In a choice between the Adams and the KRKs I'd go for the Adams, just a personal preference, but I think the Adams have a clearer, less coloured sound. Also bear in mind the size of the room you're mixing in, A7s are lovely speakers, but can be a bit too much in a small box room due to the size of the woofer.

I've strung my fretless Jazz with these new Rotos and they're lovely. They've had a couple of outings, and they're really consistent, balanced strings. The tone is great and they respond well to different techniques (slap, harmonics etc.) Kudos to Rotosound for a well made set of strings (and also for letting us have them for free!). Happy bunny.

I just discovered "Blue Trane" last week. I love Jazz too - that's a superb album.

Just played mine 'in anger' for the first time at rehearsal tonight. Awesome, exactly the sound I've been looking for (anyone who's followed my activities on the 'for sale' section knows that last year was a bit of a quest) for ages. Fretless Jazz bass -- Tech 21 XXL -- Sansamp BDDI -- Ampeg SVP1550 -- Hartke 410 Hydrive cab. Just lovely and dirty, but enough mids to detect pitch. I picked mine up fort £50, and it's brilliant - even though I paid slightly over the odds.

I'll echo the observations about reading on a five, not only do they allow for extended range on gigs (esp. in more modern pop stuff etc...) it also frees me up when I'm playing further up the neck. On a four you've got a bit of a shift to go from C on the E string down to G on the E string, but on a fiver it's all in one position. Simples. Fiver = essential. For me anyway.

My cab's on castors and standing on a small, hollow stage. I went for the alternative option of filling the cavity under the stage with old duvets etc... it worked for my drummer

two things will help here - kindly direct your frontman's attention to the BC 'Bad Jokes' thread (that way they'll NEVER be short of material), and secondly - electric shock therapy for the guitarist. This may include running ample amounts of current through the tuners of his 'axe' - he'll soon stop fiddling with them. Or at least it worked with our old drummer; cured him of his habitual masturbating.

The 421 clips are a complete 'fail' item. They're flimsy and easy to mistakenly unclip, sending your lovely, expensive microphone bouncing off the drum head (or worse, onto the floor). Rubber band or cable ties would do it at a pinch, but I've never had one broken so I wouldn't know

from a theoretical standpoint I'd get all of the chord changes and tones under your fingers. It may not yield the best results but you'll have an unshakeable grasp of the tune. Also this is a transferable skill to every other tune you may want to play.

Punk was/is absolutely necessary. As is Jazz, Hip Hop, Rock etc etc... it's all good.

another +1 for the Bass Improviser's Method by Chuck Sher - a great book with loads and loads of stuff to go back to time and time again. Looks like I'll be investing in the Levine book too, though I think we have it in the library at work. The Samuel Adler is a brilliant book, my first port of call when arranging for larger ensembles - essential reading.
