1. Nice to see this moving so quickly, Dave's stuff is just brilliant.
2. +1, I met him after a clinic once, and he was just the nicest guy - really humble and willing to chat about all kinds of crap.
3.
I am very much a solid state fan. Main reasons... 1. Reliability 2. Portability 3. Price Reliability - When a tube goes it's always when you least want it to. 9/10 in the last 5mins of a soundcheck or second song into the set! Portability - Have you ever picked up an Ampeg SVT-2 head and carried it up a flight of stairs? Try that and then do the same with a Markbass LMIII. Price - The D-class market is very good value for money and the quality of the products out there is getting better and better every year. Companies like Genz Benz and Markbass are developing very nice D-class/Tube hybrid amps that sound great.
Fair comments, but why wouldn't you carry a spare tube? we all go out with spare leads/straps/picks etc.., even if most of the time it's for the amnesiac guitarist to scav off us. Portability is where the trad. valve heads fall down. Mine is close to a two-roadie-job, the SVT2 quoted weighing not far off 5stone (or so I'm told). Even taking this into account the decision should really be made by your ears, so despite the weight, price, maintenance etc... issues, I'd still have at least one valve in my rig - that way you can tweak the overall sound of the amp to your own specs by swapping out tubes for different ones, especially in the first couple of preamp tubes. Ultimately it's all down to taste. Yes, the world would be better if we all drove small, efficient, easy to maintain eco-cars, but occasionally we all need a bit of 'Mustang'...
4. I'll need to get some more soon too - having a bit of a rethink on the board at the mo...
5. 'psychokiller' by Talking Heads.
6. One of those Steinberger 'Cricket Bat' things - the body is a cutaway.
7. sounds like heavy weather to me.
8. free bump for the EHX headphone amp. Really good piece of kit for private practice. It's also got a dinky little clip for attaching it to your strap. Win.
9. a fiver will open up greater chord/arpeggio options, as you can (for example) play low G on the B string (8th fret( and 'B' at 9th fret on the D - if you're into this style of playing then a five string is a no-brainer. Depends on your style of music though, as sometimes an E string dropped to a low 'd' sounds better (in a heavy rock setting) than 3rd fret on the low B.
10. thanks for posting, good stuff.
11.
I always use the passive input it really pushes the tubes in my head without having to crank it up.
ditto.
12.
I've done about 18 hours of rehearsals and three gigs with the gloves. I've worn a small hole in the right hand index finger.
Quick Nige, some nail varnish will stop it laddering!
13. My amp stays at church, and it's headphones at home. Practice time usually happens in the small, wee hours.
14. AFAIK I won't need any new gear for 2012, when has that ever stopped me?
15. Looks like he decided to strip it back to the bare wood and changed his mind. Disgusting.
16. I'm a fairly recent convert to Tool, but am loving discovering all their albums.
17. The Di/EQ is a superb bit of kit. I've just sold mine due to getting a VT2, but it was whisper quiet when going into Protools etc... really flexible EQ section too.
18. Hmm, seller types with bent fingers. That's not even a good copy.
19. I've had a couple of trace heads through a TE 410 and 115 - the 'classic' TE setup. I thought they sounded great, until I played through a Ampeg. Night and day for me. I've had some good sounds through an Ashdown too, but it was held together with blutac and went back to the shop when buttons started falling off.
20. My uncle's got some of these in his loft, perhaps he should get them on the 'bay too.
21. That fretless P looks lovely, good luck with the sale EU. I'd have it off you but have just had to do Christmas for wife and two beautiful little boys.
22. cheers for the correction guys, I've certainly never needed one.
23. Scrunchies are WaY better on a bass than on a hairdo - they're quite the sartorial faux pas.
24. Good for you, pro tools is the BALLS.* * Other DAWs are available.
