There is a really wide range of styles in the Basschat group already...
You're not wrong! We've got a very eclectic range of music so far... I'm really enjoying listening to it all. Keep 'em coming folks and if you have a SoundCloud account then don't be shy - "Join us! Join ussss!!" The Broken Door & Our Helical Mind - Sept 30th, Bolton
Skol303 replied to pantherairsoft's topic in Gigs
Dammit... really annoyed I missed this gig. It looked/sounds great! Glad it went well for for y'all and let us know next time you're playing anywhere around Manchester (so I can get a babysitter sorted in time!). -
Just want to say thanks to Skol for setting this up. Decent audio hosting sites aren't as easy to find as they once were and its something Facebook seems to have missed.
^ No probs! It was easy-peasy to set up and I'm just glad to help folks here share some of their music. We've already got a very broad mix of contributions, which is great
I've only used Soundcloud for a few months now but I think it's pretty good and has ample opportunity for us to get into each other's sounds. With there being a free version too there's no excuse to share what you've been working on!
^ Yeah I agree. It's free, it's easy to use and it doesn't come plastered in adverts and all the usual BS. I personally think it's the best audio sharing thingy-ma-bob on the interweb. If you don't use it, you should...!

Cheers Garry! Looks like a goldmine of free goodies... I'm going to trawl through that website over the weekend. Ta
Nice one Skol, hopefully this will be a cool way to grab some feedback and chat about how our tracks have been put together. Thanks for setting up the group! I'm pretty sure we can already embed soundcloud tracks on here. Let's see if this works... EDIT: Hmm, no. I thought we could go into HTML editing mode and copy and paste the code that soundcloud gives you but we can't. I use IPboard on my site and I'm pretty sure there's an admin option to allow HTML code but of course there's a risk it could be abused. Up to the site admins to decide but it won't be the end of the world if we can't embed tracks.
No probs, happy to oblige! I thought it'd be an easier way to keep track of any new music produced by people here. And thanks to Steve and co for giving it the go-ahead. It would be great if we could also embed SoundCloud tracks on forum posts, but I'm not technically-minded enough to know how! I did try using the SoundCloud code myself as a test, but it didn't work. I'll ask around some of the technical folk at work here, but if anyone else has any advice on this then please let us know... In the meantime, spread the word!

Hi folks, I've just had approval from Steve (Crazykiwi) regarding the Basschat group on SoundCloud - so feel free to use this for sharing your music with other Basschatters! To access the group click below: http://soundcloud.com/groups/basschat To add your music to the group, click on the link marked 'share to group' at the top of whichever tracks you want to share. If you need any help, drop me a PM. Can I request that we add a sticky about this at the top of the Recording forum, so it's easy for people to find? PS: there might be scope to also embed SoundCloud tracks within forum posts - in a similar way to YouTube videos - I'll keep you posted on this... Cheers, Paul (Skol303)

Great idea! I hope this isn't treading on any toes, but I've taken the liberty of setting up a 'Basschat' group on SoundCloud, so those of us here who use the site can share music amongst ourselves more easily. The page for joining the group and using the dropbox is here: http://soundcloud.com/groups/basschat It's an open group, anybody can join it and I don't hold any control or moderation over it. If any of the Mods here would rather I remove this group and set up one of their own that's obviously no problem at all - just let me know and I'll remove it. Alternatively I'd be happy to add any of the BC team as official moderators of the group, giving them full control over it. I haven't added an image or the BC logo to the group as yet - as I felt this might be overstepping the mark - but if the folks here are happy for me to do so then that's very easily done. For the time being, feel free to use this as a place for Basschat users to share their SoundCloud stuff PS: my own SoundCloud page is here: http://soundcloud.com/skollob

I'd agree with Dave Ellefson (Megadeth) and Rob Wight (NoMeansNo) as already mentioned. I'd also add Aston "Family Man" Barrett (Wailers/Upsetters) and Horace Panter (The Specials). Neither of which are the most "flashy" players, but both form the backbone of the bands they play in.
-
Difficult question this one! Off the top of my head I'd probably plump for Hi Ho Silver Lining (Jeff Beck) or Ellens Dritter Gesang/Ave Maria... depending on my mood on the day ;-)
Some of you must be desperate for gigs
I guess that's (sort of) the point... if you have plenty of bookings and a large fanbase, then maybe you have a "sellers market" and are able to dictate your own terms. I imagine bands like Metallica and Coldplay, etc, enjoy this sort of luxury! But maybe some well known pub bands do too. However, I'd guess that most pub bands operate in a "buyers market" - which means they're at the beck and call of the buyers, those being pub landlords, like it or not.
-
Gets a doff of my cap, albeit a day late... Cliff was one of the reasons I took up bass and later went off kilter exploring the work of Bach and others. Regardless of what people think about his playing, he was a hugely influential bassist and highly creative at a time when the vast majority of metal bass players were content to just chug along in the background. R.I.P. indeed.
-
Surely the bottom line here is that the landlord/lady is the one writing the paycheck, so for the duration of the gig he/she is both the customer and the "boss". And ultimately, the customer is always right. Even when you know they're wrong. That's the 'Great Compromise' that governs all business-customer relationships. If you believe otherwise, then dare I say you either have an inflated ego, a bad business sense or a sufficient fanbase/number of bookings not to care. But regardless, the customer is always "right", because they are the one paying for the service.
If punters cant hold a conversation at the bar, or order a drink easily, you are not helping the landlord.
Spot on. Nothing is more likely to make me leave a pub than some band coming on stage, cranking it up to "11" and fantasising that they're headlining at Donnington, or wherever. That's the big difference with pub gigs, in my opinion. If I go to a club, or a dedicated gig venue, then I expect the music to be loud: that's part of the attraction. But pubs and bars play a different, more social role - at least for me - and it's important for people to be able to hear themselves speak over the music. Of course there are exceptions to this, but if it's a paid gig in a pub then the landlord has every right to tell the band to tweak the volume down. It's just a shame there isn't a similar dial for tweaking guitarists' egos!
Yours is my fav'! Bang on.
^Thanks again. I don't think I'm in with a chance of winning - not 'pop' enough most likely - but that ain't the point. If you guys like it, then I'm happy!
-
Thanks again for all your input on this - greatly appreciated folks! I didn't have as much time to work on it last night as I'd hoped (the newly arrived Skol Jnr was kicking up a stink - quite literally!). But I did make some tweaks based on your feedback, which I think has improved the track slightly in the limited time I had available. With more time I could have gone to town on it... but then I guess a mix is never finished and always abandoned, as they say! Here's a link to the finished track: http://soundcloud.com/skollob/love-superhero And here's a link to the other entries, if anyone's interested: http://soundcloud.com/groups/nnxt-remixes Cheers.!

^ Nice one, sounds like a really good gig! I bought a wah pedal off Dan last year... be good to see him live too.
-
Thanks dude. We are playing in Bolton next friday and Duke01 (vocals on Barcode Babble and the 2nd half of The Threat Of Reason) is coming with us as well as a local MC called 'Karizma' (who frankly, is amazing)... which will be awesome.
Great! I'll try to get a 'pass out' from my other half and might bring a few mates along if I do... Sounds like you have some fancy footwork going on there with the various pedal switching. That's even more impressive. I can barely control a wah while playing, as my coordination isn't the best. I might need to take up tap dancing or similar to get my tootsies in shape!
Really good job you've done. Did you do it in Reason? When I had Reason 2.5 (many moons ago) I felt that it had it's own sound (you could tell it was done in reason), but your mix sounds really good.
^ Ha ha! Yep, spot on... it's mixed in Reason (well, Record actually, but same difference). Thanks for your positive comment, I'm glad you guys like it
I'm at work - sounds fine on sennheiser hd575s but they are cans and therefore not the best thing for measuring sub bass...
^ Cheers 51m0n. Good to know it sounds ok on your Sennheisers anyway! There's quite a lot of sub in mix, but I don't want to overdo it in case it just swamps the low end.
-
Wow! That is a fantastic sound you have there... I'm amazed that you did it with no overdubs, etc. Really impressive stuff. I need to get my head around creating this sort of music in a live environment, but I need to invest in some more kit before I do so (an excuse for GAS if ever there was one!). Let me know if you're ever gigging in or around Manchester, as I'm guessing you guys are **** hot live.
-
"All your basses are belong to us" Sorry, I need to get out more... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_your_base_are_belong_to_us In answer to the question, yes I do play all of my bases. But as I 'only' own two, there's little time for either of them to gather dust.
-
^ Cheers 51m0n, thanks for your comments (as always!). Gives me some confidence to know that you and 'Airsoft think it's not too shabby... That's a really good point about varying the mood of the track and making it "grow" - I'll have a go at adding more variation to it tonight. Will also have a play with the drums too - must admit I haven't revisited the drum samples since I loaded them originally (other than some EQ/compression), so I might audition some other sounds and see how they fit. Just a quick question: did the overall mix sound ok on your system - particularly the sub bass? I'm working with 'phones only at the moment, so it's very much a case of trial and error! (with emphasis on the error...). Thanks again mate.
-
^ Cheers for the positive feedback, really appreciated! I've been following the dubstep thread under 'Effects' for a while, looking at how some of you guys play this sort of stuff live. Really impressive... I think I need some more outboard gear before I attempt any live gigs, but funnily enough I've just set up a little project with some mates to do just that - so I'll keep you posted (and will probably be pestering you for advice too!). Thanks again.

Just a sneaky link to a thread I've posted in the 'Recording' section about a dubstep track I'm planning on entering into a remix competition. Yeah, I know.... I'm being greedy by mentioning it in two threads! But I thought that some of you dubstep fans might be able to help out: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/155995-remix-competition-seeking-brutally-honest-feedback/

Folks, I've decided to enter a competition to remix a pop song by a US-based artist called NNXT. It's nothing serious; there are no big prizes involved and most of the entries to date are from amateurs like me. I'm just giving it a go to get some remixing experience and to have a bit of fun! Anyway, I'm due to submit my entry into the competition tonight (!) around midnight. The trouble is, I've had to mix the entire track using headphones only - long story - so I currently have no idea how it's going to sound through a set of speakers, be they monitors or otherwise. So... if any of you have chance, I'd be really grateful if you could give it a quick listen and reply here with any feedback. I'm particularly keen for comments on the mix, but any thoughts on the track itself are very welcome too. And please don't pull any punches here! If you think it's a pile of poop, please say so... I'm not posting here for the sake of vanity and I really do value your input on how I might improve it. The track itself is a dubstep remix, so it's certainly not to everyone's taste (but it does contain plenty of bass!). You can listen to it here: http://soundcloud.co...tion-test-track ... and you can also hear the original track here: http://soundcloud.co...-love-superhero Thanks in advance!

As with most things in life, you'll progress and improve more quickly if you practice with people who are better than you, rather than staying within your 'comfort zone'. Relax and enjoy the experience!
