I've never bothered - if you're using lead solder it melts at a lower temperature than the lead free stuff. I tend to socket ICs though, just to be on the safe side. Preparation is key though; make sure the component is in place before soldering it, that way the iron's not heating it for any longer than it needs to.

Finally parting with my Dave Hall pedal after many, many happy sessions with it. I'm streamlining my rig and unfortunately this is just too big for what I need .
