Are the pickups out of phase? That'll cause a Jazz to sound weak and trebly.

To be honest though, fretless never went away 'round here...

Although if you want to play about with the capacitor on the tone knob then I think the standard is a 0.047µf and a 250kΩ pot. If you swap it for a .1µf then you'll drop the cut off frequency. As a rule of thumb, larger capacitor values send more of the treble to ground (making it disappear from the output signal). Have a play about. It's a much cheaper option to buying a set of flats - capacitors can be had for pence.

I play in a metal band, so rehearsals and gigs are fretted but only so that I can get the clacky 'metal on metal' sound. Playing everything else (depping, home practice, writing and recording) is a job for the fretless. I just prefer the sound of the fretless and the amount of expression available is vastly superior to fretted basses (in my opinion).

Have we had the ubiquitous Behringer BDI-21 yet?

I'd do it, but then again I've got some [i]really[/i] good shoes to look at

DHA VT1 EQ for me. Squier VM fretless Jazz with Dunlop flat 45s into the VT1 - lovely sound with just a hint of breakup. The trick is to balance the 'input' and 'gain' controls with each other.

Could buy a DHA VT1 EQ for half of that!
