Had a lot of fun with my Hartke Bass Attack last night.

I love my Hydrive 410. The external fittings (casters, feet and tolex) are quite flimsy, but tge cab itself will take anything I can throw at it. My SWR sm400 head can deliver a serious amount of bass and the hydrive copes with it admirably.

It's just as Skol33 says: RAM, RAM, RAM. Also, don't record to your boot drive (generally this one has your DAW installed on it too) - laptops are generally 5400rpm, and the access times are sluggish - particularly when you're pulling several tracks of at least CD quality all at the same time. External firewire/SSD is recommended for that sort of stuff.

Good hunting Sir! Nice little amp (and bass) you've got there!

Playing a charity/multiple band setup on Saturday (I know, but this one is an exception); it's the only pedal I'm taking…

Would you be happy for Daltrey to take the stage
paul_5 replied to timmo's topic in General Discussion
I wouldn't imagine I'd be too happy - I don't think he'd know our stuff. -
Slander are playing at the Shed in Leicestershire this coming Saturday (6th) in addition to Walkway, Twisted State of Mind, and headliners Higher On Maiden. Charity do too, so come and get your metal on and support "Ian's Chain" too. Coloursound Bass Fuzz for me. Been through probably dozens since my first Russian Muff, but the BF is my weapon of choice.

would a bad drummer make you quit a band? I just did :-(
paul_5 replied to mrtcat's topic in General Discussion
The problem i have with our drummer isn't his timing. Hes pretty spot on to be fair. My gripe is that he plays fills when we are gigging that he has never played before. And they're usually quite fancy syncopations, that throw me off when i'm not expecting them. Thats when i start giving him the death stare. I wouldnt mind how offbeat his rudiments were, aslong as he did them in practice so i at least have an idea whats coming up!
This. I've played with drummers (and guitarists too, if we're honest) who have spent ALL their time since the last rehearsal on a particular fill or riff. Surprise surprise, it pops up in every song until they get it right. Sigh. -
Any bands use an intro played off a mobile phone?
paul_5 replied to bonzodog's topic in General Discussion
I once did sound for a wedding and (despite having the track on my iPod, as per request) a friend of the bride decided he'd rather play it from his iPhone. Not wanting to get into an argument I just let him get on with it; halfway through the track the phone changed cells and we had the old "deek, deek-a-deek, deek-a-deek" through the PA. I just looked at him and shook my head. Better off on a non-phone device. A dedicated CD player will have an output that's better matched to the aux input socket too. -

I'd walk. Life's too short to play gigs that you don't enjoy or look forward to. -
I really only need an octave, tuner and a dirtbox/pre, but it's nice to have some modulation and fuzz on there too...

Sounds like obtaining money by deception there, taunton-hobbit...

Most unusual 'First New Bass' story? Here's mine...what's yours?
paul_5 replied to Mick The Hat's topic in Bass Guitars
Mine was a Hohner short scale black thingy with a chipboard body and a P pickup. I did quite a few gigs on it, and remember using it to transcribe tracks from Led Zeppelin II and any soul/Motown tracks I could get my hands on (on cassette). I named it 'Frank'. It ended up in a skip. -

Your preferred method of tuning guitars and bass guitars

1. How long have you been playing your instrument? 22 years 2. Do you use an electronic tuner? If yes which model? Yes, Aroma pedal tuner (korg pitch-black copy) 3. Do you tune by ear or electronic tuner? Tuner at gigs, by ear at home. 4. If by ear how do you go about? I tune to a track that I know the key of, tune whichever string is closest to the home key, then use harmonics for the other strings 5. Are you always 100% happy with your tuning? / if not Yup. I've spent a lot of time setting the intonation on my bass, so it's always in tune wherever I am on the fingerboard 6. Why are you not happy with your tuning? 7. What disturbs you about the electronic tuner? It only displays '#', not 'b', so I have to tune to D#, not Eb - nitpicking, I know. 8. Do you know how to tune by ear? Yes. I do it often. 9. What is your preferred tuning method? At home I prefer to tune by ear, as it's one less device to worry about, but live I use my pedal tuner because it mutes the output when it's switched on; nobody wants to hear that, it's like a hoover warming up. The other advantage of a pedal tuner is that the rest of my band are REALLY noisy, and tuning by ear is impossible. -
But AFAICS there's a big difference between going against the grain in terms of looks (which is an image in itself) and turning up to play in whatever you threw on this morning.
I've seen some bands that look like they rolled up in whatever clothes they wore yesterday and subsequently slept in. Pitiable.

I don't spend too much effort/thought/money on my image. There are far more interesting things I'd rather be doing - playing with my sons, nailing 'Bemsha Swing' etc... Some folks may disagree, but hey, that's OK.
