1. My 'rules' for being in a band are fairly uncomplicated. 1) Don't be a dick 2) Practice 3) Turn up on time You're welcome
2.
i believe it has been found that the computer runs better when drawing files from a drive that is not the same as the system drive.
It's true, it's true. If you're going to use an external drive for audio (recording or samples) then I'd recommend connecting them via firewire over USB2 - there's less chance of the files 'bottlenecking' due to transfer speeds. As far ago as ProTools 8 (we're now on 11) Digidesign were advising against using USB for external drives.
3. I've got metric AND imperial. But to be fair, I've got both kinds of bolt as well.
4.
A new bridge is 99.999% cosmetic
The other 0.001% is pure, unadulterated MOJO.
5.
Close your eyes, turn the knobs, wherever they sound best is where they should be. The numbers don't mean a thing.
…these go to eleven….
6. Dunno really. My band's real niche stuff (NWOBHM), so we only appeal to rock and metal bars. I've been on the phone most of the day trying to get gigs, and have decided to put together an e-press release, single page website with photos and sound samples, since that's what most places seem to want. That's my job for tonight...
7. Any album with Oscar Peterson (piano) and Ray Brown (bass). Sublime.
8.
DHL are utter sh*te. They f**k up nearly everything I have used them for.
This. Useless w***ers.
9.
Welcome to Basschat - I wonder if we should run a sweep for when the bass GAS starts for you again
in 3…….2………1……….. Seriously though, welcome on board matey.
10. I used some candy floss / cotton wool type stuff that was originally packing from something or other at work inside my home-made 1x12" cab. I stapled it to the frame of the cab that houses a 50W no name driver (from a Harley Benton guitar amp, I believe) with a small port in the front. Perfectly adequate for playing at home and turns out it's AWESOME as a guitar cab... I think it cost me £20 in total. Don't get me wrong, it's never going to compete with a Barefaced / TKS unit, but it does what I need it to.
11. Singlemalt kindly let me have his Boss DS-1 for postage costs. Which was nice. He's a pleasure to deal with, and kept me informed of its whereabouts throughout the transaction. Deal with confidence BC'ers.
12. Canadian progress 'Rush' have never been in a hurry to do anything.
13. Don't play when you don't need too - few more things are more irritating than trying to get to know someone when they won't stop noodling Also just be yourself and have fun.
14. Ed Friedland's books have already had a mention, but check out the iRealbook app too - it's a been a real game-changer for me.
15.
It just means that the amp will need to be built better, IMO..and that is against a lot of companies remit and pricepoint. The early SWR's didn't have fans and were designed and very capable of running very hot. My amp tech says that is because the build and componets are so good... military spec he called it.. but then they weren't cheap new. so I'd be on the look out for an old SM400 or even SM220 for lower power output. Bollocking amps still to this day, IMO and can be had for a steal... I can't think of a better bargain out there tbh...and not THAT heavy at around 15-18lbs..
True - I paid £250 for mine from this very boutique. Love it.
16. That 'bridge' (and I use the term loosely) might need a bit of a 'looking at'…
17. My only gear ins and outs this year have been loading the stuff in and out of the car/venues. Apart from the Behringer BDI-21 and Hartke Bass Attack, but they don't really count, do they? What I have learned: Don't whizz on the electric fence.
18. I've got an old (1993) SWR SM400 that hasn't got a fan, nor have a lot of the early Trace Elliott kit. If you don't mind a bit of weight then I'd have a look at something like these.
19. As many tunes as you can learn - even if you never gig them you'll be a better player for it.
20. This year has been a bit slow musically. Playing with a great bunch of guys, but logistics dictate that we probably only meet once a month. I want to (finally) release a solo album, finish the album with Slander that we started this year, and get a Jazz duo/trio together with a local Jazz guitarist. That's not too much to ask now, is it?
21. Not seen it. Anyway, I'm a Hendrick's man!
22. A good song is a good song. Play anything with conviction and folks will listen. Don't be afraid to take risks if you want to stand out.
23. Congratulations on a brilliant purchase!
