance prospective as long as there are flashing lights smoke and a rhythm then jobs done. I know this doesn’t necessarily apply to all types of music but missing a certain Musician from alive performance to a large part of an audience is secondary as long as the main attraction the people come to see is there.I know I am about to get Ba rated but here goes. I play in a trio. Bass ,guitar, lead vocalist. We play to backing tracks with drums and whatever is missing from the song minus harmonies.We generally get a great reception from wherever we play. Other than musicians no one ever questions where the rest of the music comes from they just enjoy what we do.Bass players miss bass players the majority of the non playing public don’t care.

Update. Ordered diaphragm from real electronics. Great service arrived next day unfortunately correct packaging containing incorrect diaphragm which turns out not to be in stock and needs to come from Italy. I wanted to repair the driver before dropping the amp in to a tech to try and find the issue with the noise and irregular pulsing of the power lied light on the amp. Oh well goes in tomorrow why do I fear the £ signs are going to be racking up….oh yes because it’s a Markbass.

Just thought I would give a shout out to Real Electronics Sheffield .Got a blown horn in Markbass CMD 121H spoke to Ellen who answered the phone ,explained what had happened. She spoke to tech who advised it was probably just the diaphragm. Ordered last night. Arrived 11.30 this morning. Cost of diaphragm. £10 plus postage. Just had the horn out(whooo) no meter reading so looks like it’s gone. Connections are fine. Hope your correct that the duff horn is interfering with the power. The noise is reminds me of when valve seats used to play up on old amps but not as noisy and getting full power from the amp into the 12 inch.

Hope someone can help. Got a CMD 121 h with what looks like a blown horn. Also the power light led flickers irregular pulses which can be heard through the speaker ( not loud but it’s there) anyone had same issues or have idea of cost to repair. Thanks

The smiles on there faces was worth the tv crap that goes with it . I’m not going to begrudge a couple of songs worth of time for a few people to achieve a life long ambition. Life is just to short.

Interesting, doing my best to understand more of the tech side and how it all works. Just getting a bit long in the tooth I suppose doesn’t seem to go in as well as it did.😂

Feel free to shoot this down. Within the last 12 months I changed to FrFr set up used mostly as a back line. I know this goes against the general consensus for bass but it appears to work very well. I have always received great feedback on my sound regardless of equipment used. I put this down to frequencies used more than equipment or technique. But since adopting the new set up I get great feedback on my bass sound. I couldn’t understand. After trying to figure out why this was happening considering I have been lucky enough to have owned some seriously expensive stuff over the years but other musicians and drummers are telling me this new set up sounds great. For me all I was using was a couple of Pa speakers ( Headrush 112 ) Line 6 pod go and. Couple of 5 string Ibanez bass’s SRSC & srffr. Not the cheapest but no where near a boutique set up. The only thing that made sense was that although the cabs did not go as low frequency wise as traditional bass cabs the frequency they did propel was hitting quite hard and prominently establishing its place in the mix I’m sure side by side other bass cabs differences would be obvious but this is true of all set ups and only relevant in those circumstances. Please give me your views I am intrigued in this real world outcome a situation which was not quite what I expected when I switched from a traditional set up to FrFr.

Get the most from every gig as the opportunities are shrinking to do what we all appear to enjoy so much.

Personally I love em. We you use a click in a live situation and have done for years now.I would probably say compared to a lot of people on this site my skill level is probably quite mediocre. The one thing I do well is lock stuff down . I find click keeps us tight but admit leaves little room for flannel which hand on heart suits me.It’s been a while since I played live without backing tracks but did join in on a jam the other week. We played a few well know tracks everyone could let go on. The first thing that struck me was even with different drummers how loose and sloppy the music sounded,but in fairness it was only a jam.

I have spent time and money replacing pickups(under licence Bart’s) and factory installed preamp to. USA Bart’s and East preamp. Is it better than stock without a doubt. But here’s the thing I have another bass same spec under license Bart’s with factory pre amp that sounds just as good. Only real difference except shape is pick-up placement. To be honest we tend to do all these changes to satisfy an itch we get from time to time. IMHO in a live situation for a lot of us playing pubs and clubs all the nuances we strive for get lost in the mix especially if most of the sound is coming from a back line. Not to mention the guitarists trying to be heard above everything regardless of composition or a keyboard players left hand playing notes lower than a snakes kneecaps.. I’ve reconciled myself that if I play the correct notes and the audience and myself can here then in the right place jobs done.

This for me is a fascinating discussion. I over come the performance angst later in life but enjoy the tingle of anticipation before a gig to this day .Conversely I never got over the feeling of inadequacy and nervousness when doing a location photoshoot in my 30 yrs as professional company/ commercial photographer. The thought of heading down to London which was a regular occurrence to do a shoot filled me with dread. Through out my work life I received many complements from some incredibly well known brands that had employed some of the worlds leading names in photography to represent them.Still I lacked self belief. In hind sight I know I was pretty good at what I did and proud of my contribution.On retirement I was asked by our marketing team how I would describe my time at work. My answer was “can’t believe I got away with it all these years”.Which on reflection was sad. Living and enjoying the moment is difficult to master some times. But reflection can be a nice conciliation. The most important thing though is to just do what you love whilst you can, not to try will be a the biggest regret in later life. Remember life is not a practise run.

Well I am feeling far happier to hear it’s not just me. Did think I was letting the side down a bit. I suppose as Ped says as long as we all enjoy what we do the reason is immaterial.Appreciate the input folks.

Before I start could I say the following is probably down to my inability to multitask. Something I have noticed over the years when listening to music and even reviewing some of my previous favourite bands is. I now appear to be picking not only the bass lines to hum to but dissecting the whole composition and doing the same at the detriment of the lyrics. On reflection I realised that this is something I have always done and only really learnt backing harmony lyrics as required. Occasionally the main lyrics stick but for me become secondary.It’s like everything is musical but the lyrical content washes over me,even when I make an effort to listen to them . When I was very young and was learning to playI worked in a record shop and used to be able to help parents that we’re trying to buy records for there kids based on a single line of the lyric scribbled on a bit of paper but didn’t know what the record was called. That ability to put the vocal first diminished as I concentrated more on learning to play.Anyone else have this problem. Apologies to all the great lyricist’s out there.Please be gentle concerning my inadequacies.
