  1. I was just wondering how people are connecting up their volume pedals. So far I know there are active and passive ones, the down side being that passive ones have a bit of tone suck so would need a buffer (or two??). As far as signal chain, I want to be able to do volume swells without affecting my overdrive/distortions, so it would be after those but before my delay/reverb. thanks
  2. Amazingly I have a function each in November and December, though we'll see if they go ahead! All the venues are closed here (Edinburgh/Scotland) so I don't reckon there'll be any serious indoor gigs until next summer, and I think even that is optimistic!
  3. not quite as cool as the rest but Toxic by Britney Spears Towing the Line by Ben Howard Bodies in Flight by Biffy Clyro (sorry) Unlucky by Bob Reynolds Wash by Bon Iver Enough Space by Foo Fighters Waiting on the World to Change by John Mayer
  4. I've done similar, but rather than just poke the side, I put a short piece of thread on the needle and go all the way through, leaving the thread poking out both sides. This allows the fluid to drain and for it to heal. I also usually put a plaster over it to hold the thread in place but leave it open to the air as much as you can. It's an old hiker's trick.
  5. I just pre-ordered one 😍 can't wait! It seems like all the best bits of the previous 3/4 versions: dry cut switch, the Tim tuning, small footprint... and now independent volumes for dry and wet signals.
  6. Quite a few years ago I heard somewhere that Dave Swift of Jules Holland fame used flat wound E-G but a round wound low B. Apparently the round B has more clarity than a flat, and sounds almost the same in the mix.
  7. I've been getting into my home recording set up over lockdown so I will be watching this thread eagerly! I always record two tracks: one is always my Rupert Neve DI because its much quieter than the DIs on my amps and gives a clean and clear recording without being as dead as plugging directly into the interface. The second track is where I get to sculpt the sound a bit more. I got a Shure SM57 for my birthday in May and borrowed a couple of other mics from friends, including a Rode M3 and an AKG P2. I mix and match these with my two amps (Mesa D800 and Ampeg PF-50T) and my basses (Callowhill MPB 5 and Fender Mustang JMJ) to get the sound for the track. I haven't done the mixing on the projects I've been working on but the guy has said my bass sound great and is easy to work with so I must be doing something right!
  8. I'm probably after the roots Reggae sound as that's closer to what this band does. I've played around with my Moog low pass filter and I can get a good dubby tone with that, adding compressor would probably be enough... and another £300 to pay for the thing 😂
  9. ooooooo I'm excited by the idea of a pedal I've never heard of 😂
  10. what are the dimensions on the Brassmaster? looks and sounds freakin' sweet!
  11. Thanks! I'll maybe look at my technique as well though!
  12. Hi uprights, I've put new nylon strings onto my double bass recently and I'm finding intonation a lot more difficult than when I had steels strings. Now I haven't played very much in the last year for various reasons, so it could very well be my technique has fallen behind a bit, but can intonation be different on different sets of strings? thanks
  13. 😍 I love the look of these basses. GLWTS
  14. interesting... sounds similar to something the Cali76 Compact Bass does. It has a high-pass filter so the compressor doesn't affect the low frequencies.
  15. I'm probably only thinking about this because of lockdown and I'm bored, but I've been contemplating building a pedalboard just for a deep dub/reggae sound. One of my bands plays a mix of ska, latin, Afrobeat and on occasion we drop into a dub/reggae breakdown. So far I've been doing it all with the tone knob and my hands (playing up the fretboard or muting). I have a Moog Low Pass Filter I've taken off my regular board (replaced with the space friendly Proton) and I figure if I get a decent compressor, power supply and switcher pedal (the Moog is not true bypass) I have myself a beefy dub tone. Anyone know anything else/better that might contribute to this?
  16. don't you mean... valve-sniffery?
  17. I did get a little obsessed with valve shopping yesterday so part of me now just wants to buy fancy ones and replace them myself! The stock tubes are Ruby, which are apparently re-branded Shuguang valves from China. A valve savvy friend said to avoid the Chinese ones. Don't know if anyone agrees or knows better?
  18. I'm sending it back, they're going to have a look and replace the valves
  19. Got the new cable, made no difference. I did a bit of research into microphonic tubes and that seems to line up with the sound I'm getting. I decided to take the cage off to check. I tapped all the valves and ALL of them apart from one are microphonic!
  20. can anything be done about it if it is that? I've looked and I think there's springs in the housings of the preamp valves.
