I thought it'd be an easier way to keep track of any new music produced by people here. And thanks to Steve and co for giving it the go-ahead. It would be great if we could also embed SoundCloud tracks on forum posts, but I'm not technically-minded enough to know how! I did try using the SoundCloud code myself as a test, but it didn't work. I'll ask around some of the technical folk at work here, but if anyone else has any advice on this then please let us know... In the meantime, spread the word!

Great idea! I hope this isn't treading on any toes, but I've taken the liberty of setting up a 'Basschat' group on SoundCloud, so those of us here who use the site can share music amongst ourselves more easily. If any of the Mods here would rather I remove this group and set up one of their own that's obviously no problem at all - just let me know and I'll remove it. Alternatively I'd be happy to add any of the BC team as official moderators of the group, giving them full control over it. I haven't added an image or the BC logo to the group as yet - as I felt this might be overstepping the mark - but if the folks here are happy for me to do so then that's very easily done. I'd agree with Dave Ellefson (Megadeth) and Rob Wight (NoMeansNo) as already mentioned. I'd also add Aston "Family Man" Barrett (Wailers/Upsetters) and Horace Panter (The Specials). Neither of which are the most "flashy" players, but both form the backbone of the bands they play in.

Difficult question this one! Off the top of my head I'd probably plump for Hi Ho Silver Lining (Jeff Beck) or Ellens Dritter Gesang/Ave Maria... depending on my mood on the day ;-)

Gets a doff of my cap, albeit a day late... Cliff was one of the reasons I took up bass and later went off kilter exploring the work of Bach and others. Regardless of what people think about his playing, he was a hugely influential bassist and highly creative at a time when the vast majority of metal bass players were content to just chug along in the background. R.I.P. indeed.

Surely the bottom line here is that the landlord/lady is the one writing the paycheck, so for the duration of the gig he/she is both the customer and the "boss". And ultimately, the customer is always right. Even when you know they're wrong. That's the 'Great Compromise' that governs all business-customer relationships. If you believe otherwise, then dare I say you either have an inflated ego, a bad business sense or a sufficient fanbase/number of bookings not to care. But regardless, the customer is always "right", because they are the one paying for the service.

Nothing is more likely to make me leave a pub than some band coming on stage, cranking it up to "11" and fantasising that they're headlining at Donnington, or wherever. That's the big difference with pub gigs, in my opinion. If I go to a club, or a dedicated gig venue, then I expect the music to be loud: that's part of the attraction. But pubs and bars play a different, more social role - at least for me - and it's important for people to be able to hear themselves speak over the music. Of course there are exceptions to this, but if it's a paid gig in a pub then the landlord has every right to tell the band to tweak the volume down. It's just a shame there isn't a similar dial for tweaking guitarists' egos!

Thanks again for all your input on this - greatly appreciated folks! I didn't have as much time to work on it last night as I'd hoped (the newly arrived Skol Jnr was kicking up a stink - quite literally!). But I did make some tweaks based on your feedback, which I think has improved the track slightly in the limited time I had available. With more time I could have gone to town on it... but then I guess a mix is never finished and always abandoned, as they say! Wow! That is a fantastic sound you have there... I'm amazed that you did it with no overdubs, etc. Really impressive stuff. I need to get my head around creating this sort of music in a live environment, but I need to invest in some more kit before I do so (an excuse for GAS if ever there was one!). Let me know if you're ever gigging in or around Manchester, as I'm guessing you guys are **** hot live.

^ Cheers 51m0n, thanks for your comments (as always!). Gives me some confidence to know that you and 'Airsoft think it's not too shabby... That's a really good point about varying the mood of the track and making it "grow" - I'll have a go at adding more variation to it tonight. Will also have a play with the drums too - must admit I haven't revisited the drum samples since I loaded them originally (other than some EQ/compression), so I might audition some other sounds and see how they fit. Just a quick question: did the overall mix sound ok on your system - particularly the sub bass? I'm working with 'phones only at the moment, so it's very much a case of trial and error! (with emphasis on the error...). Thanks again mate.

Really impressive... Folks, I've decided to enter a competition to remix a pop song by a US-based artist called NNXT. It's nothing serious; there are no big prizes involved and most of the entries to date are from amateurs like me. I'm just giving it a go to get some remixing experience and to have a bit of fun! Anyway, I'm due to submit my entry into the competition [b]tonight (!)[/b] around midnight. The trouble is, I've had to mix the entire track using headphones only - long story - so I currently have no idea how it's going to sound through a set of speakers, be they monitors or otherwise. So... if any of you have chance, I'd be really grateful if you could give it a quick listen and reply here with any feedback. I'm particularly keen for comments on the mix, but any thoughts on the track itself are very welcome too. And please don't pull any punches here! If you think it's a pile of poop, please say so... I'm not posting here for the sake of vanity and I really do value your input on how I might improve it.
