I've gone back to round wound strings on my fretless just because of the mwah factor. I replaced the bridge a couple of weeks ago, and obviously the strings had to come off. As a sort of bonus, the worn patches indicated where I do most of my playing - don't know why that's important - but there was an obvious amount of wear. Ultimately it sounds better (to me), so that's what I do. Eventually I'll have to have a new fingerboard, but for now I'm enjoying the sound that round wounds give me. I'll look into a hard wearing coating for it though and see if I can coax a few extra years out of the playing surface I've got.

Probably because most people still see music as a hobby, and assume that everybody doing it does it for the love of it. Not always the case.

My dBx 1066 runs after the FX but before the pre, seems to work for me.

5K seems a lot to spend on a single instrument, so I'd have to say one nice bass and invest some money in a really good teacher. Effects, on the other hand....

I had a similar thing from playing DB many moons ago. Mine was diagnosed as tendonitis in my LH thumb - basically the tendon gets inflamed and can't move freely in the little groove in your knuckle and that's the painful bit. I was given anti-inflammatory gel, and I also got my GP to sort me out with some acupuncture (sadly I had to pay for this) which worked a treat. Now I make sure that I ALWAYS warm up before I play.

I'm an advocate of 'less is more' when it comes to miking up a kit. If the drummer's [i]really[/i] fussy and starts to threaten physical violence then I'll use four. Great track by the way, the world needs more octaved fretless basslines.
