2. ^ Thanks Rob! I'm still noodling with the Cort Rithimic 5-string that I got earlier this year. Amazingly versatile for a passive bass.
3. Well done Rik! And everyone else who got stuck in last month. May's challenge is now on... Go, go, go
4. 5. It's a close finish but I think the winner is in sight! I can't stay up to wave the chequered flag... got an early start with the kids in the morning and they don't play fair. In the meantime, whoever wins - please message me with your choice of image and I'll post up next month's challenge as soon as I can (most likely early evening). Cheers everyone
6. Just managed to get this down before going to catch some Zzzzzz.... http://soundcloud.com/skol-mixes/noodle-03 Phew! I'll post up the voting thread tomorrow - most likely early evening as we've got family shenanigans going on during the day. So there's still time for last minute noodles if anyone is feeling tempted
7. VOTING ENDS TOMORROW AT MIDNIGHT If you haven't yet had a listen and voted, please do
8.
I know been asked lots times, but I need something for just putting down my ideas at home, dont want a full studio set up any suggestions ?
You can buy something like a Zoom handheld recorder to ‘just record stuff’ like you might once have done with a tape deck or dictaphone. You can buy an audio interface for connecting your bass to a computer and record/compose using any number of softwares. My suggested Step 1 would be to read the Beginner's Guide to Home Recording at the top of this forum. It "does exactly what is says on the tin", so to speak. And if you get stuck, just ask!
9.

Yes indeedy Rob, that's the Recording Forum in a nutshell! Always the backwater outpost of the Basschat community. Populated by a small and incestuous cadre of regulars, most of them outlaws, crazy folk and people of dubious breeding. You'll get accustomed to the tumbleweeds. They make for good kindling when the generator runs out of moonshine. (reminds me... I need to record a noodle for this month!)
10.
Skols nirvana collaboration is also worth a mention
Thank you sir! Kurt was a little 'off colour' on the day, but nothing a good saturation plug-in couldn't fix
11. Interesting discussion… but the same can said about anything old vs. its modern day equivalent. The entire antiques trade operates on this basis. Some people just like old stuff because it’s old. It’s the reason why people like buying old cars, furniture, books, records, clothes, toys, whatever. Some of them are ‘design classics’, others are out of production… but mostly, people just like them because they’ve been around a long time and have accumulated history, character, mojo, whatever you want to call it. I used to own a ‘classic car’ in my early 20s - a Triumph Herald. Loved it. But it needed constant repair, continually failed its MOT and was far less cost-efficient than running a ‘modern’ Ford Fiesta, which I subsequently purchased. The Fiesta had no mojo whatsoever, but it was fuel efficient, the heater worked and the body wasn’t in danger of detaching itself form the chasis if I braked too hard. It was all round a better product, albeit lacking in mojo (and sunroof). Same applies to bass guitars. The modern day equivalents are - in the majority cases - going to be all round better instruments. But what you can’t replicate with modern production is ‘oldness’ (at least not until we invent time machines). And that’s essentially what people are prepared to pay money for - and will continue to do so. It's no more complicated than that
12.
Why doesn't this get pinned any more?
S'all tactical I used to pin it... then I figured that people were skipping over it because they tend to ignore pinned topics... so I now let it bob up and down the running order of threads and give it a sly bump if it's nearing the bottom. It seems to pick up slightly more attention/votes this way. But I might go back to simply pinning it in future. It's a fickle business, for sure
13.
How did we end up with 7 votes in total from 3 people?
Could be due to people forgetting that they have 3 votes and not just 1. Or... it could be due to the time-travel experiments being conducted by Mr Smalls and I (see above), which are no doubt causing some kind of reality vortex, resulting in such peculiarities and many others encountered on Basschat I'm just going to leave this here and say no more...
14.
(Sorry Skol, your post in the future is now a bit more confusing...)
We just need to work a racket on the lottery numbers!... I'll message you yesterday once I've figured it out
15.
Not got to it this month, guys. Sorry. Blame Tony Kofi and Ornette Coleman!
Bastards! Jazz East gigs? Hope they go/went well Rob.
16.
That's the Soundcloud link...
Aye. And the little link alongside it, labeled , links to the video (Same for everyone else who posted videos)
17. I've got a Precision that's as old as I am. It feels, plays and smells beautiful! "There are many like it, but this one is mine."

20. Ok I'm done: http://soundcloud.co...ollob/boned-out Aiming for an early '90s grunge vibe this month, borrowing heavily from the likes of Nirvana (my sister snowboards and loves this sort of music). The title is allegedly a snowboarding term that refers to "straightening ones legs so as to emphasise a trick", known as boning out. So there you go. And I hear that dogs like bones too. So that's all points of reference well and truly covered. Guitars, bass and vocal by yours truly. The lyrics, hastily penned, are about seeking highs by taking risks. Or some such. The drums are all MIDI-triggered samples, layered with electronic equivalents to give them a bit more oomph. The drum track itself is a direct copy of a well known Nirvana tune; the middle vocal section about haemorrhoids is a tribute to the song in question (I'm sure you can work it out!). The most difficult part of this production? Trying to record a shouty, grunge vocal late at night whilst the rest of the family are in bed. It ended up as a sort of raspy half-shout, half-whisper, the result of which was a pain in the ass to EQ and fit within the mix (either too loud or too quiet). Lesson learned: if you want a shouty vocal, you really do need to shout. I'll be posting up the voting thread sometime on Sunday morning. In the meantime, here's a Nirvana smiley...
21. Oh gawd this is impossible!! Discounting much of the electronic music that I love (‘cos I assume that might not count as being “songs” in the conventional sense), my top five favourites at this precise moment in time might be, in no particular order… ‘Walkin’ - Thundercat ‘All I Need’ - Air ‘Free to Run’ - Gomez ‘All The People’ - Money Mark ‘The Patient’ - Tool
22. Well done guys! I had a quick 'skim listen' to the latest entries last night and they're all good. Mine's written and recorded - bass, guitars, vocals (plus MIDI drums) - I just need to get it mixed and made palatable. Well... I'll settle for mixed
23. There's a good rationale for using some - or lots! - of overdrive/ distortion on bass. Adding distortion increases the density of upper harmonics in bass sounds: it adds harmonic information that's not present in the original signal. This gives more options for EQ'ing the sound and generally speaking, helps the bass to still be clearly heard on small speakers. Science, innit
24. Good discussion guys! The looper rule is currently very ambiguous. Give that - for this month - let's just keep things lax and agree that it's ok to set up the layers of a looper outside of the 60 seconds - so you can prep the loops before you hit record. We'll then maybe tighten up this rule for next month. I do like the PRESS RECORD - PLAY BASS - PRESS STOP suggestion by Rob. I think that gets across the 'rules' nice and succinctly, without there being too many 'rules'... which I'm also keen to avoid (being a closet anarchist). So for this month, do as thou wilt and we'll fix the looper thing next time. Sound fair?
