1. I use one of these: http://www.gear4music.com/Guitar-and-Bass/Aroma-RT-08-Metal-Stomp-Tuner/MRL Really, really big display, which comes in handy.
2. At 22 I'd say go for it. I did. I'm 40 now and still teaching / gigging / recording regularly. It's not an easy life though, and it helps if you have a support network around you, but be prepared to work very, very hard. You'll have some great gigs, and some where you feel like you're wasting your time, but even a bad gig is better than no gig. Get regular exercise and eat well (as well as you can when you're playing away/on tour) though, it'll keep the energy levels up. Good luck.
3.
iLok gets a bad press but I've never had a problem with it. My only gripe is that it doesn't double as a memory stick for stuff like Waves licences.
My iLok (2nd generation) has all of my Waves licenses on it too. Still a pain in my arse though.
4. Mostly. I picked up most of the stuff I use everyday by listening to (and transcribing) LPs in the early 90s (Led Zep, Iron Maiden, Rush etc…) then delved into Jazz (had a few lessons in Jazz playing from some very good teachers), but my 'money' playing is in heavy rock/metal.
5. Sad to see. I loved Maverick A Strike when I first bought it. I just hope that this is a rough patch, and he can work through whatever is ailing him and get himself together before it's too late.
6. Anybody got any experience of an OTB into a Barefaced Compact? Just curious...
7. Joni Mitchell penned the track 'Blue' as a tribute to her brother Phils' overalls after her clutch went on the M20, and he nipped out to pick her up from the Roadchef.
8.
It depends really what you want to do with it. If you're essentially going use your DAW as a multi-track tape machine with excellent editing facilities then it's probably ProTools. If you need MIDI either for plugin instruments or external synths and other devices Logic is still streets ahead. Having said that though, I would no longer spend money on ANY software that required iLok to function no matter how cheap or good it was.
Yeah, I moved to Pro Tools for the audio editing (at the time Cubase wouldn't let me edit multi-track drum takes simultaneously, so I could keep all the tracks phase-aligned). The iLok IS a huge pain in the arse though.
9. Ah mate, been there, done that. Slander were on at the Caveman Bash in Lancashire last night; really helpful, friendly, and above all professional stage crew, and we had a blast. I thought we weren't quite as quick out of the blocks as we usually are, but it was a good do. Set was a mix of covers and originals and went down well.
10. Could you not just cover it in fish and have the cat lick it?
11. I'm on ProTools 10.3.10 over here, and I moved from Cubase (after 15 or so years) because Cubase wouldn't do what I needed it to (at the time, roughly 10 years ago). I looked at Logic (I think it was 7 or 8), but hated it - it was clunky, nothing was where I would have expected it to be, and it kept crashing. Apparently the version of Logic I tried was a real dog, and very short-lived, but I didn't know this at the time. I plumped for PT (also because I needed it for work) and have been there since. The iLok (USB dongle) still makes me think I'm living in the '90s, and the plugins that are included in the initial package are nothing to write home about (with very few exceptions). Given the choice again I would have gone with Logic, as it's the best 'all in one' purchase. The plugins and audio engine are superb straight out of the box, and it's a fraction of the price of Pro Tools.
12. There's one just turned up in the For Sale section today... http://basschat.co.uk/topic/265513-fsft-tc-electronic-nova-system-dha-vt1-eq-bass-drive/
13. Sweet baby jesus and the orphans! That's my Year Of Birth bass right there. Can't afford it. Good luck with the sale though.
14. Maximum width at the body end is 61mm, so slightly smaller than the 'standard' 63mm.
15.
I am on the look out for a VT2 EQ after selling mine too. I know it's too big and you need to make sure you have the right power supply but nothing has come close for me and that's after a whole number of drive pedals.
I found this with the VT1 EQ. I'm on my second, as I thought I could get the same sound with smaller, 9v centre-negative pedals. Turns out that I couldn't. If you wants a tube drive, buys a tube drive.
16. Yup. Love them. My weapon of choice is the VT1 EQ, and I never leave home without it. Even festival gigs where there isn't room or time to take the pedalboard I'll have it velcroed to my amp head. There's a really comprehensive review here: https://youtu.be/cYpdDY3dMxo
17. I've heard of people putting nail varnish in there to do the same job. Not sure I'd glue stuff though, and I'd definately not Loctite® it unless I absolutely, never, unequivocally didn't want it to move again. Ever.
18. Ah well, at least it's not snuff. It is pretty vile though.
19. Brilliant. You might want to start buying 60W bulbs in bulk too….
20.
Mo Foster and Eddy Grant have just collaborated on a recording of ZZ Top's Cheap Sunglasses.
Odd thing about Eddie Grant - he was entirely self-funding.
