1. Swamp ash Jazz body, Squier neck and VM pickups with 500kΩ pots. Action as low as you can get it. Add an S1 switch and you're good to go.
2. I've done it, but bear in mind that you're completely at the mercy of the engineer - I remember one gig where the chap on the desk was less than competent and I ended up not being able to hear anything bass on stage; just guitar and drums. Not braved it since.
3. Congrats on your new bass, glad it worked out for you.
4. I retubed an SVP PRO preamp using their tubes and the difference between those and the stock tubes was staggering. Yes, Watford Tubes aren't cheap, but you gets what you pays for - particularly with tubes.
5. I do step 1 & 2 and then wind so that the string works its way down the tuner. I've never done step 3.
6. Good Vibrations by The Beach Boys. Magical. https://youtu.be/QSLMWasU0rM
7. Frank Zappa had some great (and equally questionable) song titles; some of which are not for publication on a squeamish and conservative forum such as this. 😳
8. Are the pickups out of phase? That'll cause a Jazz to sound weak and trebly.
9. To be honest though, fretless never went away 'round here...
10.
I Love the DX7
I don't .
11.
Quite surprised no one has mentioned strings yet. Do you have rounds or flats on there? Flats would make it less bright
This. Although if you want to play about with the capacitor on the tone knob then I think the standard is a 0.047µf and a 250kΩ pot. If you swap it for a .1µf then you'll drop the cut off frequency. As a rule of thumb, larger capacitor values send more of the treble to ground (making it disappear from the output signal). Have a play about. It's a much cheaper option to buying a set of flats - capacitors can be had for pence.
12.
Why not add the reverb post production.. Or am I getting the wrong end of the stick?
I tend to have a couple of reverb busses on the mixer and have a master guitar bus with a high quality 'verb on it; it's more to do with amp modelling and effects.
13. I've seen worse. It's got a 'Westone' vibe to it, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.
14. Selling my Vox Stomplab G1. Tons of amp/FX combinations and
15. When I was at music college I almost bought a Wal fretless for £700. Ah well...
16. Octave pedal. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uH5kb5_TnfI
17. That looks like a 2103H to me. Does it have horn attenuation on the back? Great cabs!
18. I play in a metal band, so rehearsals and gigs are fretted but only so that I can get the clacky 'metal on metal' sound. Playing everything else (depping, home practice, writing and recording) is a job for the fretless. I just prefer the sound of the fretless and the amount of expression available is vastly superior to fretted basses (in my opinion).
19. Have we had the ubiquitous Behringer BDI-21 yet?
