1. Try turning up the AUX knob on the bass and channels 5 and 6, then press the AUX to mon button and turn up the master aux knob (the one above the 3 push buttons), then try turning up the headphone level and see if that helps - it may be that the headphone output is tied in with the internal routing for the aux send...
2.
That's what I was first thinking, however I realised I know nothing about them... so thought I'd ask as everything I found seemed to say you need things costing a million and one pounds which didn't seem right, which is why I posted the thread!
Hmm, some splitters will use transformer balanced and isolated outputs - does tend to drive the cost up a little... Depends how fussy you are. That might be considered 'overkill' for playing down the Dog and Duck.
3. You could probably get one fairly cheap from your local Maplins or similar.
4.
Some of the noise is cool, it proves a real bass is being played and not just some synth or sampled stuff.
This - I've had some recording jobs where we've deliberately gone for a 'clanky' sound. Congratulations, you've nailed this technique, now that you feel it's time to move onto another approach I'd echo what's been said on here already - flats and cut the top of your EQ. The disadvantage to playing semi-acoustic bass guitars is that the pickup is invariably a piezo mounted under the bridge - the place of least bass and most top. That is going to be a major factor in the amount of squeaks and such, so don't beat yourself up about it too much. Altering your RH technique is something that I had to consider when I was playing my SA bass; it took a while, but I got there in the end. Oh, that and I removed the frets - got rid of the fret noise, see?
5. "Nobody want some Blade love?" type bump.
6.
Fender-knockers!
fnar fnar!
7. Joy Division were (for me at least) a band that was significantly greater than the sum of its parts. I would't consider any of the members a particularly great musician (Ian Curtis couldn't even sing), but that didn't stand in their way. Fair play to them for getting up and doing it. They managed to capture everything about who they were and where they were from brilliantly, warts and all.
8. ^ Look at his posture - that's a guitarist posing as a bassist! ^
9. Jeremy - Pearl Jam, not sure how you'd get it to sound right without an 8 string bass though...

Isn't that Steve Albini?
11.
I think one dirtbox is about right, isn't it..?
Nah; Wooly Mammoth, Russian Big Muff and DHA VT1EQ. I've got a couple of others that aren't on the board right now, but you never know. I've only got one rectum though.
12. Seen Les Claypool (3 times), Geddy Lee (twice) and Lemmy, Flea and Billy Sheehan (just the once each). Other major influences on my playing would be people like Duck Dunn, John Paul Jones, James Jamerson, Jaco and Charles Mingus - not likely so see them live unfortunately (though I might get lucky with JPJ).
13.
How about dialling in the BDI21 for the higher level of gain, and just playing a bit gentler when you'd don't need all the grit?
What? and just have one dirtbox? Sort yourself out man!
14. Since someone else beat me to the 'me first' canon of work I'll offer this one up:
15. saw one the other day that was listed as "4 string guitar"... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Epiphone-SG-4-String-Guitar-Black-/170880903333?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item27c94ba8a5#ht_508wt_1215
16. just downloaded it now - will give it a spin later this evening.
17.
You'll be needing some of these to stomp on that ....
I hope they're not 'Tiger feet'. Don't need a coat, as it's quite a warm night. Leaving though.
18. [/dull posts about soldering]
19. Turns out it was just a diode on the +5v power supply rail. Easy fix really.
20. I think sliddx (not his real name) on here either uses one or used to use one for most of his stuff, and he really rated it.
21. I used to absolutely hate the look of the SGs, but having dabbled with guitars for many years (mainly from a studio perspective) I tend to favour them now. They're just a great guitar to work with and have loads of tonal versatility. Quite a stable of my favourite players have gone for them too - Angus Young, Zappa, Pete Townsend etc... Um, I'm having one built next month - quite a U-turn that.
22. Hi Sid, thanks for your offer, but I found a pdf of the service manual online earlier this evening. What a great community BassChat is.
