    SOLD I made this ages ago and used it as a preamp into a power amp for a portable rig, but now have a mini-head so it’s not being used. Loads of clean gain and headroom thanks to an internal voltage doubling circuit and 3 band eq with switchable mids. Great for use as a clean pre or a second amp channel. now £30 posted to UK mainland SOLD

    If you’ve only got one guitarist then I’d be wary of any sort of Muff - the mid scoop is an integral part of their sound, meaning there’s a big hole in the bass tone to help you disappear in the mix. the EQD Cloven Hoof or Coloursound Bass Fuzz will do it.

    Common advice for this is to get a multi player ffects unit and find one that you like. Then go out and buy the real thing, fall in love with it for about 2 weeks and then rinse and repeat. 😄

    I think it’s something to do with the human ear having developed to be more sensitive around the ‘speech’ frequency -round about 1kHz - too much information around this point in the audio spectrum can be tiring on the brain, so scooping it out makes for easy listening. I could be wrong though.

    I don’t really rate them for modulation effects, there are MUCH better phasers and choruses out there for similar money, but for guitar overdrives and distortions they’re exceptional for the money, and virtually indestructible.

    One band I dep for has a ‘Hawaiian shirt’ schtick going on, so there’s that, but otherwise just jeans and t-shirt. I can’t abide things round my wrist when I’m playing.

    Obviously that could change depending on the knob playing it. I was offered a fretless Wal for a staggeringly low price years ago. Not buying it is probably my biggest regret (well, as far a basses go) as they now change hands for significantly more than I'm able to spend on an instrument. Having played it I can see why they are so expensive; if you think it looks good, just wait until you play one.

    500k volume pots will give you a brighter sound, but won’t make your bass any louder. what I’ve seen done to supercharge passive pickups is to place s bar magnet underneath the pickup, so that it increases the magnetic field.

    Assembling/building your own is absolutely the way to go with fretless, unless you're prepared to drop some serious coin on having a luthier do it. The beauty of the Fender bass is that necks and bodies are pretty much interchangeable, and if you don't mind putting a bit of work in you can reward yourself with an amazing instrument that's significantly cheaper than it would be anywhere else. My main squeeze looks a lot like yours - oiled and sealed wood is my favourite finish too.

    Made this in a whim as I got into a debate about whether it was the best bass fuzz in the world. I still reckon it’s a close second to the coloursound bass fuzz, so I’m offering it up for sale. Gated octave fuzz with clean blend and toggle switches for harmonics and filter. I managed to source original specc’ed transistors and transformer, so it’s as close as you’ll get without paying £200 for one. no Velcro on the back, and a delightful (but not too bright) blue indicator LED. sold.

    Very. well, quite. My finger technique is very aggressive, so that doesn’t change, but all of my stuff has been built me to do specific things, so it’s fairly essential.
