Yes, it should be able to do what you want. Clipping the preamp stage is what you want to do - crank the 'gain' knob and adjust the master volume to taste.

A 'free' gig like the one in the OP is probably the one where you play about 40 seconds of each song (rather like the 'preview' function in iTunes) - it's the same thing.

I've not seen them for 10 years, so I might be tempted by a 41st Anniversary tour. Despite it being the closest venue for me to see them at, I'll be avoiding Manchester Arena. Hopefully they'll do somewhere that sounds good.

Been playing around with my BB preamp clone (Big Beefy Booster from pedal parts) recently as the 'drive' settings were a bit 'sh*t or bust' for my tastes. I've settled on altering the value of R6 (in the feedback loop of the 4557 opamp) to 2.5kΩ (it was originally 10kΩ) to lower the minimum amount of gain on the 'drive' knob, and replacing the 1MΩ Linear pot with a 1MΩ Log pot, which gives a whole lot more control at lower settings. Happy days.

I used to run a 2103H two by ten with an 1153 cabinet underneath. Lovely stuff.

In theory you're fine to mix impedances provided that the end result is greater or equal to the minimum required impedance of the amp. In practice bass cabs tend to either be 8Ω or 4Ω cabs, so it limits the scope for mixing somewhat. Guitar cabs can sometimes be as high as 16Ω, but I don't think I've ever seen a bass cab with that much impedance.

black wire of one pickup connects to the white wire of the other, then use the remaining black and white as the signal and ground wires as if you've only got one pickup - which effectively you have. the signal or 'hot' wire goes to the centre lug of the volume pot that you want to use, and the ground wire goes wherever you're grounding to - convention is to 'star ground' all the ground wires to the back of a pot together, so look for a bunch of wires all bundled together soldered to something metal - that's probably it.

Just been looking at the preamp schematic for my SWR SM400 and it would appear that the DI would work even with the head switched off as it's just passive components (in parallel with an opamp) betwixt the input socket and the 'direct' routing for the XLR out. wouldn't be balanced, but it [i]might just[/i] pass signal… You've got me curious now, I'll try it later on in the week…
