1.
the way I got my Jazz to 'cut through' was to fit a push/pull volume control so I could make the pick ups in series, makes the lower mids more pronounced, a lot like my P bass, which I guess is not quite the idea, but does solve the problem of the Jazz not being heard in the mix
This.
2.
Big Martin, ex Faith No More guitarist is a pumpkin farmer
Thanks for that; I was wondering about 'Big Ugly Jim' the other day. You've saved me a google.
3. it means fretting the string, but lifting your fretting finger off the string just enough to deaden the note - so you get a rhythmic noise and not an actual note. It's quite common in funk and disco. Scott's Bass Lessons has a video here: https://youtu.be/_GoQDWVuCes
4. Two of my suggestions have already been mentioned: Presto - Rush One Hot Minute - RHCP
5. Looks a lot like a Two Notes. I mean that in a very nice way!
6.
Donald Fagen, The Nightfly. Think I'm the only muso ever who doesn't like this. Those irritating 'clever' songs played so perfectly with no soul/feel. Liked early Steely Dan stuff, but then it all ended up sounding like this.
Me too. I don't get how you have a 'supergroup' at your disposal and end up sounding like lift music from the 80s.
7. Anything by the Eagles. I used to play in a band whose entire first set (roughly 45 mins) was in the key of G major and featured a minimum of 3 Eagles numbers. We shan't work together again.
8. I rehearse and perform with ear plugs in. I practice at home at a much more respectable volume so that when I'm doing the above I don't really need to critically hear stuff, as it's mostly on 'automatic pilot'. Mostly...
9. I think unless you list it as having 'new strings' then they can go whistle.
10. I'm not a fan. Might be easier to just buy s replacement pup cover for a few quid.
11.
He's one of my favourites but if I had to pick one tune it would be Maiden Voyage
This. magnificent tune.
12. Amps: Marshall bass combo (first amp) - Dreadful farting box. Trace Elliot Series 6 130Watt GP7 (twice) Ampeg SVP PRO (Various power amps) Ampeg B2RE Ashdown MAG thing (sounded good, but bits started dropping off after 4 days) Hartke LH500 and 1000 SWR SM400 (current) Cabs: Trace Elliot 1153 Trace Elliot 2103H Hartke Hydrive 410 Barefaced Compact (current) Not bad for nearly 30 years of playing.
13.
Here's some Cynic
Sean Malone graces this track (Red Barchetta) on the Rush tribute CD 'Working Man' https://youtu.be/PyxhYk8YLvo?t=1h1m Most of the album is very good and Billy Sheehan is all over it for roughly half of the album.
14. Cronos from Venom used to have a half and half bass in the mid 80s (the upper half of the fingerboard was defretted), but I don't recommend it. Or listening to Venom for that matter
15. I remember a doing this with a drummer friend of mine in music college. I held down chords and he smacked the strings, it all went through an old DOD FX25 and sounded brilliant. Unfortunately that recording is lost in the mists of time
16.
Pearl Jam, Ten. That album persuaded me to get a fretless as my main bass years ago when I was in a heavy rock band. The playing is tasteful and excellent, Alive is a good fretless tune.
This. Check out the Police 'Live' album and John Giblin's awesome playing on Fish's debut solo album 'Vigil in a wilderness of mirrors' too

18.
Here's hoping for a 2017 that's not so cruel
It can't be as cruel as this year; there's hardly anyone left RIP Rick.
19. I'd plump for a DHA VT1 DI every time. I don't turn mine off. ever. http://www.davehallamps.co.uk/page54.html Mine goes into a super clean SWR head that's got ridiculous amounts of tone shaping, but no 'grit'.
20. we do a few Maiden numbers - Hallowed be thy name, 22 Acacia avenue, and the Trooper - they always go down really well and we enjoy doing them too. Win/win.
21. I seem to remember being told that 'arry has a ridiculously light touch and just tickles them.
22. Why does BC not have a 'LIKE' button already?!? Beautiful track Fabrocker; love it.
23.
The rub is that your preamp almost certainly won't use 250k tone pots (looks like 50k or 100k), so you will lose some range (brighter settings) as finding dual gang pots with 2 different resistances is not easy.
It's fairly easy to make one, buy a dual ganged pot of one of the values and a single gang pot with the other. Take the back off both pots and replace the carbon trail on ONE of the dual gang wipers with the second value (from the single pot) and reassemble. You'll need a flat blade to prise the clasps off the back and some pliers to refasten them, but other than that it's fairly easy. 😄
