Oh I'm sure it will be wholly transformative, as night becomes day. If not, just play with the settings a bit

Didn't involve a discussion about use of compressors, did it Al? I am of course pulling your leg...

Nice idea! Here's an example of something similar(ish) that I find very useful... the 'Clipalator' tool on the Zen Pro Audio website: http://www.zenproaudio.com/clipalator Allows users to play clips of the same sound files run through a whole bunch of different gear. They update it as new gear gets added to their store. Worth a look.

^ Good to have you back Rob. And well done all. I'm not going to make it this month... my music stuff is still in disarray whilst I'm faffing around with various DIY projects (now on first name terms with the staff at Screwfix). I'll launch the voting thread sometime on Sunday morning, so there's still opportunity for any last-minute entries...

Aka "releasing repressed sexual feelings towards your mother", as Freud would have it PS: GAS just forces me to collect stuff to prevent you guys from getting your buttery hands on it. But then I'm a psychopath.
-
We like to collect stuff in pursuit of happiness; to fill voids in our lives; to recapture our childhoods; to construct the illusion of stability and security in an uncertain world and more: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychology_of_collecting We dress it up in other ways, sure. But ultimately, we're all just a little bit insecure and afraid. Freud also thought it has something to do with potty training and pooing. I'm mentioning that purely for Mark's benefit

Yeah, the thread got trashed as a consequence of the Basschat site being redeveloped (itself a positive step for sure), so it's now full of unsightly 'web gunk' and missing images. To be honest it needs scrapping and re-doing. Not least because it looks like a dog's dinner, but also because some of the information is already out-of-date, such is the speed of progress with music tech. I will get round to this at some point, but in the meantime you can: Download a PDF copy, which is attached to this post (you'll need to be logged-in to do so, I think) Post any specific questions you have here and I'll endeavour to answer along with other Rec' forum regulars. Hope that helps home_recording_guide.pdf

Fingers for me, simply because I'm too clumsy to use a pick with any degree of skill and end up struggling with muting (and more basic things like hitting the right string!). I do however use a pick when the song demands it and generally like the more aggressive attack.

Some of my favourites bagsied already: especially the work of John Carpenter, Vangelis, Morricone, Hans Zimmer, John Williams, Mike Oldfield and other greats. One of my recent favourites is Moon, scored by Clint Mansell (great film too). Here's the main theme - beautifully simple, perfectly atmospheric and memorable: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_lAfMT5FIZE

“Dennis Rodman said he was busy, Glorious Leader. So we brought you the famous American musician, Jon Ban Joe Vee instead.” “This is Jon Bon Jovi?” “Yes, Ban Joe Vee, Glorious Leader. Our intelligence sources report correctly”. “Hmmm…. excute our intelligence sources immediately”.

Well done guys! Looks like a great get-together and sorry I missed it (just back from my travels today). Some really nice basses on display there

Bad news from my end; I can no longer make it Now traveling that day with work to do something far less interesting then hanging with you guys drinking tea, playing with toys and taking bass. Cheesed off but it can't be helped. Such is my work life! Have a ruddy good time and I'll hopefully see you at the next one (third time lucky?). Paul

Disappointing customer service at bass dealer
Skol303 replied to disgrace of bass's topic in General Discussion
Do it! I buy and sell as part of my job, so negotiating discounts is 'in the blood'. I don't try it on for small items, but for larger purchases I always do - because I know that every sales team has a margin they're allowed to work with. Sometimes you get told that the price shown is their best offer and that's fine. But like I said, most of the time I get a discount and for me, even £50 or so makes it worthwhile. And on rare occasions, that figure has been around £200. In fact, the more expensive the item the more likely you are to receive a discount in my experience. Which makes perfect sense, because retailers are always keen to shift the big ticket items and get their own money back. As my dear mum would say, "If you don't ask, you don't get" -
I like your inventiveness! But given some of the discussion above, I think such a device might muddy the waters even further... I dunno. I think those 'one knob' compressors are probably the best bet for anyone struggling to get their head around attack/ release/ threshold/ ratio.

That’s always vital… and this is the thing, you can get that from online retailers too. Or at least I do. For anything more expensive than cables and flimflam, I always place orders by sending an email rather than just plopping things in the ‘shopping cart’ and proceeding to PayPal. By doing so I get to build up a rapport with a member of staff, who I then contact directly next time I want to buy something from them. I always ask questions about the product to check that it meets my requirements; and I always ask for a discount due to repeat business, which I nearly always get, sometimes very generously (averaging probably 10-15%). Exactly the same principles as dealing with someone face-to-face. The only difference is I don’t walk out the door with the goods, I have to wait for them to be delivered. Works for me anyway -
I may have a few Anthrax tour shirts in my wardrobe... which reminds me they're probably still unwashed since the early 90s

I'll just incarcerate any future threads you start on the topic. Job done
-
I think that constitutes a legally binding contract to which I am going to hold you
-
It'd be fabulous if it finally did. Failing that, you can always start another thread on this topic in future to add to your collection

Not in the North of England it's not
