DHA VT1 EQ for me, I've dropped the overdrive in mine by replacing the 12AX7 for a 12AU7, but other than that, that's pretty much 'my sound' these days. Nice clean DI and a very flexible EQ section coupled with a warm (but not woolly) smooth valve tone or some grit when you need it. Ticks all of my boxes anyway.

I've just put a pair of these http://www.guitarfetish.com/GFS-JB-Pro-Jazz-Bass-Style-Alnico-Pickups_p_318.html in my fretless. it's a maple neck, alder (i think) body with a cheap Artec SE2a pre on board and I could not be happier with the sound - it's still warm but with lots of presence. It's got the potential for a really cutting lead bass sound too.

Shim that neck - it's like lowering the action on just the dusty end. Seriously though, I'd recommend getting your technique looked at by a bass tutor. It'll probably just need the one lesson and will save you loads in physiotherapy bills later on.

Recently I've joined a classic rock covers band (and very good they are too), and have been trying to nail the tone of Thin Lizzy/Guns N' Roses etc... so I've been dabbling with playing with a pick. I've got two music degrees and 20 years playing experience, loads of studio jobs under my belt too so I'd say my timekeeping is very, very good. Trying to 'lock in' whilst playing with a pick? Feels like being a beginner again. I know that sometimes the pick gets a bit of a rum deal on here (sometimes in jest, other times not), but don't knock it folks; it's just another technique and is equally as valid as slapping, fretless or any other 'specialist' way of playing you'd care to mention.

If you trust the engineer and he has a proven track record / recommendations etc... then trust his judgement. He's probably thinking 4 steps ahead to what the bass will sound like in the mix - and that's what counts. Tracking bass isn't about keeping bass players happy, it's about the finished product - though a happy bass player helps...

Vocals - Björk Drums - Dennis Chambers Guitar - Larry LaLonde (Primus) Bass - I'd have a stab at it. Not sure about keys, I might use Johnny Marr on rhythm though...

generally pin 2 is hot (signal), so that'll go to the tip, but they tend to be printed on the kit these days, or try looking at an online manual - that sort of info is generally in the back pages.

Just sneaked in a last minute vote - been mulling over my 'top 3' for a while and finally made my mind up. The standard of entries has been brilliant (as always), and I've really enjoyed listening. Thanks BCers.

I started out as a guitarist, then moved to keyboards and got into Rush that way. As soon as I heard Ged play I knew that was what I wanted to do. I still dabble with loads of different instruments but I always come back to the bass. I f***ing LOVE it!
