    Lovely bass Muzz, congratulations. I had the same idea, - to treat myself to a 'special bass' when I turn 50. However I saw a s/h Dingwall Lee Sklar in Bass Direct, towards the back end of last year, and just [i][b]had[/b][/i] to have it for Christmas! I'm 47 now.......... but I won't finish paying for it until after I turn 50! Oh dear! Still, at least I don't have to wait for it!

    Following on from Grangurs point, - maybe play a simple 12 bar blues progression together? Start off very simply, then add little fills and fancy bits as his confidence grows. Can't think of a better way of a father and son enjoying music and learning together.

    I've heard a lot of good things about the Darkglass B7K. Although it's a lot more than just a distortion pedal really. But not cheap though, expect to pay around £250 new. Not really a big fan of distorted bass personally.

Sheldon might be missing a trick there in his 'affordable' range. Meanwhile, while you're looking for an alternative, have another try at getting used to a 5 string. Believe me, if anyone can, I can! I deliberated over buying my Sklar for ages; decide not to buy it at first because it had 'too many strings'! But in the end I took the plunge. I've been working at it since Christmas, making the transition to 5 strings. It's not been easy, but for the first time the other day, I picked up one of my (many) 4 strings, and it felt like it 'didn't have enough strings' So... don't be too hasty, eh? Just had a thought; - it might not be possible on a Dingwall, because of the scale lengths; but could you restring it E A D G C?
