1. I've got Dunlop Flats (45 to 105) on my fretless Jazz. Love 'em. I still get lots of 'twang' out of them, but then I've got a really heavy plucking technique.
2. We refer to it as a 'push'. Quite common in rock and essential in Motown/Soul music too. AC/DC have made a career out of syncopated blues, as have many others. If it helps then show this to your drummer, might help him to understand if he sees it as well as (not quite) listens to it... 3. I think it's a better use of money than than the £369m we're spending on Buckingham Palace.
4. I use a file on mine to get down to the bare metal, then use a temperature controlled iron and good old 60/40 lead/tin solder. Works every time.
5.
I'll go for the two not on the list: Envelope Filter and Octave pedal...plus chuck in a Synth as 3rd choice.
You can't be BoOtsy without a filter and an octave! 😉
6. Overdrive and Octave. (DHA VT1 EQ and Boss OC2 if we're being specific...) Why is Octave not on the list???!!!!!???!!!
7. Some sort of octave is always good for this sort of thing; if you're looking at an octave down (OC2, OC3, EBS Octabass, Aguilar OctaBass etc...) then you'll have to play the line up and octave to really get the benefit, or you could use an octave UP (EHX POG or HOG etc...) and play the line as it is. Secret option 'c' is to use an octave fuzz - this'll add lots of dirt to your sound in addition to an octave above every note you play - not appropriate for every situation, but LOTS of fun.
8. One of my fave Floyd tracks. http://youtu.be/pJh9OLlXenM
9. Could you not feed the monitors from the PA?
10. NBD = new bass day, often found after a period of GAS (gear acquisition syndrome) of indeterminate length. There's also FML (f*** my life) but that's for another time...
11. I made a 1x12" cabinet using an 8Ω, 50W driver from a guitar combo out of plywood (about 5mm) on a frame made from 20mm square pine; cost less than £20 all in. Glued it together using generic wood glue from the local hardware shop and it performs well at reasonable volume without rattling. I can't understand how experienced amp manufacturers can get it wrong if I can knock one up in my shed using hand tools.
12. I'm with Sausage, but given a choice between the two I'd plump for 5/4 every time
13.
Cliff, man... what are you doing??
Well, at least he's got more hair than Rob Halford...
14. Carol Kaye's books are available for Kindle from Amazon - no tab, just dots and lines. Great tutor books too, and not just reading practice.
15. Aphex punch factory (the old orange one). Really simple optical compressor.
16. I was just listening to this the other day. Doesn't sound like a Stingray at all to me. Superb playing though, whatever it was on.
17. Rush have done pretty well out of this sort of setup for a few years...
18.
Glare at the drummer so everyone else knows it was their fault
This. It's the only sensible solution to such a problem
19. I reckon the it's the cab. Everything else can be tweaked (eq settings, playing style and position etc...) but there's no way to adjust the sound of a cab ( withthe exception of positioning, but there's seldom any opportunity to do this on a gig).
20. Each pickup will have a black and white wire (your colours may vary, but they'll be different colours), take the wire that is soldered to the back of the neck volume control (ground) off the back of the pot, so it's floating loose inside the bass. Then remove the wire that goes to the middle lug of the bridge pickup off the centre lug and join it to the first wire that you removed. Make sure that it's isolated (electrician's tape or similar) and that's it. Effectively you'll have a black and a white joined together at the end.
21. Looks nothing like Tracey Island, Paahhhh!!!
22. My personal preference: 1) Bitsa Fretless Jazz 2) Bitsa Fretted Jazz Metal band's preference: 1) Bitsa Fretted Jazz 2) Bitsa Fretless Jazz This is really easy with only 2 basses!
23.
...and as they show up all the string noise etc I have found that my playing has got better as I'm trying to keep the extraneous noise to a minimum.
This is the best reason for practicing through headphones; I hear every little detail and it really highlights any shortcomings in my technique.
