1.
I play Jazz basses and pretty much always go for the classic 'everything on full' approach. That sound is why I play jazzes.
Me too. Occasionally we'll do something by Iron Maiden or Saxon (or something in a similar vein) and I roll the back pickup off to give me more of a P bass sound. That's about it.
2. Check out 'Rank' (live Smiths album) too - great playing from all (but Mozza sings sharp throughout the entire album) and shows how good they were live.
3. I'd like to see a video explaining why they're made...
4. The Rick's probably got the thinnest neck of all of those you've mentioned; I'm a die-hard jazz player (I like a skinny neck too) and borrowed a Rick for a session - couldn't get on with it as the neck was too thin.
5. I watched the video and I liked the sound of the bass. Except when he went up the dusty end and soloed over the backing track - sounded out of tune to me, should have checked the intonation before filming that methinks...
6.
By listening to records & trying to copy what I heard.
This. Led Zeppelin II and a compilation CD of Soul tunes (Midnight Hour, Knock On Wood, RESPECT etc...).
7. Bass into a DHA VT1 DI EQ. iPod into the line in and a pair of Sennheiser in-ears from the headphone out. Sounds great.
8. Mostly riding my bike, avoiding homework and playing computer games on a Spectrum. I wouldn't pick up the bass for another 6 years.
9. Great thread Rushbo, I'll play when I get some pics taken.
10. There's a really beautiful painting of that bass in someone's attic somewhere...
11. I put both of my basses together for less than £100 each and gig the, both fairly regularly. There's probably some folks on here that can beat theat though...
12. I've had some great sounds out of a Nux Modcore. Cheap as chips too.
13. Offer them to a local FE college that run a music course - often there's very little budget for that sort of thing, or see if a local music shop has a roster of young students who might need them.
14. Unopened new RHCP album? Probably best to keep it that way...
15.
What if it was one of Adam Clayton's?
Then you'd not mention it, and sell it as 'nearly new'.
16. Get a digital desk - have a rehearsal without said 'sound engineer' (and I use the term loosely), get a level that works for everyone, then save it as a preset. Job done!
17. Why not just use a good pair of headphones?
18.
I used to buy Bassist magazine back in the day, when it ceased publication I tore out all the transcriptions and put them in a folder. Still have that folder and Waterfalls is in there.
I remember that issue! I don't have them anymore, but I recall spending quite a bit of time learning that line ( at the tender age of 18ish); I didn't need it for any gigs, I just thought it was a great line. Turns out I was right!
19. No I wouldn't. The simple reason is if a 'big name' player has had it, then they'll have used up most of the notes.
20. Programmable pedalboard controller - user defines which pedal(s) get activated via different switches? They probably already exist though.
21. Me too: beautiful, slim necks (with black blocks and binding) and a lovely, snappy tone. Best basses ever!
22. Nice rig! Welcome back.
23. Tried these recently, but I find them a bit too chunky. they're 0.050", 0.075", 0.095" and 0.110" and cut for a four-in-line (standard 34" Fender style) headstock. Seen about 3 week's use (home playing and amazingly only 1 gig) £17 including P&P to mainland UK
24. How much power do you need?
