Ok, I'm in. A big dollop of dub and drum'n'bass from me this month... which will surely prove to be about as popular as a fart in a lift. But who cares, it's Christmas! http://soundcloud.com/skollob/firework PS: Deadline for entries is tomorrow at midnight. I'll post up the voting thread sometime on Wednesday.

Just finished hastily sketching mine out, so I decided to have a quick squiz at the entries so far... And wow! F'ing brilliant That is all. As you were.

Any 'professional' is someone who earns a living from a particular profession or trade - in this case music - and has acquired the skills or in some cases qualifications/ standards necessary to do so. Personally, in this context, I associate it with someone who has made a career out of music - rather than someone who earns a bit of extra income from it as a paying hobby. I think the term professional inherently implies a certain level of skill and ability. Generally speaking, you'd need to be a musician of a certain standard in order to make a career out of it. Or be exceptionally lucky. Thankful the same doesn't typically apply to other professions, such as brain surgery.
Pay with a credit card and you're protected. Paypal too.
This. PayPal gets a lot of flak, but this is precisely the sort of sitiation it's designed to help take the risk out of. Ask the seller to invoice you for the bass through PayPal as a commercial transaction. That will create the necessary paper trail that you'll need should anything go wrong. PayPal are generally very good at backing buyers (moreso than sellers), so their policies work to your advantage. But as with all such deals, trust your gut feeling. If it doesn't feel right, don't do it - and vice versa

BIG hip hop fan here Plenty of good stuff already posted in this thread. My record boxes are mostly stocked with fairly old skool stuff: Gang Starr, KRS1, Tribe Called Quest, NWA, etc, etc. But I still keep an ear to the ground for new material. Anyway... Here's my contribution to the thread. A bona fide classic by Dead Prez. Lyrics, message and delivery are spot on IMO. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jNyr6BJZuI

Brilliant! I'm so pleased to hear it went well, Mike. I knew you'd be in good hands with Lurks and from what I hear, you've been roped into his composition this month?! Seems like a fair deal to me Well done to Lurks for being the Obi-Wan to your Skywalker. Sterling work mate. And yes, this means you now have to show your face more often in the Recording forum. It's the law! Cheers guys
To put into perspective how heavy the corvette was for me. The corvette weighed near enough double of my current bass! A real shame too as it sounded absolutely fantastic!
Is your current bass also bubinga? ‘Cos bubinga is one helluva dense and weighty wood. If you compare it against something like swamp ash, for example, the difference in weight will be huge. For instance, I have a 5-string swamp ash Corvette standard (an old German one) and it’s lighter than most 4-strings. I imagine it has a different tone to bubinga, however.

Nice Warwick!! (just teasing you Mark...) As for P-bass vs Stingray... isn't this one of those 'apples and oranges' discussions? I mean, you can get more juice out of an orange, but apples are much nicer baked with cinnamon. I don't own a Stingray. Yet. But I do have a P-bass and yes it is very versatile in the sense that its tone fits with most styles of music. But I'd also argue that its tone is quite limited. Sure, you can switch things up by adjusting your playing style, using a pick/fingers, rounds/flats, etc. But it's all really just slight variations on a similar theme. That's not to criticise the P-bass. Again, I own one and love it. I just think it has a relatively limited range of tones - but it just so happens that the tones it does have are very nice indeed I imagine that the Stingray is a similar beast. But like I said, I've yet to find that out for myself.

I haven’t listened to it yet (at work and no speakers), but you can usually tackle fret noise by EQing, rather than re-recording. A shelving EQ around 2kHz will kill most fret noise stone dead - or at least dampen it sufficiently for it to go unnoticed. But of course you’d need to play around with the EQ to get it sounding ‘right’ to your own taste. Just an idea.

Ultimately, it’s all about… 1) Whichever operating system your prefer and are most comfortable using. And importantly, whichever is going to least get in the way of your music-making. I’ve used Macs for years and get frustrated using PCs (no doubt due to my own ignorance), so I stick with Mac through and through. I know where everything is. I know what everything does. I know how to get things working quickly. So I don’t need to go thinking about the OS as part of my workflow. Job done. 2) RAM! RAM! And more RAM! Processor speed is also important, but ideally you want a computer with bucketloads of memory. Mine doesn’t have bucketloads of memory… so I frequently have to render individual tracks when working on a mix, otherwise my computer’s CPU starts complaining. So investing in RAM (8Gb or more is ideal) is money well spent. My own next computer will probably be a mid-range Mac Mini (I currently run a 2010 iMac). They're surprisingly powerful and reasonably priced... well, reasonably priced for an otherwise over-priced Mac
That's a party? I thought it was a terrorist attack at a fireworks factory!
Believe it or not, it is indeed a celebration! I didn’t want anyone getting sidetracked by the details, but given that Len has already mentioned a Latin route it won’t hurt to spill the beans that it’s a photo from… The National Pyrotechnic Festival in Tultepec, Mexico I’m not getting all taco and quesadillas about it myself, but knock yourselves out! In fact I don’t yet know how I’m going to approach it. Other than hastily amongst work deadlines and last-minute Christmas faffing. Bah-humbug.
