1. I like to DI and mic with an SM57. I've used other mics that did a better job of capturing the full frequency range, but I like to put a low pass filter on the DI'ed signal and put an opposing high pass filter on the 57 and blend the 2. Depends on the sound you're after though.
2. What's wrong with the humble recorder? I really enjoy playing mine. Yes, it's got a limited range (until you get really into it), but as an introductory instrument they're heap as chips, not particularly loud, and encourage you to take steps in the right direction with regards to breath control, fingerings etc... Available in different flavours too, including Soprano, Alto, and (you guessed it) Bass!
3. Beautiful bass that, Karl. GLWTS.
4. Dunno about those two, but I've had good experiences with the Pocket Rock-it ones and the EHX Headphone amp.
5. I love the way they sound, I love the way they look. I HATE the way they feel. Never owned one, never likely to.
6.
No, absolutely not. I'd rather not play at all than play music I don't like.
This. I can take about 6 months of dep work playing anything though; any longer and I go a bit cakey.
7. I love these old SWR amps, it's such a shame that Fender are so slow when it comes to spares nd advice. I've just finished refurbing an early Jackson Dinky with a Floyd Rose licensed trem system, and needed to check the specs of the particular unit; all my emails were met with polite but vague responses, despite providing the serial number of the instrument. Not that great in the customer services department. Hope you get sorted soon mate, the old SWR kit is too good!
8. Just watched the Wossy performance and I thought it was good. Until the trumpet solo came in sharp and stayed there.
9. The neck on my current FrankenJazz is from a Squier VM - superbly playable!
10. Neil Diamond took his name from the time he injured his patella on a stray piece of cubic zirconia.
11. Soundgarden had their allotment taken away from them due to complaints about noise. Shame really, as their marrows last year were massive!
12. I don't really see a problem with selling music tech hardware, software could be a bit of a minefield though - transferring licenses etc…
13.
i know they are pretty much seen as a standard headstock but i really think they are ugly as sin (all fender headstocks) at least a lot of the others on this thread are thinking outside the box.
I like the look of a Fender headstock. Looks completely out of place (at least to my mind) on an acoustic though.
14.
I have very low standards
Me too - that makes me AWESOME!!!! (YMMV)
15. I can play both, and it certainly helps with developing a better sense of harmony (and chord voicing too), but given a choice I'd ALWAYS plump for the low ender - it's just, well… better innit?
16. You could probably get away with .45 to .105 if the tension is high enough. DR make a range of DDT strings - designed for players who like drop tunings - http://www.drstrings.com/#!ddt-bass/c1ket What are you currently using?
17.
This can be achieved with cheap gear or expensive gear and is unlikley ever to be a consequence of just 'shopping'.
This. My current squeeze is a frankenbass that's been routed and tweaked over many months and now it plays like a dream (to me). Total cost of the whole thing is less than £200. Who'd have thought it? I have to say that it really helps to calm the BC induced GAS every time I pick it up.
18. Horses for courses. I like them (DHA VT1 EQ user here) and the flexibility that they give. They're also a 'get out of jail free card' if speaking from experience) the valve in your amp's preamp goes during a gig - simply take the lead out of the amp's main input and plug it into the FX return, that sends it straight to the power amp section and rescues your rig. None of this affected the sound guy's settings through the PA, cos I was DI'ed out of my pre too. Happy days...
19. Plus it has the advantage that it's more tax deductable than cheaper gear.
20. I reckon you might need to try something new; new material, or get a teacher (or a different one) to open up new avenues for your playing. Often players (myself included) fall into the trap of thinking that our gear is responsible for the excitement that happens when we pick it up, when often it's that our playing has plateaued and doesn't excite us any more.
21. Played a pub gig in Darwen last night - more covers than we'd normally do, but it was a dry run for some venues later in the year who have specified that we play more covers. The odd bit was when the original singer for the band turned up to see us. He was absolutely blotto and ended up coming round in A&E this morning after staggering into the road and being hit by a car. He's fine, apparently it happens a lot... Probably explains why he's no longer the singer in the band.
22. Wah pedals (and envelope filters, for that matter) sound completely different depending whether they're before or after a dirtbod. The only way to decide is to experiment and trust your ears. That said, it's already been mentioned that if you want the wah sound through the P.A. then you'd need to put that before the M80.
