Their T&Cs state that anyone using SoundCloud must own the rights to whatever they choose to upload; they make money from people subscribing to premium accounts that give additional privileges. As I understand it, PRS is - quite rightly - taking issue with material on SoundCloud that has been uploaded in breach of the site's T&Cs. This means that liability lies with SoundCloud, for sure. But it [i]doesn't[/i] imply that it's an intentional aspect of their business model. YouTube has algorithms that deal with this sort of thing and I imagine that the solution will be for SoundCloud to use the same. For instance: I've uploaded remixes of commercial tracks to YouTube - tracks that I don't own, thereby in breach of YouTube's own T&Cs - and in time they've been slapped with advertising, often linking to where the original track(s) can be purchased - rather than my remix being wholesale deleted. EDIT: I should add that I'd hate for SoundCloud to become plastered in advertising! Its absence of adverts is one of its biggest charms. But that may end up being the result of this lawsuit, and so be it if so. The alternative may be to apply the music ID algorithms at the point of uploading - prohibiting the addition of music that isn't owned by the user - but that would put a stranglehold on any DJ sets and non-sanctioned remixes.

Am I right in thinking this concerns people uploading commercial/licensed music to SoundCloud that they don't own the rights to? This is prohibited in SC's terms & conditions of use, but of course very difficult to police in practice. The very same issue applies to YouTube and I'd guess that PRS are having - or have had - a similar discussion with Google (YouTube's owners) about such matters. Sounds like you need a good ol' fashioned dust up! Preferably not inside the church On a more serious note... it's hard to tell whether the DB player is being a douche, or just 'over-enthusiastic'. Is there scope for you to share the role? Is some of the band's repertoire better suited to an upright / electric? That might be a positive compromise. Alternatively, you could duke it out with duelling bass solos...

Cool pic and a cool dude! I don't have photographic evidence of this particular incident... but our first born once rolled off a floor mat mid-way through a nappy change and planted his still toxic backside firmly against my then pride and joy (a Peavy Cirrus BXP I think it was), which I'd carelessly left nearby. His 'muddy' imprint still haunts me to this day. Cue gags about bum notes, etc....

Hi Adam. The Miroslav Philharmonic workstation is often used and comes recommended by folks on here. Costs around £110. http://www.ikmultimedia.com/products/philharmonik/ If you want to push boat out further, have a look at the Spitfire Audio products: http://www.spitfireaudio.com They're top quality but as such command a fairly high price tag (averaging £300 or so per sample package). Other than that, most digital audio workstations (DAW) come bundled with a usable library of orchestral sounds. Hope that helps

I enjoyed it! I get that nobody likes a showoff, but the video does a nice job in illustrating how diverse bass playing can be - technique, tone, dress code, etc... Hard to pick a favourite, but perhaps Rene Flachsenhaar (04:17) for his solid, old school funk. Also nice to see Steve Lawson of this parish doing his things; and Scott Devine.

However... creatively mixing two records together - resulting in a new piece of music - does qualify as musicianship IMO. And therein lies the diversity of what it means to be a 'DJ'... Colin who plays popular hits of the 80s at wedding receptions, fading one song in as another one ends, is not musician. He's not 'creating' music, he's broadcasting it. Jane who plays a residency at the local nightclub, blending music 'on the fly' to create her own remixes, is a musician. She's creating new material live on stage - albeit music created using component parts made by others (akin to the 'artists collage' metaphor above). At least that's how I draw the line with DJs
