3. September’s Composition Challenge is now underway. Here's the image for your inspiration... And here are the rules 'n' stuff… By entering the competition you agree to the Basschat Terms & Conditions and Forum Guidelines, which are designed to help ensure the forum remains free of offensive and/or illegal behaviour and material. In a nutshell: 1) Please avoid any content that other forum users may find offensive. If your track contains explicit lyrics, for example, then please warn other forum users so they can choose for themselves whether to listen to it. 2) Please make sure you have permission to use any 3rd party sounds included in your track (ie. sounds that you have not recorded yourself, such as samples of other people's music). The owners of Basschat accept no responsibility for infringements of copyright or other forms of legal ownership, which are solely the responsibility of competition entrants. If we spot any breaches of copyright then your track will be removed from the competition. For reference: here's a great source of copyright-free material, all available under Creative Commons license: http://www.freesound.org/ 3) Entries should be no more than five minutes long and written/produced during the month of the competition, taking inspiration from the photo provided. No cheating! If you have any questions about the competition rules, just ask. The deadline for entries is midnight on Wednesday 24th September. PS: This month marks the second anniversary of the Composition Challenge. A big thanks to Charic who first started the tradition back in 2012... and an equally big thanks to everyone who's taken part and voted since then! If you want a trip down memory lane, check out the Challenge Archive in the 'Share Your Music' sub-forum, which contains links to each of the Composition Challenges since time immemorial. Cheers!
 4. Well I wasn't expecting that. Especially as my effort had the least to do with the picture! But then I suppose it's not all about the picture... Well done everyone. Gary (lowdown) got my vote this month with Bilbo and Mr Smalls a very close joint second. Good production by all and special credit to first-timer Bass Bus! Hopefully the start of more to come I'll kick-start the new challenge sometime today. Cheers, Paul
 5. Precision = thump Jazz = burp
 6. Bloomin' 'eck! Am I reading the price of these things right at around £230?!! Looks like a lot of nice bass for the money. Good score
 7.
I did try to leave comments on the Soundcloud page but it didn't go on - do you have to be a member/sign in to leave a comment???
Yeah, you need to have a SoundCloud account in order to leave comments (free to set up if you're interested). Otherwise you're very welcome to post any feedback here - it's always hugely appreciated and we all have thick skins, so be as constructively critical as you like
 8.
They play fine in Firefox. I have an old version of Mac OSX - never updated to a later one.
Good to know you got to listen to them!
 9.
Mac OSX and Safari.
That’s odd… I've just tested it in Safari (version 7.0.6) on my own Mac (OSX 10.9.4) and all of the tracks are playing ok. I'll do some Googling in the morning and try to find out what might be the problem.
 10. You could pick up a second hand Warwick Corvette Standard (a German-made one) for that budget. The swamp ash models are super light for a five string. And they sound awesome
 11. The middle one. The other two sound like SAGA Holidays' equivalent of Club 18-30. And no hyphens. They're a no-no in current T'Internet parlance
 12. Lovely review mate! Neil Spencer typically knows his onions too when it comes to spotting good music. Well, I usually agree with him... and of course my own taste is impeccable Very excited for you and all the best for the launch event on Thursday.

 17. Another hasty creation from me this month. I seem to be making a habit of this last-minute malarkey, which is very out of character but nonetheless good fun. The track was written and recorded today, in and around various not-so-lazy-Sunday goings on at home. It’s been lovely and bright in Manchester and I’ve been in fine fettle… so I must admit that I struggled to get into the sombre mood of the picture and ended up producing something on the sunnier side of the spectrum. So yeah; I'm probably about as far away as possible from capturing the image this month. But what the heck. It’s meant to be a love story, right?? http://soundcloud.com/skollob/give-heart-give-head I’ve dusted off my fretless for this one. Hence the god awful intonation at times! I find that with fretless - if I don’t keep up the practice, like daily, then my intonation goes to poop. Oh well. I’ll post up the voting thread at midnight. Cheers all. Paul
 18.
So maybe there's scope for a thread on here "Jam Partners wanted"? Unless there's one already that I can't find? If anyone's in the South Lincs, North Cambs area? I could do with honing my guitar skills a bit more....
We have a Musicians Wanted forum: http://basschat.co.uk/forum/25-musicians-wanted/ ...but nothing specific to finding someone to just jam with. In the past, the idea of a sub-forum on 'finding someone to collaborate with' has been floated in the Recording forum, so there might be scope for something there. I'll test out the idea and if it's a good one, I'll claim it as my own and bask in the glory Cheers.
 19.
I have this IT problem where the mix I finish in Cubase doesn't transfer in it's entirety when I do an audio mix. Some does but not all of it. So what you hear is an approximation of my mix
As a workaround, try rendering (exporting) each individual track/instrument of your composition as a separate file (.WAV format). Then re-load the resulting audio tracks into Cubase, and THEN try mixing them. I often do this when my own computer is creaking under the weight of various VSTs and other CPU-hungry software. Worry a try! ---------- PS: good to see a decent crop this month! I've only briefly skim-listened to each one; impressive stuff. I'm hoping to write/record my own entry today, once I've tackled a few household chores
 20. A quick ‘shout out’ to Jack and Kieran of Jack’s Instrument Services in sunny Manchester. http://www.jacksinstrumentservices.com/ Just picked up my Warwick Corvette this morning after they gave it a proper set-up and I’m very happy with the results. Nice low action without a hint of unwanted buzz; the frets are shining ‘as new’ and it plays like proverbial butter. If you’re in Manchester - or the North West generally - then I highly recommend these guys. Great service, sensible prices and thoroughly nice people. Cheers! Paul
 21.
When does voting start on this?

...'officially', entries are to be 'in' by midnight on Sunday, 24th, so voting would presumably start following that, subject to Skol's availability (and having a few more pieces to vote for..! ). Usually, there's a bit of 'wiggle room' built-in for unforeseen events, such as unfinished opuses, web downtime, lightning strikes or attack from penguins, though.
Yup, the deadline for entries is midnight this coming Sunday (24th). ...assuming the penguins don't intervene again! It's not their unrelenting evil that perturbs me, but that funny walk they insist on doing. Damn their souls.
 22. In chronological order:

Got bought a cheap turntable by my dad, circa 8-9 years old. First records bought were 'I'm the Leader of the Gang' by Garry Glitter and a Top of the Pops album with a semi-pornographic cover
Made 'remixes' as an early teen by chopping sections out of songs using play/stop on a tape deck and recording the outcome on another. Felt like Brian Eno, without knowing who he was.
Got into heavy metal (everyone was doing it...). Wanted to be like Cliff Burton of Metallica so bought a bass.
Played in an originals band that took inspiration from Metallica and Suicidal Tendencies, crossed with Half Man Half Biscuit.
Fell in love with acid house and the early rave scene. Sold all of my gear and bought a set of Technics turntables and a mixer at around 18 years of age. Started DJing in clubs and at free parties.
Became a music journalist aged 21. Met Bjork
Got a 'proper' job aged 28; packed away my turntables and records.
Started making music again about a decade later. Bought a bass. Then another
Discovered Basschat...
23.
The idea is, you buy the most expensive designer clothing, and then to go out clubbing with the sole intension of making sure the night club photographer takes a photo of you and your mates flexing your biceps, pointing at each other, and looking seriously into the camera. They don't even have fun, and they are far too 'cool' to dance or even have a laugh... The youth of today are a generation of self obsessed morons.
...but there were kids doing exactly that on Saturday nights at the Hacienda in the early '90s, whilst I was making my way to some warehouse in the back ass of nowhere to get off my rocker with other dishevelled techno hippies The youth of today are no more self-obsessed than any previous generation. There are just more ways of broadcasting self-obession in today's climate of social media and cheap telly. By comparison, I'm fairly sure it took a good dollop of self-obsession and vanity to be a dedicated Mod, Rocker, Skinhead, Punk, etc
 24. How many of us can honestly say that we're 'in tune' with whatever the youth of today is thinking, wearing, listening to, etc...? Given the demographics of the Basschat membership, I very much doubt - and in fact hope - that most of us don't have a clue about the 'youth of today'. Because if us 40, 50, 60-year olds are in tune with youth culture, then there's something seriously wrong with the world Of course today's youth will look back on the music from their childhood in 50 years time. I grew up with heavy metal, the Beastie Boys, acid house and rave music. That for me is nostalgia - not the Beatles or the Sex Pistols or Steely Dan. Much of this debate is just born out of the inevitable aging process that we all go through. Every generation wants to fight getting old; every generation believes that its music is better than that of the next generation; and whatever kids are listening to will never be 'proper music'... until they're old enough to tell the next generation of kids that it is. I'm 40. And a few months ago I went to a warehouse rave, attended by around 5000 young 'uns who were happily 'having it large' in exactly the same way I was 20 years old. If not moreso. And I found that very re-assuring! Trust me. The kids are having a wail of time and loving music just as much as we all did (and still do). All that's changed is we're now old(er) and out of touch. Deal with it
