1. I run an old Mac and my Focusrite interface (2i4) works fine; no latency that I can notice. Sorry, that's not very helpful is it!? Does your PC have any internal sound drivers that might be causing this problem? Perhaps contact Focusrite direct and ask them to advise - I've found them very helpful in dealing with enquiries.
 2.
You need a 44.1khz 16bit wav file, burn it as audio-cd (not data-cd).
This. And switch on 'dithering' when you output the file: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dither Most DAWs have a standard setting for dithering, which should be fine - or you can customise your own to taste.
 3. I used to have an original (unused) membership card from the Hacienda nightclub and an old ticket from Donnington Monsters of Rock (1991), both sold on eBay. I also used to have one of Jason Newsted's plectrums... I caught it when he threw it into the pit at a Birmingham NEC gig many years ago. Can't find the damn thing now, so it's probably been unwittingly thrown away!
 4. Bass is an instrument that really benefits from compression… so in my opinion you should all be using it! The confusion around compression typically stems from it being perceived as something that “squashes all of the subtlety and dynamics” out of a sound - or that it’s some kind of “cheat” that compensates for poor technique (“for me it’s all in the fingers”, etc). Both of which are missing the point. Fact is, an electric bass is capable of throwing out a very wide range of frequencies with widely differing ‘energies’, or volumes. A compressor - if correctly used - helps to even out the signal level so that each note played by the bassist has a similar ‘volume’. This helps each note to be heard and enables the bass to sit better in the mix. Used correctly, compression is a very creative and musical tool. It can be subtle and virtually unnoticeable - allowing plenty of room for dynamics and expression. Or it can be aggressive, pummelling the sound into all sorts of cool distortion. I’d wager that nearly every recorded bass that we love listening to has had compression applied to it (almost certainly if it’s been recorded in a studio). It’s really not some kind of artificial ‘performance enhancer’ - it’s a necessity for achieving a great bass tone, IMO. Me, I always record my bass dry (without any effects) and then apply compression afterwards. I don’t currently play live, but if I did I’d probably prefer to invest in my own compressor (not one of those 'one knob' pedals; a proper one with variable attack/release/ratio, etc) or have a friendly chat with the sound tech to get it set right during the warm up. Either way, I’d want compression on my bass. Period.
 5. Yep! Adele is great. Not my usual cuppa, but I love what she does. 25 is getting a lot of mediocre reviews for being 'safe'... but I think that's balderdash. What did people expect her to do - branch out into Klezmer or dubstep FFS?? Great singer. Fantastic voice. And a sense of humour. Top lass
 6.
Once again (at midnight, 25th...), the votes don't add up to a multiple of three..! Spooky..!
Yup. Some people just don't oblige with the whole 'vote for three' thing. Not so much 'spooky' as simply indicative of humankind's perpetual failing to read the small print. We must keep calm and continue
 7. Thank you Mr D! Very honest, insightful, poetic and evocative as usual ...but that's enough about me.
 8. Cheers guys! Appreciated. I'm going to opt for a set of La Bella 750NB. They're the 'lighter' of La Bella's tapewound sets (the gauge isn't too dissimilar to the stock Warwick strings) but have slightly tapered ends, which appear to fit the pin bridge of the Warwick acoustic - at least according to a couple of online reviews. Fingers crossed And thanks again for the input.
 9. I’m about to acquire an electro-acoustic bass, specifically a Warwick Alien Fretless 5 (Rockbass version). And I want to change the stock strings to a set of tapewound. Two questions: 1) Do I need to be wary of any string tension issues when swapping a set of acoustic bass strings for tapewound? (i.e. anything that a standard truss-rod tweak won’t fix). 2) Can anyone recommend a set of tapered tapewound strings? (45/65/85/105/135 or similar). NB: The Warwick has an ABG bridge, with bridge pins like a standard acoustic guitar. So the strings need to be tapered to fit within the pins. The only set of tapered tapewound that I can find online are La Bella 750NB or 760NB black nylon, which are probably great (I love La Bella flats), but I wondered if there are any other options? Thanks for any advice!

 13. Done! Very last minute for me this month... cobbled together late yesterday night and this evening. I got a "Grimm's Fairytale" type vibe from the picture; something a bit spooky, earthy and Wiccan - in an Edward Woodward / Christopher Lee sort of way, possibly directed by Guillermo del Toro. Yeah, you know what I mean. Anyway. My original idea was some kind of Eastern-European-sounding folkish ditty on acoustic guitar, something about planting acorns and the cycle of life. But I completely ran out of time. So instead I created a messy, dubstep number (if all else fails, make it noisy). Here you go: http://soundcloud.com/skollob/grimm I had fun trying to make the various synths "talk" and "yawn" by fecking around with various formant frequencies. And that's about as far as it got The voting thread will be posted up sometime tomorrow morning. As always, well done to everyone who submitted a track. I'm looking forward to hearing them all!
 14. Just to butt in with a pet peeve of mine... (Ab)use of the quote button [major felony]: when people hog page space by lazily quoting huge passages of text, rather than trimming the quote down to size. Made even worse when big chunks of text are quoted, only to be followed by "^This" or "+1". It's an outrage!!! That is all. As you were.
 15. Good tip! Cheers for sharing
 16. That does sound like a latency issue to me. As a quick fix, have you tried matching up the tracks manually? Ie. view them both as waveforms (showing the shape of the audio) and nudge one of the tracks forward/backwards until they line up. They'll both be at the same tempo (if it is a latency issue), so this should work.
 17.
(Wanders off tapping out strange polyrhythms between his fingers and issuing a raspy whistle; almost, but not quite, tuneless. 18. Are you guys on the Angel Dust again!!? We're barely a week in and already there's about half a dozen entries. And seven of them are by Dad! Or something like that Wow. Clearly nobody is 'stumped' by the picture, eh. Eh? ...I'll get my coat.
 19.
Nobody gave me a joint when I won a few months ago. What's goin on.
...caught out by lackadaisical cut'n'paste. Now fixed.
And here is the first entry for the month November!
Well done Che! It looks like we have a hot contender for Dad3353's usual award for "Early Bird Entrant". Good job

 22.
We are a bunch of amateur, weekend warriors who really only need a website for people to find out where our next gig is, or to contact us if they want to book us.
In which case it'll serve its purpose just fine I would however ditch the visitor counter and try to improve on the image gallery. More of the black and white images would fit the theme nicely.
 23.
...the entire Basschat community is now awake and hovering eagerly over your choice of photo for this month
Indeed. Tick, tock. No rush, just a constant, screaming sense of urgency!! As soon as I hear from our glorious victor I'll start up this month's challenge. Until then, here's an impatient robot hand...
 24.
I've spent a few hours this week, revamping my bands website
Honestly? It looks like a few hours work. That’s not meant to sound deliberately aloof. It’s just a bog standard band website: it doesn’t really slap me around the face with interest; but equally I’ve seen worse! Likes:

The black and white theme.
Dislikes:

The visitor counter at the bottom of the page. Outdated, pointless and detrimental. I don’t want to know that I’m one of only 200 or so people who have visited your website.
Image gallery: some of the photos are very poor quality. You’d be better off removing them - and ideally adding some video.
It doesn’t optimise on my mobile: it appears as a thin strip in the middle of my mobile browser (iOS 9.1).
Simply put, it looks very amateurish. But then you've so far only spent a few hours on it, granted. And maybe amateurish is perfectly fine for the purpose of your band - ? That's not for me to say. I'd personally prefer to run a Facebook page rather than a website of this sort. Most people/punters are familiar with the limitations of Facebook; whereas the bar is being raised increasingly high in terms of our expectations when it comes to websites. Unless web design your profession (and I'm assuming it's not), then I'd strongly recommend investing some gig earnings in getting someone to do a proper job of it. Unless, as mentioned, a website of this type is perfectly fine for the purpose of your band and what you hope to achieve. In which case ignore everything I've just said and keep having fun
 25. Well done JellyKnees! A very deserving win And well done to everyone else. Great tracks all round and a close finish in the voting. We’ll crank up November’s challenge once Mr ‘Knees messages me with his choice of picture…
