  1. Yup, you’ll be fine. Big standard strings will work on an acoustic, as the pickup is a piezo, and picks up physical vibration, instead of using ferrous metal strings to generate power (hence acoustics always have a preamp), so you’ve got more choice with regards to string material (phosphor bronze etc) with an acoustic. I had a short scale acoustic a few years ago and loved the sound of it with flats. I’d stay clear of high tensions strings though, as I was never keen on the idea of wrenching the truss rod up on an acoustic, other BCers with more experience may Pooh Pooh thus though.

  3. I’ve tried a few, and here’s what I’ve found: Ernie Ball and Dunlop - very stiff La Bella and TI - very floppy Ernie Ball Cobalts - just right.

  6. Fuzz is overdrive on steroids - so overdriven that it compresses the top (peaks) off the wave and turns a sine wave into something similar to a square wave. And bass fuzz is awesome.

  12. This ^. Don't drill it - it's easy to crack the lacquer, which will seriously impact the resale value, and will put you off playing the bass. Send it back and get a replacement.

  15. I played Hohners for a while (30 year’s ago) and got rid because they were TOO thin, so that might suit you.

  18. I’m using a Donner DP2 from Amazon - cheap as chips and will power the DHA as well as all my other pedals. Obviously I’m using the voltage inverter, but it’s fine and noise free - the only issue is that the brick won’t power up with the DHA attached; it doesn’t like seeing a huge current drain on startup, so I just wait until all of the lights come on, then plug the DHA in and it’s fine.
  19. They sound better with a 12v supply, but will run on 9v quite happily. Either 9 or 12v, at least 500mA and centre positive (unless it’s one of the newer ones). These pedals need a hefty amount of current, so 500mA is a comfortable amount.
  20. This. It’s another argument for no back line and in-ear setups. I’ve let other bands use my cabs in the past, and have always sought permission beforehand, and I don’t *really* mind someone using my head if they’ve suffered a breakdown during soundcheck or the gig, but someone who ‘forgets’ kit can ferk right off.
  21. I love John Frusciante’s tones - single coil pickups with a smattering of gentle compression and a valve amp just on the edge of overdrive. If it’s just the neck pickup then so much the better. Effects wise I love the whacky stuff that Tom Morello does with his Whammy Pedal, and anything through a rotary cabinet. The Edge made some of my favourite guitar based noises on Achtung Baby too. My philosophy is ‘if you’re going to use effects, use them ALL!!!’ Least favourite would have to be early rock and roll stuff with that god-awful delay.
