1. Me. I am. It's taken nearly 20 years, but I've taken the actives out of my bass and cloned a Sadowsky outboard for my clean sound, for the dirt it's the Xotic BB Bass pre (erm, cloned again - I'm poor!) My live amp (SWR SM400) has far more tone shaping potential than any sane musician would ever need, but it's the there to correct imperfections at venues/rehearsal spaces.
2.
I wasn't an early adopter of the Smiths, and it is true the typical fan type of red bomber jacket doc Martin wearing bespectacled tragedian did tend to get up ones nose. However, when they all moved on to the Housemartins and Bronski beat the way was clear for better scrutiny and they came out well. Morrissey is indeed an emotion inducing personage, but that's exactly what I thought frontmen in bands ought to be and still do. Sadly, they've all disappeared and been replaced by melodine adjusted clothes horses which as Morrissey once said, "No,it's lock jawed pop stars thicker than pigshit, nothing to convey.. They're so scared to show intelligence, It might smear their lovely career" Def a twat though.
All of this. It's 100% true.
3. Clipping preamp = good Clipping power amp = bad.
4. Like all the best lines, start slowly and work up to speed. No point making yourself ill.
5. I, erm, copied one of the scores but it's A3 size. I'll look into scanning it and posting it on here if you'd like. Frank: In a society where we televise competitive singing we need your kind more than ever.
6. Sorry, did I say opportunity? I meant privilege. I had to pull a few strings but it was worth it.
7. Popular with me. I had the opportunity to look through some Zappa scores from the RNCM a couple of years ago. "Dog Breath Variations" - fascinating and scary stuff. God I miss Frank.
8. Best of British with this Mel, hope you get it sorted.
9.
Is this competition still running? I've managed to avoid it completely for maybe 20 years. Can't say that my life has been the poorer as a result ...
Au contraire, mon ami. It's probably better for not having a little corner reserved for sh*tty pop songs, I know mine is.
10. Dunno really. If you're not bothered about resale you could try tumble-drying it and see if that makes a difference. If you really are convinced that it's the hat for you then you could cut most of the brim off so it looks a bit more 'baseball'...
11. There's life past the first 5? I'll have to try getting up the dusty end sometime…
12. LOVE the Locksmith - ace tune!
13. Not a band I've listened to before, but liking what I'm hearing! Thanks for the link.
14. I had that once, at least she said that was her name...
15. Or this looks like a lot of kit for the money: http://www.thomann.de/gb/eden_wtdi_direct_box_preamp.htm Eden stuff is very highly regarded too.
16. Yup, either of those two are lovely preamps.
17. Yup. Sadly they are no more. . Best look into servicing my SM400 a bit more often.
18. Hooray for everything - a great result!
19. +1 for the Hohner B basses. Had a couple of 5 stringers back in the day and loved them. My B Bass V (neck through with active 2 band) accompanied me up and down the country for roughly 7 years of various tours/gigs, always sounded great through the even the smallest of amps/backline.
20. I know! I mean it's a tortoise. It's not like trying to catch gamefish is it?
21. Electro Music in Doncaster have always had old Trace stuff in whenever I've been (admittedly that's twice. 8 years ago). Might be worth a call though. https://www.electromusic.co.uk/Pre-owned-Bass-Amps-Cabs-and-FX/ They're not showing any used TE gear at the mo, but I don't know how often they update the sight.
22. Not so much. Most of the bands I've left have disbanded afterwards. These days I'd rather play bass at home than see a band playing songs and arrangements that I've heard a couple of hundred times.
23. I'd favour a Gibson/copy Les Paul or SG for jazzy stuff (and pretty much anything else too) as they've got lovely, fat sounds courtesy of the rwin humbuckers, also their scale length is slightly shorter than Fender/copy instruments, which makes getting around that little bit easier.
