my name is paul and i'm a recovering gasaholic. I've managed to keep a preamp for 15 years (asymptomatic of gas i know, but bear with me) and one bass for 4 years. So far this year i've had two different heads and about 10 changes on the pedalboard. It's not even a big board. I've pretty much found all of the sounds i want and when the final pedal arrives this week i shouldn't need to buy any more gear again. on tour? Glad i'm not. I'm currently enjoying being at home; a 9month old wee one and a slightly older one who's 4 on sunday. Plus the time off playing gives me chance to upgrade my pedalboard: bad GASattack this year.

plus one for 51mon's suggestion of reaper. It's not free but is a fraction of the cost of any other daw i've used. It doesn't do everything viat some of the 'big boys' do, but is very good for most things. If you're running on a mac then i'd in for firewire over usb anyday. The MOTU stuff is rock solid in every sense of the word. I'm still using an old (10 years probably) motu 828 mark one which does 8 tracks simultaneously without any hiccups. Give also had great results with the sapphire pro that someone else mentioned. I've seen the same motu as mine go for about £150 on the bay, so should be able to get one for less than the price of a digital multitrack unit if you're that way inclined.

I love most of Jaco's stuff, and tolerate one or two pieces because there's still some stuff that I can learn from them. "Invitation" is a must-hear (IMHO), even if you don't like steel pans, the compositions are amazing and the band is nice and tight. Even if you don't like his music the Bill Milkowski 'Jaco' book is a brilliant read. I can't help feeling a little sorry for Jaco everytime I hear him play, a really troubled genius.

ditto, software always develops in relationship with 'benchmark' machines. My macbook is doing a sterling job at the moment, but it has its limitations - my os is about 2 years out of date and this means viat i can,t upgrade to latest software etc. That said, i'm a musician and composer first, so the hear should be there to serve me and not the other way round. Yes, it's nice to have shiny new toys and plugins but at some point yot have to put 'pen to paper' so to speak. I don't mine running outdated kit to get my stuff together, i know it inside out and i know that if i upgraded then my productivity would suffer.

Bizarre, I've been playing the same bass for 4 years. I've changed pretty much everything else but kept my bass. Sometimes stuff is just [i]right[/i].

On balance, probably tort. Just bought an Arctic Whte P Bass body, so this thread is quite timely. I'm shopping for a tort as we speak...

They don't come up often, but they are worth hanging on for, after all, with the recession and all that it's a buyers' market.

just bought a groove regulator from deej. Said for it late friday and it arrived monday morning. Really speedy service and a quality pedal really well packaged. Won't hesitate to deal with deej again (though i think we've just bought all of his fancy toys).

i've got a blackface svp and the di out has some hum on it. Whether it's due to a replacement transformer (now made in china) i'm not sure. When i switch the di output from pre to post eq then the hum disappears. Mine is a little noisy, but i can confirm that fitting a 12AU7 at v5 definately reduces the overall noise floor. I tend to do this when i'm using it to record through the preamp outputs as opposed to the balanced di, as i fine it gives a more 'tubey' sound - i don't think the di has all of the valves in its circuit. Hope this is of use to someone.
