1.
Soundcloud are not a charity. They exist to make money. If their business model is built on not paying the composers of the music they supply what is due to them then Soundcloud deserve to go out of business. Otherwise their shareholders can take a small cut in profits pay up.
Therein lies the rub... their business isn't based on not paying composers the money they are due. Their T&Cs state that anyone using SoundCloud must own the rights to whatever they choose to upload; they make money from people subscribing to premium accounts that give additional privileges. As I understand it, PRS is - quite rightly - taking issue with material on SoundCloud that has been uploaded in breach of the site's T&Cs. This means that liability lies with SoundCloud, for sure. But it doesn't imply that it's an intentional aspect of their business model. YouTube has algorithms that deal with this sort of thing and I imagine that the solution will be for SoundCloud to use the same. For instance: I've uploaded remixes of commercial tracks to YouTube - tracks that I don't own, thereby in breach of YouTube's own T&Cs - and in time they've been slapped with advertising, often linking to where the original track(s) can be purchased - rather than my remix being wholesale deleted. EDIT: I should add that I'd hate for SoundCloud to become plastered in advertising! Its absence of adverts is one of its biggest charms. But that may end up being the result of this lawsuit, and so be it if so. The alternative may be to apply the music ID algorithms at the point of uploading - prohibiting the addition of music that isn't owned by the user - but that would put a stranglehold on any DJ sets and non-sanctioned remixes.
 2. Am I right in thinking this concerns people uploading commercial/licensed music to SoundCloud that they don't own the rights to? This is prohibited in SC's terms & conditions of use, but of course very difficult to police in practice. The very same issue applies to YouTube and I'd guess that PRS are having - or have had - a similar discussion with Google (YouTube's owners) about such matters. Just had a quick search in they do in fact have some info on it here... http://www.prsformusic.com/creators/helpcentre/pages/youtubedealhelp.aspx
 3. Sounds like you need a good ol' fashioned dust up! Preferably not inside the church On a more serious note... it's hard to tell whether the DB player is being a douche, or just 'over-enthusiastic'. Is there scope for you to share the role? Is some of the band's repertoire better suited to an upright / electric? That might be a positive compromise. Alternatively, you could duke it out with duelling bass solos...
 4. Currently a dead heat between three front runners... I CAN'T STAND THE SUSPENSE!! Have yet to vote myself but will do so shortly. Great tracks, everyone.
 5. Cool pic and a cool dude! I don't have photographic evidence of this particular incident... but our first born once rolled off a floor mat mid-way through a nappy change and planted his still toxic backside firmly against my then pride and joy (a Peavy Cirrus BXP I think it was), which I'd carelessly left nearby. His 'muddy' imprint still haunts me to this day. Cue gags about bum notes, etc....
 6. A quick update on this project in the OP
 7. Very nice! And well produced. I'm a big fan of Steve Lawson too, so this sort of thing is right up my street
 8. Hi Adam. The Miroslav Philharmonic workstation is often used and comes recommended by folks on here. Costs around £110. http://www.ikmultimedia.com/products/philharmonik/ If you want to push boat out further, have a look at the Spitfire Audio products: http://www.spitfireaudio.com They're top quality but as such command a fairly high price tag (averaging £300 or so per sample package). Other than that, most digital audio workstations (DAW) come bundled with a usable library of orchestral sounds. Hope that helps
 9. There are no losers! Only, err, less endowed winners!...?? I might need to rephrase that.
 10.
...for me most of this was the bass playing equivalent of a dog walking on its hind legs.
Oh go on then... ...I mean that's pretty cool, right??
 11. I enjoyed it! I get that nobody likes a showoff, but the video does a nice job in illustrating how diverse bass playing can be - technique, tone, dress code, etc... Hard to pick a favourite, but perhaps Rene Flachsenhaar (04:17) for his solid, old school funk. Also nice to see Steve Lawson of this parish doing his things; and Scott Devine.

 14.
If Skol's gonna use that as a pic if he wins, then he'll get my vote without me having to even listen to his track!
...don't stare at it for too long! It's quite hypnotic and probably laden with subversive, hidden messages! Cue Hypnotoad...
 15.
Wow.... That took me back.
You and me both! < apt smiley
 16. 860 first time round. Then 855. Then 653... I'm getting out of here before I get any worse
 17. Done! Squelchy electronica from me this month. Acid techno via Asia, Brazil and the Caribbean... http://soundcloud.com/skollob/pussyfoot ...not a genre that I imagine will catch on anytime soon Don't forget that the deadline for entries is Monday at midnight.
 18.
This spring I finally got round to pulling my finger out and making use of the space... The end result was pretty decent.
That looks great! Good job. And you have oodles of space to work in by the look of it.
This is mine... at the moment only a slab of concrete, but in the next few months it will be a studio!
Nice set up and I notice you have a pair of Avantone MixCubes. Awesome little speakers!
 19. ^ Well done chaps! I haven't listened to them yet... will so once the voting begins. All of which reminds me that I really need to get a march on with my own track
 20.
Check the recording section, in fact, get this thread moved there - loads of advice and this: http://basschat.co.u...home-recording/
Aye! Plenty of info on this in the Recording forum right here: LINKY DINK As mentioned above, my advice would be to start with GarageBand (if on a Mac) or Reaper. Audacity is a great little piece of software, but think of it as being like a "virtual tape recorder" with bells and whistles... you can't compose a song with it, but you can record yourself playing. I use it a lot myself as a tool for processing audio.
 21.
A Sunday , lunch-time-ish would give me the best chance of attendance , I would support it by paying for a ticket whether I could get there or not .
Ditto!
 22.
A DJ who plays records is not a musician.
I'd agree that a DJ who 'just' plays records isn't a musician. However... creatively mixing two records together - resulting in a new piece of music - does qualify as musicianship IMO. And therein lies the diversity of what it means to be a 'DJ'... Colin who plays popular hits of the 80s at wedding receptions, fading one song in as another one ends, is not musician. He's not 'creating' music, he's broadcasting it. Jane who plays a residency at the local nightclub, blending music 'on the fly' to create her own remixes, is a musician. She's creating new material live on stage - albeit music created using component parts made by others (akin to the 'artists collage' metaphor above). At least that's how I draw the line with DJs
 23.
It will work for bass too, but the low end is unsurprisingly limited.
That's good to know! I'll have to give it a whirl...
 24.
I had a corvette fiver once that must have been less than 16mm and it was far too tight for me. I know some ibanez basses that are down at 15/14mm.
Yeah the Corvette I have isn’t especially roomy. I think the factory spacing is 16.5mm; mine is adjusted as wide as the bridge will allow (without pushing the outer strings too close to the edge of the ‘board) at around 17mm or so. To be honest, I’ve only really started noticing string spacing since practicing slap. It doesn’t seem to make a great deal of difference when I play fingerstyle - I’m consistently sloppy no matter what the spacing is at the bridge
 25.
And not a valve in sight...!
The official products specs do actually have a section that reads... Valves Pre Amp Valves N/A Power Amp Valves N/A ...just to be absolutely clear!
