1. Yay for BCers succeeding! Great gigs guys, have a blast!
2. Weather Report. There, I've said it. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Jazz in all of its various forms and incarnations, but the keyboards just sound crap. Joe Zawinul's writing doesn't really scratch me where I itch either. Jaco's solo stuff, on the other hand ..... WOW.
3. I've got the exact same ones on my main gigging bass at the moment - surprisingly good strings given that they're cheap as chips. Definitely punch way above their weight!
4.
I would suggest a new wiring kit would go a long way to solving all your problems
If only there was somewhere BC'ers could get a handmade, solderless, high quality replacement bell plate with everything already attached that would just drop in to the existing cavity... eh Kiogon? Seriously though, the 500k linear pots should ideally be 250k logarithmic for passive single coil pickups. 500ks will deliver more top end to the output jack, so this might account for the increased hiss that you're experiencing. Whilst you've got it in bits I'd recommend shielding the cavities too (including pickup routes as well) as the single coils don't reject extraneous noise (mains interference, emf etc...) as well as humbucking pickups do. If you're desperate then glue and tinfoil would do it, but I picked up some self adhesive metal foil for doing flashing on roof tiles or something similar. Works a treat.
5. Anybody had any experience of these? I tend to play in Eb tuning, so I'm a little bit worried about how floppy they'd be. My usual gauge is 45 - 105 and 'normal' round wounds are perfect for this, as I like a bit of movement in the string to bend etc… occasionally. Does anybody know what the tension is like on these, and how do they equate to round wounds tension-wise? My usual fodder is D'Addarrio or Rotosound for reference.
6. Me too. One bass (admittedly a home-made / custom Jazz bass) that covers all the basses (pun intended) and one amp that's pretty transparent (modified SWR SM400) into a Hartke hydride 410 and a custom (me again) pedalboard sees me content with all of my kit. Does it count if you've made most of the stuff yourself? I reckon so!
7. OK, what dates would be preferable to everyone? Not sure how far I can take this, but I'd like this to happen. What day / evening would everyone prefer?
8.
You must play Ebony and Ivory and I Just Called To Say. The audience will never forgive you if you don't.
And we'll never forgive you if you do.
9. Also there's For Once In My Life, Signed, Sealed, Delivered, Master Blaster, Higher Ground... You're spoiled for choice really with an artist like Stevie.
10. To be honest, I'd be happy to hear a band get through anything from Songs In The Key Of Life - classics each and every one.
11. I wish. SUCH a good groove! If that doesn't fill the floor then you're in a room full of people who are dead inside. You should probably run away as soon as you can. And Sir Duke if you all fancy a bit of a workout.
12. You're not kidding. Teentown was a bit sloppier than I remember (slower too), as was the unison run in 'Sir Duke', but I had a load of fun.
13. Just spent a couple of hours running through all the stuff I was playing at Uni (12years ago). Had an ACE time. Teentown, Coninuum, the Chicken - Jaco ABC, I Want You Back - jackson 5 I Wish, Sir Duke - stevie Wonder and a few others. Feeling a bit stiff now though, but still grinning to myself like an eejit. Best night in I've had in ages.
14. The EQ on these old SWR preamps is about as flexible as you could wish for. The four knobs allow the user to dial in the centre frequency, and the sliders are plus or minus 15dB, added to that a master 'bass' and 'treble' control either side of those controls and there's not a bass sound that you can't get. Takes a bit of getting used to, but well worth the effort.
15. Sign me up chaps and chappettes.
16. Dream Theatre. John Myung's an amazing player, but just can't listen to them as a band.
17. My first SWR head was one of these, and I only sold it so that I could get the SM400 (same preamp, bigger power stage). I can confirm that the aural enhancer mod effectively doubles the perceived loudness of these little units. über flexible amps.
18. I daresay our elders had similar concerns when that 'Rock and Roll' music (and later 'punk') came along. What concerns me more (although that's still not much) is the increasing dependence on technology and software. What we've got to realise though is that music, like any other language, is in a constant state of development. Some words/sounds fall out of favour and get forgotten, and some get altered and bastardised and continue in a slightly different form. It's a funny old game.
19. Fletcher & Munsen might have provided a scientific footing for why bass sounds better louder, but can they explain why a guitar sounds better the quieter it gets? I think not.

DIY Effects

Yup, I've made (and still use) a good few of those. Super-useful.
22. Would you sell me a single ECC83? can pick it up.
